Intelligence is not a prerequisite to converting to Catholicism. In fact, it's not a prerequisite to converting to anything as much as we might be tempted to believe that only smart people are Christian. Christianity in particular is even more complicated because a Christian can be both smart and humble (i.e Gavin Ortlund) is not a prerequisite to converting to Catholicism.
Hey Trent! I'll pray for your debates. You should have Dr. Eduardo Echeverria on your show sometime. He's done a lot of great work on ecumenical dialogue between Catholic and Reformed theology. Three books I think you'd love: "Divine Election", "Are We Together?", and "Revelation, History, and Truth."
Praying for you, Trent! You are a wonderful and faithful representative of catholic teaching. I here’s a great question for your debate on sola Scriptura. James, which protestant council was it that decided the doctrine of sola Scriptura and what are the exact words they used to define this doctrine, so that all protestants would believe in This critical doctrine?
1. As a Reformed Baptist, Dr. White would probably refer to the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith whose Chapter One, Paragraph One, begins with: "The Holy Scripture is the only sufficient, certain, and infallible rule of all saving knowledge, faith, and obedience." 2. The Church of England (Anglican Protestant) Convocation in 1562 approved the 39 Articles of Religion whose Article 6 - 'Of the Sufficiency of the holy Scriptures for salvation' begins with "Holy Scripture containeth all things necessary to salvation: so that whatsoever is not read therein, nor may be proved thereby, is not to be required of any man, that it should be believed as an article of the Faith, or be thought requisite or necessary to salvation." 3. The authoritative 1580 Lutheran Book of Concord reads: “The Holy Scriptures alone remain the only judge, rule, and standard, according to which, as the only test-stone, all dogmas should and must be discerned and judged, as to whether they be good or evil, right or wrong.” 4. The 1647 Westminster Confession of Faith that became authoritative in The Church of Scotland (Presbyterian) Chapter One, Article Four, reads: "The authority of the Holy Scripture, for which it ought to be believed, and obeyed, dependeth not upon the testimony of any man, or Church; but wholly upon God (who is truth itself) the author thereof: and therefore it is to be received, because it is the Word of God."
@@annakimborahpa Appreciate this! I like to know and understand as much as I can from both sides... So are you Catholic? I wonder what James would say to this question: Where do these Churches get the Authority to declare such a doctrine of the Church for all Christians? And what do they do if their definitions differ?
1. You're welcome. 2. Yes, my local bishop is in communion with the Bishop of Rome and I have an assigned envelope number at my local parish. 3. I don't know where "these Churches get the Authority to declare such a doctrine of the Church for all Christians" since I don't believe they have this authority and they differ among themselves regarding the nature of church authority. I believe James White subscribes to the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith. The Catholic understanding is that the authority of the Church is vested in the Bishop of Rome (who is the successor to St. Peter) and the bishops in union with him throughout the world. 4. "If their definitions differ," they simply disagree with one another. They do not possess the unity of faith residing in the successor to St. Peter. 5. If you are not familiar with it, the following is from the Second Vatican Council's Dogmatic Constitution On The Church that was solemnly promulgated by Pope Paul VI on Nov. 21, 1964 where the status of non-Catholic Christians is presented in No. 15 from Chapter Two, On The People Of God: LG No. 15: The Church recognizes that in many ways she is linked with those who, being baptized, are honored with the name of Christian, though they do not profess the faith in its entirety or do not preserve unity of communion with the successor of Peter. (Cf. Gal. 4:6; Rom. 8:15-16 and 26) For there are many who honor Sacred Scripture, taking it as a norm of belief and a pattern of life, and who show a sincere zeal. They lovingly believe in God the Father Almighty and in Christ, the Son of God and Saviour. (Cf. Jn. 16:13) They are consecrated by baptism, in which they are united with Christ. They also recognize and accept other sacraments within their own Churches or ecclesiastical communities. Many of them rejoice in the episcopate, celebrate the Holy Eucharist and cultivate devotion toward the Virgin Mother of God. (Cf. Eph. 1:11-12; 1 Cor. 12:4 Gal. 5:22) They also share with us in prayer and other spiritual benefits. Likewise we can say that in some real way they are joined with us in the Holy Spirit, for to them too He gives His gifts and graces whereby He is operative among them with His sanctifying power. Some indeed He has strengthened to the extent of the shedding of their blood. In all of Christ's disciples the Spirit arouses the desire to be peacefully united, in the manner determined by Christ, as one flock under one shepherd, and He prompts them to pursue this end. (Rev. 22:17) Mother Church never ceases to pray, hope and work that this may come about. She exhorts her children to purification and renewal so that the sign of Christ may shine more brightly over the face of the earth. No. 16 of Lumen Gentium presents the Church's teaching on the status of non-Christians, another worthy read in my opinion. Glad to hear that your doing good, Trent. I was a bit worried because i dont know if it's just me but you seemed kind of tired in the most recent videos, so im glad everything seems to be going fine and that you were just busy.
Allie-Beth Stuckey was so vocal about her anti-Catholic rhetoric, but when Trent asked to debate her, she then instead wanted to "moderate." My concern with her is, she is very unlearned in her own faith, let alone Catholicism, does she have any business having a voice concerning apologetics and theology? I think not, and she has a lot of followers that she is leading down a dangerous territory; basically making up her own Franken-theology.
I don't see anything wrong with her recognizing that she wouldn't be the best to debate Trent Horn. I think she's incredibly smart but to go up against a professional apologist who has studied the arguments against Catholicism for years would be outside of her area of expertise. I also think this prompted a whole conversation and idea with The Blaze because they're creating a new series called Debatable with Allie to have these debates and conversations. It pains me when I see her anti-Catholic remarks but I get it at the same time. So many converts speak of the same thoughts and understanding they had before seeking and finding the truth. I was happy to hear that she is open to talking with Trent one on one too. Come Holy Spirit!
@Krista_Lynne Maybe she should have recognized that before she went on a tirade and spewed anti-Catholic rhetoric that had no basis in reality because they were just.....the same lies that they peddle around as truth. She opened her mouth, then did the research on who Trent was, then backed out. I really don't have a problem with people creating their own opinions because that's human nature. What I have a problem with is a person with a giant platform that was created by politics, using that as a conduit for her anti-Catholic views that are erroneous. It's different when people have an issue with Catholic theology that is objectively true, but when they repeat the same stupid talking points like "worship Mary" or "there is no biblical basis for a Pope", she is just spreading lies that people buy without doing their own research because they trust her. She backed out because she has the theological depth of a new Christian and someone finally called her out on it.
Watched your debate with James White last night on Sola Scriptura and I felt it was a good debate. You are a skilled and gifted debater and I appreciated your insights. I am a member of a Southern Baptist church, but certainly not a representative for them. You intrigued me last night... But, I can't get over 3 things about Roman Catholicism. I'd love to understand them better. 1. The mass (If Christ's sacrifice was sufficient, why does it need to be re-presented so often?) 2. The status of Mary and the saints and the church's treatment of them. I understand that Catholics distinguish between worship and veneration, but as an outsider looking in, it looks like worship. 3. The Marian doctrines (perpetual virginity, immaculate conception and bodily assumption). Trent did make me recognize last night that although I believe the Scriptures to be God breathed and the sole infallible rule of faith for my life, they came to me by tradition. I am curious and open to conversation. Look forward to tonight's debate and hope both men perform well and present strong arguments. Keep up the good work Mr. Horn and thank you.
1. First and most important, it's Chrit own command ("do this in memory of me"). Because Christ's sacrifice is sufficient and unique, then the Mass we celebrate it's an actualization of that one sacrifice. That's why we say that when we celebrate Mass, we leave the time we're living now (chronos) and enters into the time of God (kairos). Because we entered God's time, we can be participants of Christ's unique sacrifice and be united with him to offers ourselves as sacrifices as well. To participate in Christ sacrifce is a sign of perpetual communion with God (the same way the passover was the sign of perpetual communion in the Old Covenant). 2. The distinction within veneration and worship is primarily due to the fact that one envolves sacrifice and the other don't. We don't offer sacrifices for Mary or the saints, but only to God. In this sense, we believe that only by offering the Sacrifice of the Mass you can truly and fully worship God and you can only do that if you believe Christ himself is present in the Mass (not only present in some symbolical way but actually present, wich is the doctrine of In Persona Christi and transubstantiation). Don't want to be disrespectful by any means, but for catholics, it's easier to think there's no difference within venerate the Saints and worshiping God when you don't fully worships Him. 3. I think it's easier to accept these dogmas when you look from the point of view that they have the purpose of pointing towards the glory of Christ. The dogma of Theotokos (Mother of God) was defined to condemn nestorianism, wich is a christological heresy. The Immaculate Conception is fitting because it would be sacrilegious for the Son of God to be carried in a womb with the stain of sin. The Perpetual Virginity so there's no doubt about Christ miraculous birth and denying it diminishs Jesus as the Only-begotten son, because he is the perfect offspring (Ezekiel 44:2). Finally, the bodily assumption shows Christ's glory by honouring his mother in the most perfect way, not only by perfectly following the 4th commandment, but to establish his universal kingdom. Mary is the Queen because Christ is the King (1 Kings 2:19-20) and as Christ perfectly rules the Earth and Heavens with his glorified ressurrected body, the Queen Mother also exercises her ministry with a glorified body in heaven. Hope my answers will help you understand better our beliefs. God bless you!
This doesn’t really have much to do with your comment but I don’t like James Whites’ Penal Substitutionary Atonement Theory. This is the view that God must punish sin. Therefore, God must punish someone for sin. And therefore, Jesus took on the sins of the world, and God punished Jesus in our place. This sounds good on the surface but runs into serious problems. For one, God punishes an innocent man for the sins of others. And for two, this carries serious Trinitarian or Christological errors. If God saw God as sinful, and turned away from God, or disliked God, then that would mean the breakup of the Trinity and of the universe. This would also mean the Son is inferior to the Father, when each GodHead is Fully God.
(2) Sorry accidentally cancelled the comment. So it would basically mean that God punished God, which sounds like bad Trinitarian theology. Or you could say that God punished the Human Side and not the God Side. But that creates another problem. You punish a person, not a nature. So saying God punished the human side of Jesus would be like saying Jesus is actually two persons. That’s a heresy. Christ is One Person, with Two Natures, that’s the Hypostatic Union. You could also say that Christ stopped being God at one point, which is another heresy. Either way, all of this stuff is bad. And James’s stance really makes no sense. I prefer the Theory of Atonement that says we incurred a debt to God through sin. And we could not pay it back. Therefore, Jesus Christ Offered God something greater than the sins of the world, His Passion. Making up for the debt, even more than the debt. I would say that is how the Crucifixion worked.
@@ghostapostle7225 "it looks like worship." Adding a bit to Ghost. If Catholic's worshiped Mary I would not be Catholic. Always #1 to keep in mind, we follow her words: do whatever he tells you. Mary - our Spiritual mother, always lead us to her Son "Scriptures to be God breathed ... they came to me by tradition." 100% agree. Scripture itself is tradition put to writ, and to even know what is scripture, is to defer to tradition. Not ANY tradition, but that of the Catholic Church long ago - at least your New Testament canon exactly, 27 writings no more, no less, out of 300+ early Christian writings. The same 4th c Catholic Church that declared, decided the NT, said the Old Testament was 46 writings. Over 1000 years later, a Catholic priest in central Europe would say the Church errored and he was right. "the sole infallible rule of faith" Scripture teaches this no where (yes it is profitable for teaching, correction, reproof). Properly speaking, the bible is both inspired and inerrant. Infallibility is a charism of the Church to declare what is true without error. All that said, the Catholic Church teaches that scripture is materially sufficient, just not formally sufficient for what you need to know for salvation. You can search for those terms on line. Use a Catholic source. :) Always recommend amongst many great books. - reading the Catechism (on line for free as an option) - Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist (Dr Brandt Pitre; Catholics are either RIGHT on the Eucharist or have been pagans for 2000 years) - Walking With God (Dr Tim Gray) - any and all of Dr Scott Hahn.
Although I’m a pipe-hitting reformed Christian who shares James White’s perspective, I must say you are by far my favorite debate opponent of his. I may strongly disagree with you, but I greatly appreciate and admire your wit, focus, humor, argumentation, and skills as a orator. Would love to see you in person at a future debate.
I'm on the Reformed side of all your debates, but I enjoy your content as well. Will definitely be praying for safe travels and for the Spirit's blessing and for fruitfulness as you do your work.
Trent, you or Joe Heschemeyer or someone needs to do an in depth discussion on separation of church and state and Masonic ideas etc. This is a big argument that Baptists believe in.
As a Protestant, I love your content and engagement with others Trent. You are by far my favorite defender of the Catholic tradition and I often recommend my Catholic friends your channel as I cite you for much of my knowledge on Catholic teachings. I hope that your discussions will continue to be fruitful and friendly with White, and although I do hope that it brings more people to the protestant position, I am happy to see the body of Christ bolstered by irenic discussions and fruitful ministries such as yours!
With all due respect, you are full of hypocrisy. As a protestant, why would you have a "favorite defender of the Catholic faith?" Secondly, why would you recommend your Catholic friends to Trent's channel? Is it all glory to God or Trent? Your favorite defender of the faith should be a Christian apologist, not a Catholic apologist. And you should be pointing your Catholic friends to God and the truth of His Word, not to Trents RUclips channel.
For the first point, many people defend the Catholic faith. Although I reject Catholicism (clearly because I'm not Catholic), I can still have a favorite person out of those who defend Catholicism. Trent is my favorite due to his ability to properly articulate Catholic positions on issues while not nearly being as rude or demeaning as many other Catholic apologists on RUclips. He also does great work in the pro-life sphere which all Christians, Catholic or not, should give glory to God for. Secondly, I recommend Trent's channel to my Catholic friends who want to learn more about Catholicism when they are confused about their own faith/teachings. Of course, I give them what I believe to be the biblical view on every issue and exhort them to compare Catholic teachings to the teachings of Scripture. But I want them to have a fair assessment of what Catholics have to say on any given issue, not just my or other Protestant's idea of what Catholics believe. My favorite defender of the faith is not a Catholic apologist (I merely said favorite defender of the Catholic faith, not the faith as a whole), it's a toss-up of the likes of St. Augustine, John Owen, and R.C. Sproul. And for a contemporary option, Gavin Ortlund. I understand your concerns with my comment, but I am merely giving God the due credit for the manner of accuracy in the exposition of the Catholic position and for his willingness to engage thoughtfully with traditions outside his own and allow Christians to make more informed decisions about their faith (even when they end up disagreeing with his viewpoint which I often do).@@brutus896
@roberthughes9295 I have Catholic friends ad well. To the ones who are confused, I point them to the Bible. They are confused for a reason. I would never direct them to a more mature Catholic to explain to them a blasphemous faith. Do you suppose that Jesus would direct a confused Pharisee wanting to know God to a High Priest?
There is never harm in learning more about other traditions and using discernment. This is exactly what I am encouraging my friends to do. I don't want them rejecting a false notion of the Catholic faith, then to find out they misunderstood the teaching, then to return right back to Catholicism. This is exactly what Luther told his contemporaries to do. He beckoned them to examine the counsils and teachings of the magisterium to accurately discern what they teach, then to compare that to the scripture, and then use discernment to come to a conclusion on what path is best to follow Christ.@@brutus896
@brutus896 so how do you point Catholucs to the bible? Jn 6 Bread of Life Discourse - Jesus said, 'I am the Living Bread, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink His blood you will not have life in you' Catholics believe Jesus implicitly. The words are what they are. Jesus was calling Himself Living Bread and we must eat His flesh and drink His blood. Clear enough. At the Last Supper He blessed bread and said 'eat this IS MY BODY' - see ordinary bread became His Living body thus LIVING BREAD. He blessed wine and said, 'drink this is MY BLOOD of the Covenant' that wine became blood -'my blood' said Jesus. This us where transubstantiation takes place. The bread remained bread but the substance changed into His body as per His words. We Catholics believe all this without any twisting His words are clear enough. So how do you explain these words of Jesus without putting your twist on them? Like St Peter we say that since His words are true We have come to believe that He truly IS the Holy One of God. You on the other hand act like those of John 6:66 find this teachong hard but you protestants do not leave. You protest His words and stay around circulating your heretical eisegesies
@@brutus896OK I'll bite. And who says Trent isn't already a Christian? To which you will reply that he can't be, because you think he believes in an unbiblical doctrine. Can we skip to which doctrine you think is unbiblical?

The debates are on the _Fist Lutheran Houston_ RUclips channel. They turned the comment section off today. Which, by the way, was overwhelmingly in favor of Trent.
Question for you - does Matthew 19 on divorce have any impact on Sola Scriptura? Since Jesus says parts of the pentatuch are not to be followed, doesnt that create a huge problem for assuming the inerrancy of scripture/God Breathed claim?
Trent is 100% right. James White's interpretation of scripture has no pedigree. He us unable to quote anyone in the first 1000+ years who taught his interpretation, including his denying of purgatory. Interesting this, the Christians found the same to be with the Arians some 1700 years ago. They were unable to cite from tradition, who taught the Arian teaching. And the Christians too, cited scripture denying their claims that Christ was created. James is in a way, a 21st Arian, creating man-made doctrines by decapitating scripture from the faith from which it came.
@123jinson Ik right? Like this is an epic clash of titans and ideas... let's put it behind a paywall where 85% of ppl will not even know it happened. What a joke. Trent I hope it was a tough decision agreeing to that debate, bc I feel it's borderline not worth debating if no one sees it
Just watched the discussion on Allie's "Debatable" and it was a bit frustrating that it turned into putting Catholicism on trial. When Trent turned the table, briefly, White dodged hard. When Trent hinted at the splintering among Protestants, White would broadly dismiss as "Liberal" those with whom he disagreed even though he dodged what he has in common with them. It would have been more fair if Trent had been granted the opportunity to pursue White to defend sola scriptura instead of repeatedly letting him off the hook. That said, Trent did extremely well in showing that Catholicism is well-defended and, during some portions of the session, showing that the teaching authority of the Church is well-promoted.
She at least to her credit is not the name calling addict that “Dr” Bishop James White is (I know she’s fundamentally wrong about things but I don’t at least see ill will besides bias which we all can deal with)

Congratulations, Trent. We pray the Lord will susutain you in your evangilisation and humility. From, Australia.
Trent, you are one of the greatest blessings in the Catholic church today. Thank you for all your hard work. Prayers for you and so happy you have that opportunity to go on Allie's show. 🙏
Us Houstonians are happy to have you in H-town!!! God bless you and your family!
I happy to hear she wants a more basic conversation about Catholicism. I think that is where most of the conversions will happen, not debates that go into the minute details that most people cant track.
I truly love the work you do. I’ve learned so much from you about our faith and how to defend it. I am a convert as well. I’m the lone Catholic in my entire family. Thank you for the work you do!
You're the lone Catholic in your family for now. You're a light, a light through which christ will bring them all to the truth. God bless you.
Love them as I am sure you do. Invite them to learn more about your the faith as you can, including going to Mass with you.
Please watch the warning or illumination of conscience by Christine Watkins. The Papacy can not be destroyed. Don’t call protestant’s Christian! Following padre Pio who shows the true beauty of Catholicism which is everyone’s true home! God bless.

Need to heed what the Catholic Church teaches, Catechism para 818:
_"However, one cannot charge with the sin of the separation those who at present are born into these communities [that resulted from such separation] and in them are brought up in the faith of Christ, and the Catholic Church accepts them with respect and affection as brothers . . . . _*_All who have been justified by faith in Baptism are incorporated into Christ; they therefore have a right to be called Christians, and with good reason are accepted as brothers in the Lord by the children of the Catholic Church."_*
Thank you Trent. Looking forward to the debates. God bless🙏
I look forward to another post debate debrief from James where he says hes hearing everyone is saying he lost. Then, proceeds to tell everyone they feel that way cause they werent paying attention 😂😂😂

They pour out drink offerings to other gods to arouse my anger.

Thank you Trent for you and your family, I could only imagine the time it takes from all of you.
Looking forward to listening when you're on her show in April! Praise God for your openness and desire to bring others into His Church.

Hey Trent! I'll pray for your debates. You should have Dr. Eduardo Echeverria on your show sometime. He's done a lot of great work on ecumenical dialogue between Catholic and Reformed theology. Praying for you, Trent! You are a wonderful and faithful representative of catholic teaching.
I here’s a great question for your debate on sola Scriptura.
James, which protestant council was it that decided the doctrine of sola Scriptura and what are the exact words they used to define this doctrine, so that all protestants would believe in
This critical doctrine?
1. As a Reformed Baptist, Dr. White would probably refer to the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith whose Chapter One, Paragraph One, begins with: "The Holy Scripture is the only sufficient, certain, and infallible rule of all saving knowledge, faith, and obedience."
2. The Church of England (Anglican Protestant) Convocation in 1562 approved the 39 Articles of Religion whose Article 6 - 'Of the Sufficiency of the holy Scriptures for salvation' begins with "Holy Scripture containeth all things necessary to salvation: so that whatsoever is not read therein, nor may be proved thereby, is not to be required of any man, that it should be believed as an article of the Faith, or be thought requisite or necessary to salvation."
3. The authoritative 1580 Lutheran Book of Concord reads: “The Holy Scriptures alone remain the only judge, rule, and standard, according to which, as the only test-stone, all dogmas should and must be discerned and judged, as to whether they be good or evil, right or wrong.”
I wonder what James would say to this question:
Where do these Churches get the Authority to declare such a doctrine of the Church for all Christians?
15 from Chapter Two, On The People Of God:
LG No.
The entire document can be read online at the Vatican VA website /archive/hist_councils/ii_vatican_council/documents/vat-ii_const_19641121_lumen-gentium_en.html

Yep
LOL 😂 : You're just as clueless about Protestantism!
💯
Amazing news, praying for you Trent!
Looking forward to those debates!

1. The mass (If Christ's sacrifice was sufficient, why does it need to be re-presented so often?)
@@ghostapostle7225 "it looks like worship."
Adding a bit to Ghost. If Catholic's worshiped Mary I would not be Catholic. Always #1 to keep in mind, we follow her words: do whatever he tells you. Mary - our Spiritual mother, always lead us to her Son
"Scriptures to be God breathed ... they came to me by tradition."
100% agree.
"the sole infallible rule of faith"
Scripture teaches this no where (yes it is profitable for teaching, correction, reproof).
Always recommend amongst many great books.

5:38 Oh my gosh, Trent and RZ IN THE SAME VIDEO!!! This is going to break the internet!
As a protestant, why would you have a "favorite defender of the Catholic faith?"
Secondly, why would you recommend your Catholic friends to Trent's channel?
I hope they give you a say in any free "clips" put out.

If they have free trials you could use services like Privacy that allow you create virtual credit cards with spending limits. You can sign up but the charge will never be successful. Not sure on the morality of that, but I think your point is worthy of consideration
@@ricardoamaya2500if they have a free trial then if you never pay its not immoral.
As in, if that credit card trick is just to make sure you won't forget to cancel before the free trial is over then it ought to be fine?

Trent is 100% right. James White's interpretation of scripture has no pedigree. He us unable to quote anyone in the first 1000+ years who taught his interpretation, including his denying of purgatory. Interesting this, the Christians found the same to be with the Arians some 1700 years ago. They were unable to cite from tradition, who taught the Arian teaching. And the Christians too, cited scripture denying their claims that Christ was created. James is in a way, a 21st Arian, creating man-made doctrines by decapitating scripture from the faith from which it came.

You got this trent
She's sooooper biased against Catholicism.
She at least to her credit is not the name calling addict that “Dr” Bishop James White is (I know she’s fundamentally wrong about things but I don’t at least see ill will besides bias which we all can deal with)
Would you consider debating InspiringPhilosophy?
Best of luck!
Hello good sir. Thank you for what you are doing. I just want to ask, why debate with protestants who will remain protestants even after you kick... i mean prove your point?
Trent I’ve been waiting for you and Allie to discuss about Catholicism ever since Farmer and Allie had their debate. It’s a REAL bummer that she is going to do a paywall. Does anyone know where I need to subscribe to pay and watch the new debate between Trent and James White?

Can't find the debate with Allie Beth Stuckey. Where is it?

Excited for interview with redeemed zoomer, he seems like an interesting person. Some other suggestions: Matt Whitman of ten minute Bible hour, and Stephan of patristix.
Paywall is crazy
How do I watch the Allie Stuckey show with White and Horn?
