    I'm writing a book called, "Crying at the Car Charger" because the struggle is real. There is no end to stories about the frustrations and horrors of road trips in an EV. I've personally had an emotional meltdown (tears, not rage) at two chargers and I will say that the EA customer service woman who helped me during one of those experiences was an angel who should be a therapist and a few days later I called the company to be sure that she was appropriately recognized for her superb and exceedingly compassionate approach to her job. I happen to be in pain from a medical procedure and told her, "I'm sorry, I'm going to cry" and she couldn't have been more lovely or helpful.

    Just finished 2,000 mile road trip in my Lightning. Your findings with EA/plug and charge match my experience. PnC never worked. I eventually found pre-swiping the start charge on my selected station would work. Time outs would often happen if I didn’t pre-swipe. BTW, charged perfectly on new V4 Supercharger in Columbia with Magic Dock. Made a video on that. Keep up great work.

    The NACS standard was designed by engineers to encourage EV adoption.
    The CCS charging standard was created by the ICE manufactures marketing departments to discourage EV adoption. With the hope EV’s would never catch on.

    I've never successfully managed to charge my Tesla at a non-tesla DC fast charger so the $200 is spent on a CCS adapter 8 months ago was a total waste of money. However, I've never been to a Tesla supercharger that wasn't in working order. The difference is beyond belief.

    I have been an EV owner since 2022. I had a 2021 Kona electric and now I have a 2024 Ioniq 5. The biggest issue with all of this is infrastructure. I started looking at electric vehicles in 2019. It is now 2023 and the infrastructure where I live (MD) is virtually the same. Very few ultra fast charging options. I live in Waldorf MD, and other than several Tesla stations, the highest charging CCS is 50kw. No EA, a few EVGO and they only have 2 - 3 stations Max! I love the electric vehicles, but the infrastructure needs to be addressed! I have a charger at my home so it does not affect me as much but I have seen where people were waiting for hours to charge because most do not have home charging options. I have been watching Dave and Kyle for years. Keep doing what you are doing because the squeaky wheel always gets the grease! I consider all the early EV owners the beta testers and we must report the issues to make it better for everyone else. Without struggle, there is no progress - Frederick Douglass.

    The only issue I have with other manufacturers and NACS is that most charge ports are on the wrong side, so those vehicles will take up two spots. Thus potentially turning your 16 stall charger into an 8 stall, which could then cause congestion at times. Hopefully manufacturers will relocate the charge ports on vehicles once they switch to native NACS and/or Tesla will have longer cables on all of their stalls

    • @gridjac
      @gridjac 3 месяца назад

      I hear the V4 Suoerchargers have longer cables and are more centered in the stall, so they should easily reach both sides of the vehicles. Hoping we see more of those soon!

      @stephenbateman7254 3 месяца назад +2

      @@gridjac that’s why I said I hope Tesla has longer cables when this gets going. V4 is longer and more centered, but they’re not really pushing too many out right now so it only helps a select number of charger locations. This will need mass adjustments country wide

    • @Geckogold
      @Geckogold 3 месяца назад

      Well, as Dave pointed out in the video, this particular supercharger has parking spots on either side, so hopefully if a non-Tesla is taking up two spots, that other stall their vehicle is parked in can be reached from the other side.
      I've noticed some recent Superchargers where Tesla has put them out in an open area rather than along the side of a parking lot to better accommodate a situation like that or a Tesla towing. Obviously space is the big factor here, but it's nice when they can do it in open areas. And I hope they speed up the V4 installations which should help resolve a lot of these problems in the first place.

    • @rusticroads
      @rusticroads 3 месяца назад +1

      The charge ports aren’t on the “wrong side.” Tesla is welcoming these vehicles with full knowledge about where their charge ports are located. It’s on Tesla to provide suitable facilities for all its customers, so if you want to blame someone for something you think is wrong, be sure you’re blaming the right entity and don’t take it out on the drivers who have to do what they have to do in order to use the station. Everyone needs to use their heads, of course, and not do stupid things (both Tesla drivers and non-Tesla drivers included).

    • @stephenbateman7254
      @stephenbateman7254 3 месяца назад +2

      @@rusticroads yes because my entire comment railed on drivers and their stupidity. Gotta love reading comprehension abilities of people on the internet. They are 100% on the wrong side/location for the way the chargers are currently configured. Yes there are ways to fix that, and it appears that Tesla is working on it (however very slowly). And yes, it is on the manufacturers of BOTH the chargers and vehicles to make sure things work cohesively. That means longer cables and more central dispenser locations from Tesla AND a charge port location from the vehicle manufacturer that works cohesively and correctly for the layout of the charging locations that will be the main choice for the majority of their customers

Many people ask me why I sold my 2023 Ioniq 5, not only was it the issue of 7 months to fix fast DC charging but all the problems I have had with my other CCS cars using Petro Canada, and EC in Canada they just do not work reliably or even at all and with such few charge points here in BC & Alberta they are getting long queues to line up for the actual working chargers. In BC Evs are very popular and sales are not slowing down other than availability of EV's are not the same as in the USA.

The EA station in Lebanon, VT, had only one functioning charger and two people ahead of us waiting to charge. We didn't have the patience to wait, so we drove another 75 miles to New Hampshire. We arrived there with only 5% battery life left. The EA station in New Hampshire had two out of four chargers working, with one car in line ahead of us. Laying on the schadenfreude a little heavy today, huh? Something to consider: words matter. Conflating CCS with EA's troubles is misleading, because EA could adopt J3400 "nacks" connectors and they would still likely have the same issues they have today. Even though most people can sift through the language and understand that you're really comparing EA to Tesla and not CCS to J3400 "nacks" some less attentive viewers could be led to believe that it's the connector and not the vendor that's the issue.

  • @fleecystheking

    NACS won't change EA's ability to be reliable. Tesla Supercharger has demonstrated with Magic Dock that their stuff isn't all that reliable with CCS cars. They are hopefully working on it but for now, NACS won't fix any of the reliability problems with charging CCS cars.
    Circuit Electrique, FLO are very reliable charging networks and they use CCS. Having a reliable DCFC network is 100% possible, with the right equipment, the right engineers and the right maintenance strategy.

More chargers is always better, and something is surely better than nothing.Cheers.

    Going to the NACS plug is not going to be the fix. First we need to see what happens. Tesla is currently a closed end system. Only time will tell.

    What blows my mine is where did these companies get the money to install those crap chargers and software? "tax dollars" Clearly they aren't making money from charging or you'd think they would be working.

    it's a darn shame the charging of ev's is so difficult to do with most of the none Tesla NACS chargers, Tesla did it right from inseption and that is awesome, shame on the rest of the other chargers what a let down Elon got it right, go Tesla

    No. Our local EV connect only works if you plug in first. My advice is read the directions before trying to charge.

    And people wonder why more people haven't adopted to the EV world. Tesla is marginally better, honestly. People will be bitching about the many non Tesla vehicles using the Tesla chargers as well. The internal combustion engine is so much better in so many ways.

    Dave, stop saying that the problem is the CCS connector. Most of the world uses that connector to charge their cars and they work fine. The problem in the US is that you have a shitty infrastructure for the chargers that use this connector but if all would use the same connector i believe they would take better care of them. Also I believe that the charge America or whatever they are called were not something that the company would want to put up but were forced to do because they did some "nonos" on their dinosaur juice car tests and this is what happens when you rely on that technology. If the chargers was made by a company that wanted to gain a profit for real they would take care of their chargers. Although I agree that the smaller NACS contact is smaller and more advanced etc... than the CCS contact.

      My job is to report on the realities of EV ownership. This is the current state of play from my lens on this particular topic. It’s simply challenging out there at the moment to own a CCS car and count on the existing DCFS infrastructure in the ground As things evolve and NACS support for CCS vehicles becomes a reality, this situation will evolve And I will be there to report on it Thanks for watching and sharing your POV

      Can't be eyes shut, ears closed about the current state of ccs chargers. I for one welcome this video that shows the crap show that is non tesla charging. I hate tesla and have spent close to 200k on different non tesla EVs and playing Russian roulette with every charging stop is annoying.

    For EA, I plug in then swipe. I noticed many folks give up prior to the handshake finishing. Patience, Grasshappas. I let the handshake complete and if it fails I try again. The only place I could not fast charge was EVConnect (1 station only) at Carolina Beach , North Carolina. I reported it and they said "we know" and I said well, please do a service request again to fix it.
