    The Springfield Armory 1911 DS Prodigy deserved a full 1000 round honest review. So here it is on Nightwood Guns! How does this 2011 and Double Stack 1911 style pistol stack up against the Staccato Bul Armory or even the Tisas or SDS Imports MAC. For a 9mm 2011 pistol, it's is actually a good gun! But is this handgun perfect? Does it have any problems malfunctions or jamming issues? Stay tuned to Nightwood Guns to see if a problem or jam occurs with the Prodigy! Is it the best 2011 out there? We'll see!

    I got the 4.25” and put 1,000 rounds through it in its stock configuration and it ran perfectly, then I sent it off to get all EGW internals and an Atlas Flat trigger tuned to 2.4 lbs., lighter recoil spring, etc. and have put another couple thousand rounds through it. It’s been perfectly reliable, shoots better than any of my other pistols and now it has no MIM parts and still cost less than a Staccato. I’m very happy with it!

    I'll get one next, but I decided to do something a little different... Picked up the Girsan Witness, spent $70 on a Red Dirt Trigger tuned to 3 Lbs. Got a nice looking Cerakote Job (Midnight Bronze, Burnt Bronze, with Classic Distressed). Had slide to frame fitting polished after Cerakote runs nice. I love my new Girsan Witness 2311 | 4.25" [1,500 rounds to date]

    Great review... I know there is a lot of hate surrounding this gun. Despite the mixed reviews I still purchased one for myself (5in) and I will admit it was a problem child out of the box. But with a little help from my local gunsmith and replacing the internals with EGW parts. This gun has now become one of my favorite guns I own and shoot. I've had friends who own Staccatos shoot it and they even said they were impressed. I like the gun so much that I just purchased the 4.25 to do my next build with.

    Thanks for the balanced review. I wanted to buy American and decided on the Prodigy + upgrades; namely custom fitted forged fire control parts and a wider slide stop. They added $500 to my cost, which comes in a few hundred dollars below a Staccato. After 2,500 rounds, I've had zero malfunctions. It's a pleasure to shoot and accuracy is excellent. There was just one annoyance. After 1,300 rounds the optics plate developed about 0.01" of play, but accuracy has not been affected.

    I've got the first run 5" and have none of those problems. But i did have issues with the slide slowing down on the disconnector. So I changed the recoil spring to a heavier 12# spring and went 100% for about 1200ish rounds. Now I have the original 9# recoil spring back in it, and now it's 100% and running a little flatter and just as fast. Maybe a little faster with the better return.

    So part of what pushed me to go for this gun was the fact it has a pretty robust ecosystem, there is a lot of information surrounding the early issues in case I were to run into them (unlike the Tisas offerings which aren't even in the wild yet). I've shot Staccato, Atlas, Nighthawk MPA, CZ (TS2, and some cajunized CZ's), and a few other really nice guns...but the Springfield unfortunately was one of my favorites. I don't like Springfield, I would prefer to avoid their products, but the gun felt good in hand, it was easy to shoot whether ironsighted or with a dot (yes I shot two different 4.25's) and the owners had nothing but good things to say, even for the early example.
    I did the math, and even if I buy the ignition kit, more mags, another optic plate, and an optic, I come in below the price of a Stealth Arms Platy that is properly optioned for my preferences, or a vaporware Bul Armory. Bul guns sell out in short order when they do come in stock.

      I agree !!!! I love mine. For $70 I replaced the sear and disco from EGW and at about 450 rounds the trigger started coming in at just above 4.5 lbs. At over 1000 rounds now with the only failure I've had was benching it to sight in my dot and the slide didn't lock back. Well, I was putting weight on the mag and caused it to not lock. Otherwise, flawless. Sometimes folks buy high end just because they want to sit at the "cool kids table". I buy what works , have no "sack queens" and only own what I shoot. The Prodigy is amazing to me and it has caused me to fall in love with 1911's. 🙂 🙂 🙂

    I handled the Prodigy 4.25” alongside a Staccato P and the Prodigy felt better in hand, to me, than the Staccato. Part of it was due the stubby grip safety used on the Staccato, but the grip of the Prodigy felt well executed to me. The build quality of the Staccato is higher, obviously, but for a significantly less expensive gun the Prodigy’s ergonomics were punching above it’s weight. I also liked the sights on the Prodigy. The gun I handled wasn’t poorly fit and it’s worth noting that if the barrel locks up tight and consistent, the slide to frame fit isn’t nearly as important as it’s made out to be in reviews. Early reviews of reliability have given me pause on the Prodigy, but it seems Springfield is starting to iron them out because I know folks that have had zero issues with their guns.
    People often make more of MIM parts than need be. If the MIM part is done well, it will provide a long service life and a poorly executed part will break fairly early. Forged parts can also have problems if the forging or machining was done poorly. Until Wilson Combat shifted to using all of their “bullet proof” parts gun, it too used MIM parts in some guns, such as the early CQBs.
    The issue with the fiber in the sight was unfortunate, but that’s not a big issue and easily corrected. The rear sight coming loose is good to know as it’s something I’d want to loctite if pick one and don’t use an optic straight away. Your comment about the gap and potential for sweat causing rust is something that bothers me about so many guns coming optics ready, when I don’t intend to use an optic on every gun. I’d prefer the option to just buy the gun without the optic cut.
    Thanks for the informative, balanced review. I’m always interested in the mechanical accuracy of a gun; if you could incorporate groups from a rest in future reviews it would be good info for viewers. If the reliability issues have been sorted with the Prodigy, it seems like a great gun for the price point.

    • @NightwoodGuns
      @NightwoodGuns  6 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks for the comment, lots of good points made! I might start showing mechanical accuracy in the videos. I always test it but normally skip sharing jt to save runtime unless an anomaly happens since most modern guns are more accurate than most shooters can be free-hand.

  • @donkeydefense
    @donkeydefense 6 месяцев назад +1

    My experience with the Prodigy was similar but with more hiccups. I think the real place where they save money is quality control. Yes, there are all those MIM parts, but the true issues we see with it are not long term issues, but OTB issues, meaning its a QC problem before the MIM normally becomes a problem.

    One thing I'd say is this is a good platform for anybody who is new to 2011's and want to tinker with these guns. They can learn how to tune with new parts and really understand what these are all about. If buying a Staccato for your 1st 2011 then the odds of a newbie will not try to take apart and understand the platform.
    This is actually me talking here. I'm not a newbie to guns but i am to this platform. Haven't bought one yet so this might be right up my alley. I've been doing trigger and other upgrade work to all types of guns just not this platform.

Reliability issues up the wazoo FTF, FTE, failure to go into battery, sluggish slide, catching on disconnector, safety levers getting caught and even walking off with normal usage, rear sight plate loose out of the box, 7 pound trigger, the internal finish has been rubbing off and oozing out the back in liquid form(never even heard of this before) for 500 rounds + 1000 or so hand cycles. Sent back for warranty 3 times and some things have improved but overall still very problematic especially considering they advertise this thing as a "duty gun" which I did get for carry. I genuinely don't know what to do they have had the thing 4 times total and cant get it right and I don't see how I could ever trust it with my life/the lives of others ever.

      Sold my prodigies, great guns but I can’t keep my holosun from walking/dancing. My local gunsmith tried everything like cutting down the screw so the extractor would stop hitting it. Nope. So I got the a CS for the thinner grip! Any potential buyer should be aware of the optic issues with this gun.

    after some tuning my 4.25 prodigy's ( i had 2, one for ccw and one for the gun belt) shot as soft as my sti tactical 4 host. really enjoyed those for the ease of shooting and oddly enough how well i was able to get the trigger with some sear spring tuning. never had any issues other than with some really hot loaded turan ammo ( popped primer got stuck in firing pin channel) it was great. both ended up getting traded for lighter guns a C2 and a bul sas ul 2. both are fine. but for the price, they shot great. and that grip texture was actually really good with the right grip pressure.
    if they dropped a lightweight variant i'd probably grab another if they could get to around 25ish oz.

    I took my new 4.25" to range for first time yesterday. Did great for first three mags (one load out in 17 and two 20 round mags). Then the problems started. FTF and not going into battery. Now, having said that, I did not clean it at all before going, so it had all the OEM sludge in it. I'm hoping the good, deep cleaning and oiling clears that up. I also ordered a Staccato Mag so I'll try that. BTW, I thought those mags were over $100; I picked it up for $69. I really want this gun to work as I won't spend the $$ for a 'S' gun.....

    I have both the 4.25 and 5 inch versions and love them. Added a Magwell and slide stop to both. They have both run 100%. The 4.25 has a bit of drag from the disconnector but it hasn’t caused any malfunctions. Though it (4.25) does have the better trigger of the two. The rear sight on the aos optic plate did loosen up after a couple hundred rounds. I have a little over 1k rounds through both (more on the 4.25) and I’m happy with them. Hopefully they will break in nicely, and if any mim parts break at that point I’ll plan on replacing with some extras from egw etc.

    • @NightwoodGuns
      @NightwoodGuns  6 месяцев назад

      It all depends on what ecosystem of mags you want to invest in. Bul Armory didn’t make proprietary mags to be douchey, they designed their own durable/reliable mag because 2011 mags used to be notoriously unreliable. I think they are arguably better than 2011 mags. I own both and I just view it like owning a Glock and an M&P. Basically the same guns with different mags 😂

      Glad you enjoyed the review! MIM ejectors and thumb safeties break most often on 1911 style pistols. The reason you don’t hear about it more often is because 99% of people don’t shoot a significant amount of rounds through their guns 😂 But with some Google-fu you can find plenty of examples. The ejector on the prodigy is the most common breakage. I personally broke a MIM extractor on an HK USP Compact. Broke my heart and soured me on MIM.

    Metal injection molding....... sounds like a fancy way of saying "casting."
    I get that you can get a Turkish knock-off for cheaper, but what about the customer service and after market options for that? Would you be able to have them repaired or upgraded?
    And if it's being compared to Bul and Staccato, and it's not being laughed out of the category, then it's doing a pretty good job. Let's be honest, those are what I would call "luxury brand" or "boutique" firearms. This is an affordable option to rather un-affordable guns. There is no way there is going to be the same level of quality. But if someone who shoots those regularly doesn't call the Prodigy garbage, Springfield should put that feather in their cap.

    People just like to shit on Springfield any chance they get. But getting that out of the way, I agree with you overall that this pistol isn't really worth the money considering the alternatives. Even from the same brand, not a double stack 9mm, but their 1911s are much higher fit and finish for the same price. My Springfield Operator that was just about $1000 when I bought it has none of the fit and finish issues you pointed out about the Prodigy. The slide to frame has zero rattle or movement, no movement in the mainspring housing, and has been 100% reliable for me.
    But don't get my first statement wrong, I'm not at all saying the Prodigy didn't deserve a lot of the criticism it got initially. It did have a lot of reliability issues in the beginning, but it was a brand new platform coming from Springfield, having to work out some bugs isn't exactly an unexpected thing. From what I've heard from people I know in the gun sales industry, they have more or less worked out all of the major issues with it and the new Prodigy pistols should be reliable like the one you reviewed.

    • @NightwoodGuns

      It depends on the parts that they MIM. Low stress parts can normally be MIM without issue and since striker guns have less parts in general it’s easier to engineer. It’s when they pack a gun with MIM parts that include parts under stress that it becomes an issue. These striker guns were designed with MIM parts in mind. 1911s were not. An example of a MIM part failure I had is a broken extractor in an HK USP that is normally renowned for being incredibly durable. But because of a poor QC in MIMing, the extractor broke within 200-300 rounds. As long as everything goes perfect in production, MIM parts are fine. People swap to forged parts for peace of mind.
