Why are Punjabis Decreasing in Indian Army?

- Over the years, Punjabis, particularly Sikhs have formed a major part of the Indian army. But did you know that they were present in even larger numbers in the British Indian army? Earlier, the British mainly had upper-caste Hindus and Muslims in their army- but then came the revolt of 1857. And that changed the status quo. More and more Punjabis (majorly Sikhs) began to be recruited in the British Indian Army. The dominance of Punjabis and Sikhs in the army continued even after independence- though somewhat in a milder form. But recently, these numbers have been declining. So much so that Punjab, which used to send the highest number of officers and recruits in the army- has been overtaken by other states.
What could be the reasons behind this? In this video, we talk about what are the major reasons why Punjabis and Sikhs were recruited into the army in such large numbers and then go on to discuss what are the reasons for the decline in this trend.

Not all Punjabis are Sikhs, I believe this video to be under researched. Majority of Punjabis are Muslims who are now Pakistanis. A lot of Punjabis are Hindus too. Punjabi means a person who originates from Punjab region and can be Hindu, Muslim,Sikh, Christian, Jain etc

One point you are missing here. The combined recruit from ex-punjab (Haryana, Himachal and Punjab) is still 20-30% of all recruits. Before the division of state, the data is of the whole combined Punjab. Right now when data mentions Punjab, it only mentions the 1/3 of Punjab left. Also a lot of Punjabis who migrated to different regions in India after partition are also recruited. Combining all it will show Punjabis are still heavily recruited in the Indian army.
Also , I guess partition must also be a reason of falling Punjab numbers in army, as in British times, Muslims and Hindu punjabis were also very prominent and those recruitment areas were gone to Pakistan.

India didn't exist before 1947. Italy didn't exist before 1860. Turkey didn't exist before 1914 and so on. Concept of Countries was invented in Europe in the 16th century. Before the invention of the concept of countries, there were only empires and kingdoms. Turkey was created after the fall of the Ottomans empire. Dozens of countries were created based on nationalities after the fall of the Ottomans empire. Italy was created in 1860 by merging various small kingdoms of Italian nationality. Similarly, Germany was created in 1871 by merging various small kingdoms of German nationality. Similarly, all European countries were created based on nationalities.
Now the question is what is nation and nationality? A nation is a society that shares a common language, culture, and history and has shared interests. For example English, German, Italian, Turkish, French, Russian, Dutch, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Punjabi, kashmiri, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Malyalam, Thai etc are nations and a country based on single nation or nationality is called a nation state. Most countries in Europe are based on single nationalities and are nation states or simply called nations.
India was created out of the British Indian empire on the basis of two nations bogus theory. Two nations were assumed as Islam and hindusim. But in reality, Islam and Hinduism are not nations.
A nation is a society that shares a common language, culture, and history and has shared interests. For example, English, French, Russian, Dutch, germans, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Punjabi, kashmiri, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Malyalam, Thai etc are nations.
There are dozens of nations within India and Pakistan. And hence India and Pakistan are union of nations or multinationalcountries. Nations are Punjab, Kashmir, sindh, Baluchistan, Gujarat, Bengal, Maharashtra, Tamilnadu etc. And in modern world countries are created on basis of nationality like the countries in Europe (England, France, Germany, Poland, Norway, Sweden, Croatia etc) or in Asia (Korea, Japan, China,Thailand, Philippines etc) and Bangladesh etc are countries based on nationalities. But India and Pakistan were not created based on nationalities but on two nation (Islam Hinduism) bogus theory. Hence, these countries are based on religions. Bangladesh was created on the basis of Bangla nationality in 1971..
Punjab should be a free country based on Punjabi nationality like Bangladesh. But Hindu Punjabis and Muslims punjabi don't want to leave india and Pakistan, so we Punjabi Sikhs can't force them to follow us. Hindu Punjabis, who had deserted Punjabi language in 1951 and 1961 census by declaring Hindi as their mother tongue would never support a Punjabi nation state. They support a Indian state based on the Hindu religion. Similarly, Punjabi Muslims of Pakistan dont support Punjabi nation state either. They support Pakistan state that is based on Islam religion.
Similarly, Bengali Hindus don't support Bangla nation state Bangladesh and want to live in India which is based on Hinduism. So Punjabi muslims, Punjabi Hindus, and Bengali Hindus are free to stay in their respective countries based on religions. But similar to Bangla Muslims of East Pakistan, who created Bangla nation state Bangladesh without Indian Bengali Hindus, Sikhs have the right to create Azad Punjab (a Punjabi nation state) without Punjabi Hindus and Punjabi Muslims. As simple as that.
We Punjabi Sikhs have no problem living in a Punjabi Muslims or Punjabi Hindu majority Punjabi nation state.
The Punjabi speaker population of Muslims is around 10 crore. Punjabi speaking population of Hindus is around 3 crore (Punjabi Hindus in Punjab, Himchal, Haryana, Jammu and Delhi). Punjabi speaker Sikh population is around 2 crore. Hence Sikhs would be minority if both Punjabi muslims and Hindus or either one of them come form a Punjabi nation state with us Sikhs. But their radicals minds prefer religion over their nationality and they love to give up their Punjabi nationality and adopt Hindi and Urdu nationality in order to create a state based on their respective religions.
So when Sikhs alone form a Punjabi nation state, it would automatically be a Sikh majority Punjabi nation state called Khalistan. What's in the name? You can name it whatever you want. But in practice it would be Khalistan just like India is a Hindu rashtra in practice regardless of its official name or regardless of its constitution..

@@gs043420 The saying was " when the sikh regiment fights in the battlefield , they don't count number of enemy soldiers even if they're outnumbered ".
The main decline was seen in numbers of Punjabi soldiers after 1984 (blue star operation) many soldiers quit their jobs during that time and after people never showed that mush interest in army as compare to past. Even in my village almost every family had one soldier before but now only 2 from whole village.

Punjabis are not equal to Sikhs 🤦 Well there are Punjabi Sikhs but you can't say every Sikh are Punjabis. Punjabis is a term used for the people of Punjab state only and it includes Punjabi Hindu, Punjabi muslims etc while Sikhs are the people who follow Sikhism.

Mohak bhai seperation of Haryana in 1966 from panjab is one of the major reasons for the decline in recruitment figures . Soldiers(muslim+ hindus ) from Haryana region of undivided panjab were also in good number . After partition of india pakistan and then division of Panjab in Himachal and Haryana changed the figure drastically.

I want to point a few things and I hope Mohak sees this :-
1) "Punjabi" refers to any person who speaks Punjabi or follows Punjabi culture,it doesn't matter what is their religion and where do they live.Sikhism is "religion".
2)Pre- independence Punjab consisted of Haryana and Himachal too along with today's Punjab.Haryanvis and pahadis even today have large share in army despite such small population like Punjab.
3) Caste-discrimination is prevelant in Sikhism too.Jatts look down upon Majbi and Ravidassia Sikhs.
Cast discrimination maybe in punjab but not for sikhs in other part of India.

Well I appreciate the information you have shared but there are some corrections to this video.
1. You are using the term "Punjabis" which might be correct but factually the stats you have shared in the beginning of the video are significantly contributed by "Sikhs". That nowhere undermines the contribution of Punjabi Hindus and Punjabi Muslims. But check the old videos, almost all of them are supporting turbans and uncut hair (Sikh attire)
2. You quoted some basics or pillars of Sikhism. One of the points was, "Sikhism was against doninant religions (Hinduism & Islam). This is absolutely incorrect information. Sikhism was established to prima facie eradicate casteism and blind superstitions.
3. You said that Guru Hargobind had 52 bodyguards. Again incorrect. He got 52 "pahadi rajas" released from Gwalior fort, who were imprisoned by Jahangir. (It coincided with Diwali, so we celebrate it as bandi chord diwas)
3. You said Guru Hargobind Singh. No Sikh guru had Singh suffix except Guru Gobind Singh Ji
4. A sect of Kashmiri pandits reached him because they were being forced into Islam. Pandit Kirpa Singh Dutt came to Guru Tegh Bahadur ji pleading their condition and he willingly accepted to sacrifice himself, when Guru Gobind Singh Ji (9 at that time) said that there can be no one greater than him whose sacrifice will matter. Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji told them to tell Iftikhar Khan, who was forcefully converting them, that if he accepts Islam, so will they. But he chose to sacrifice himself rather than convert to it.

Now the question is what is nation and nationality? A nation is a society that shares a common language, culture, and history and has shared interests. For example English, German, Italian, Turkish, French, Russian, Dutch, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Punjabi, kashmiri, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Malyalam, Thai etc are nations and a country based on single nation or nationality is called a nation state. India was created out of the British Indian empire on the basis of two nations bogus theory. Two nations were assumed as Islam and hindusim. But in reality, Islam and Hinduism are not nations.

But India and Pakistan were not created based on nationalities but on two nation (Islam Hinduism) bogus theory. Hence, these countries are based on religions. Bangladesh was created on the basis of Bangla nationality in 1971..
Punjab should be a free country based on Punjabi nationality like Bangladesh. But Hindu Punjabis and Muslims punjabi don't want to leave india and Pakistan, so we Punjabi Sikhs can't force them to follow us. Hindu Punjabis, who had deserted Punjabi language in 1951 and 1961 census by declaring Hindi as their mother tongue would never support a Punjabi nation state. They support a Indian state based on the Hindu religion. Similarly, Punjabi Muslims of Pakistan dont support Punjabi nation state either. They support Pakistan state that is based on Islam religion.
Similarly, Bengali Hindus don't support Bangla nation state Bangladesh and want to live in India which is based on Hinduism. So Punjabi muslims, Punjabi Hindus, and Bengali Hindus are free to stay in their respective countries based on religions. But similar to Bangla Muslims of East Pakistan, who created Bangla nation state Bangladesh without Indian Bengali Hindus, Sikhs have the right to create Azad Punjab (a Punjabi nation state) without Punjabi Hindus and Punjabi Muslims. As simple as that.
We Punjabi Sikhs have no problem living in a Punjabi Muslims or Punjabi Hindu majority Punjabi nation state.
The Punjabi speaker population of Muslims is around 10 crore. Punjabi speaking population of Hindus is around 3 crore (Punjabi Hindus in Punjab, Himchal, Haryana, Jammu and Delhi). Punjabi speaker Sikh population is around 2 crore. Hence Sikhs would be minority if both Punjabi muslims and Hindus or either one of them come form a Punjabi nation state with us Sikhs. But their radicals minds prefer religion over their nationality and they love to give up their Punjabi nationality and adopt Hindi and Urdu nationality in order to create a state based on their respective religions.
So when Sikhs alone form a Punjabi nation state, it would automatically be a Sikh majority Punjabi nation state called Khalistan. What's in the name? You can name it whatever you want. But in practice it would be Khalistan just like India is a Hindu rashtra in practice regardless of its official name or regardless of its constitution..

There's a difference between Punjabi and Sikhs. Punjabi is a geographic/linguistic identity while Sikh is a religious one above all. Punjab also comprises of Hindus and other religious minorities. It is dangerous to mix up identities, which can lead to unnecessary identity-based politics.

Something I want to add when you talking about Punjabis in British Indian Army.....they compromise of Sikh, Muslim & Hindu Punjabis and when India divided most of the Muslim Punjabis are gone on to join Pakistani army and it was its core ...so after Independence percentage of Punjabis in Indian Army already decreased.....then After independence of India they maintain big share in the Indian Army.....until recently in last 20 years it declined

Gurumukhi was specially designed for Gurugrant, which is why it was called Gurmukhi.
Punjabi did modify overtime, even after Gurumukhi became popular. But history of Punjab is older than Guru Nanak. 5 rivers in Punjab are flowing for thousands of years.
