In order for the winged cars to participate in NASCAR, MOPAR was required to build so many of them for public consumption. The Dodge Daytona broke the 200mph mark at Taledega.
One correction- Chrysler actually had to run a 305 cubic inch engine in 1971. To Bill France’s horror, Dick Brooks led the Daytona 500 at one point with a little Keith Black-built LA engine.
Correct me if I am wrong but didn't Dodge/Plymouth have trouble selling these cars when they were new? If only I had a quarter of a million to buy one of these today. As nice as this car is I am surprised at the bench seat and column shift transmission.
You are correct. They sat ,some fir over a year. It was routinely considered a bad. Ugly design. I drove a 69 l78 chevelle rally green copo. Mopars back in the day. What can I say .
Whats crazy is these cars sat at pops Plymouth/Dodge dealership. I remember, but pop had a hunch pepple would seek them out inbthe future. Pops past away in 85, but we still 2 suoer birds and 2 daytonas never registered.. moved from closed down dealer no our family residence.
Richard Rollins from Gas Monkey just paid around 200 something thousand for a non matching numbers. Somewhat okay restomod Superbird. Not even close to this nice.

That wing is adjustable to create as much as 1000 pounds of down force to the rear, so I heard. Nice car 🚙
WOW, if I only had the cash... such an amazing slice of racing history! GL was your sale, Jay!
This car should be belonged in a museum.
WOW the top banana, Jay again pulls one out of his black hat wouldn’t be a blast to ride around driving this piece of NASCAR history.
The top banana would have a Hemi in it.
@@trieper2023 You’re surely kidding right? It’s one of the most expensive cars of it’s era now but one of the best cars ever made? Not even close.
