Re: ammonia spikes, I have started using SeaChem AmGuard anytime I do significant tank maintenance - “significant” defined as moving substrate around, big plant trims, etc. According to SeaChem it’s the most powerful product in the market, and locks up harmful ammonia for 48-72 hours (double that of similar products), but it remains bioavailable to the nitrifying bacteria such that it can still be broken down as it normally would. Having started to use this I’ve never experienced any adverse effects from ammonia spikes on livestock, even when making major changes to scapes (which includes dosing the tank prior to pulling everything out and lowering the water in order to net them out). Even with consistent/ideal water parameters in the day to day, I think it’s a reasonable insurance policy to keep on hand to manage the unexpected.
