Heathers is a 1988 American teen black comedy film written by Daniel Waters and directed by Michael Lehmann, in both of their respective film debuts.[6][7] The film stars Winona Ryder, Christian Slater, Shannen Doherty, Lisanne Falk, Kim Walker, and Penelope Milford. Its plot portrays four teenage girls-three of whom are named Heather-in a clique at an Ohio high school, one of whose lives is disrupted by the arrival of a misanthrope intent on murdering the popular students and staging their deaths as suicides.
what’s your favorite quote from this movie????
"f*ck me gently with a chainsaw" 😭😭
@@valetheelatina easily the best line!!!!
@@valetheelatinanoooo you said it before me 😂😂 I gotta go with my second
@@jaymeetsworld1I’ll say my second one since somebody already did the chainsaw one when heather said “you were a blue bird, you were a brownie , you were a Girl Scout cookie” idk but she ate her up 😂 also “greeting and salutations”
I love my dead gay son! ❤ 🪦 🩰
the impact this movie had on pop culture is actually insane. Winona Ryder turns it out.
Fr literally love Winona ❤️
Fun fact if no one else has said it: JD said the guns they used on Kurt and Ram were filled with “ich lüge bullets,” “ich lüge” is German for “I’m lying”
yes! i was hoping someone else would notice
Omg I knew he was lying but I didn’t know that
Literally love this reference as someone who learned German it was such a nice touch
Veronica shouldve learned german
Winona Ryder's agent tried to keep her from doing this movie, telling her it would be the end of her career, and now it's one of her most iconic roles and a legitimate cult classic.
I’m pretty sure her agent got on her hands and knees and literally BEGGED Winona not to do it 💀
This movie was a whole commentary on society at the time. Suicide was such a taboo no one would talk about it. After Heather dies you see Veronica's parents just being like "So do you have a date for the prom?" No one was taking it seriously or worried about their kids
Tbh, I don't think enough parents take it seriously now.
@@serenitymoon825 I mean sure, but really not in the same way. Now, if you told any adult that you were feeling suicidal or if someone closed to you committed suicide, you would be put in therapy, monitored, etc.
Seems like it wasn't a taboo then, and is a taboo now.
@@alicequinn505 Considering the word itself gets videos demonetized and is thus hardly ever whispered on this platform or in other places.
@@alicequinn505 I don't think so, I think it's taken seriously when done now but a lot of people tell others to k!ll themselves, like there's even a a short acronym(kys-k!ll yourself" for it that's used often when texting ppl now
“She might do it now for $50 and a little African child” made me choke 😂😂
Poor Madonna. She really needs to retire.
JD, the original Quiet Kid.
This movie is and will forever be a MOMENT the music, the outfits, to the casting it was perfect. I always say it’s a darker version of mean girls and it’s definitely was deeper than I expected to be such a fun watch.
All the "Mean Girls" advocates
need to see this film.
@@laustcawz2089I agree this movie is such a moment 😌✨
The whiney cafeteria music is priceless.
The only thing more perfect than this movie is the musical! I wish theyd give the movie a redo and fully comit to the music cuz there are tpo many hood songs to not introduce to todays youth.
@@TheGrossDemon I haven’t seen the musical in a while but I agree although I would be to scared of a remake they always ruin them now
The ending to Heathers is a direct contrast to J.D’s father and mother. His father blew up a building with the woman he loves in it, JD tried to blow up a building but ended blowing himself up instead of the woman he loves in a way to express his love.
exactly! in the musical he says “you were right about me. i destroy things like my dad. but i don’t want you to end up like my mom.”
stop that makes the ending way more sad
‘she might do it now for $50 and a little african child’ PLEASEEE the madonna shade😭
Except in this version, aliens are going to blow up the world in two days.
such a cunty movie , one of my all time FAVS 💖 Absolutely love the musical as well ✨
I didn't know you could say "cunty" on youtube 🤷♂️
The reason you didn't know about Shannen Doherty's red hair is that it's dyed. She was meant to dye it blonde to match the other two Heathers, but she wouldn't, so they let her dye it red. It seems to have started a tradition in the musical, too, where Heather Duke has dark hair and Chandler and McNamara are fair. In my fanfics, I tend to write Chandler as a strawberry-blonde, McNamara as golden-blonde and Duke as dark-haired. Veronica is always a brunette, no matter what. Funnily enough, I did write a fanfic using characters from a different fandom, and the girl standing in for Heather Chandler had gorgeous long black hair, while the Heather Duke character had shoulder-length brown hair. Needless to say, the red scrunchie didn't quite look as good on her.
@@strawberrysoulforever8336 what fandom was the fic for? 👀
@Lo0serx3 Total Drama. Heather Duke was played by Courtney. Unfortunately, it was after the reboot and a lot of people pointed out that Julia would have been a better choice, but I'd had this idea back in January before the reboot aired. Ironically, Julia took the minor role of Country Club Courtney.
The visual style of this movie is so good. And the bizarre dialogue sticks with you. The lines are truly odd but absolutely quotable.
RIP Heather 1, Kim Walker, who sadly died of a brain tumour in 2001.
RIP, she was a great person in real life
Between Heathers, Pump Up The Volume, and Legend of Billie Jean, Christian Slater was a poster boy for disaffected 80's youth.
Gleaming the Cube, too
An ode to him in a movie that was made in the same vein as this...Clueless..."Let's go to the movies and see the latest CHRISTIAN SLATER" said by Cher.
The Name of the Rose / Beyond the Stars / Kuffs / Untamed Heart / True Romance / Bed of Roses / Broken Arrow / Hard Rain!
… and your Zzavid shoutout made me laugh! (because I’ve seen Davids’ reaction to that scene. )😂🥰
lol I need to watch his! I haven’t seen it 😭
@@jaymeetsworld1 I watched it it was hilarious I promise
martha on the scooter was sending me straight into orbit LMAOOO.
lmaoooo it had me wheeezing
Shannon’s hair was actually dyed red fro the movie! The studio wanted her to dye it blonde like the other two, but she refused and they compromised with red!
veronica pointed her finger bc she was helping heather vomit
She really missed that "bulimia is so '87" line
Jay, you’ve given us so many good reactions this year. I’m so glad I found you, girl. Been binging ur videos since Missing. Thank you for all the work you do ❤️
thank you for sticking around!!! 💕😘
Redhead Heather wasn't pregnant, she was bulimic
Heather Duke*
Girlll Christian Slater in this movie low key has me in a chokehold
For reference: my entire fictional man thirst history is all toxic. It started with Prince Diamond/Demande from Sailor Moon.
every man-liker loves this man dw bae
OMG SAME😭😭
Definitely see how movies like mean girls got their inspiration from this, movie is a fun time and this reaction is right on time after totally killer lol
Heathers Will Forever Be The Starting Point Of The Mean Girls Clique
I Most Definitely Need A Scream Queens Reaction Now
My sister was born in 79 so she grew up in the 80s. I still remember her loaning me her copy to watch for the first time. So much nostalgia!
we all know Jay gon' shoot first and ask questions later 😂
i’m so glad you get it 😭😭😭
She picked the craziest guy to date and for what?! This movie is the moment
It’s not the moment
It’s the movement.
@wintermint9186 ...........is this a hamilton reference or am I just a hopeless theatre kid
The best part is when they kill ram and Kurt because when JD says they’re using Ich Lüge bullets “Ich lüge” is German for “I lie” 😭😭😭
“That’s Roseanne right?”
MA’AM 😂😂😂
winona ryder will always be That Girl
You should totally listen the Heathers musical / watch it if you can find it! its a great adaptation that gives the backstory to Veronica joining the Heathers! Also, the actress of Heather Chandler, Kim Walker, says the line "Did you have a brain tumor for breakfast?' which is so sad now because she died of a brain tumor at 31 :(
jay: this turned into The Horror Hour episode really fast
david: 😧 i'm sorry
😂😂😂
39:40 and that's how martha speaks (2008) came to be😭
Oh my Gods. /gen /pos
Omg the musical based on this movie is also just as amazing. I recommend listening to the soundtrack!
Omg the musical is amazing I've been watching the bootleg almost every night lol and I find myself humming Dead Girl Walking or Seventeen every now and then😂😂
Before the internet, this was how people were awful towards each other.
Impressively resourceful.
Easily one of my favorite movies of all time, this is one of the movies I can watch over 100 times and never get bored of it
The fact Heather Chandler says did you have a brain tumor for breakfast and she passed away IRL from a brain tumor is kinda crazy (no disrespect RIP to an icon)😭
And the actor that asked God not to let him commit suicide in the scene of Heather C's funeral actually commited suicide in real life.
Oh, sad for her.
I feel like Christian Slater is doing a bit of a Jack Nicholson impression here, and kinda keeps doing it for the rest of his career 😅 He's also very unhinged in the extremely dark comedy Very Bad Things (with Daniel Stern, Jeremy Piven, Cameron Diaz, and John Favreau). Or try the tamer ladies version - Rough Night (with ScarJo & Zoe Kravitz)
My list of best campy movies are...
Elvira Motd
Mommy dearest
But im a cheerleather
Heathers
Death becomes her
And clue.
I've loved this movie since I was a lil kid. "Well, fuck me gently with a chainsaw. Do I look like Mother Teresa?" I think is a quote I found so funny b/c it totally caught me off guard. Hilarious movie. And so many good 80s movies that I need to add to Jay's list on Discord. As always, so much fun watching the react.
i seriously will never forgive her for cutting out the part where jd says "chaos is what killed the dinosaurs, darling" bc i was gonna say it with him and it skipped it
Red Heather actress talks of having a brain tumour for breakfast and died young of a brain tumour and chap who talks of commiting suicide did in real life🎩
I would definitely recommend watching a bootleg of the 2014 off-broadway run of heathers the musical, you can find it on youtube! (not the current version because they’ve made a lot of changes since then and none of them are good lol.) I think the musical fixes a lot of the issues i have with the movie.
I think they changes they made were fine. The set is better and more elaborate, and I honestly like the added songs.
The way she said "Lock your paws!" (or the like) and you picked up on that growl lmaooo
Not fifty dollars n an African child😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 5:50
6:41 is so funny because they do kiss at the end
One of the best teen movies from the 80s methinks!
Since you liked this movie, you should check out 'Batman Returns', if you haven't already. It was written by the same screenwriter, and shares a bit of its acid tone - only with Tim Burton and superheroes. (Plus, it's very Christmassy, so, you know - timely.)
The part that traumatized me was when Veronica shot jds middle finger i wasn’t expecting that
"our love is god. let's go grab a slushie"
8:07 YESS! it's so surreal to be an exaggeration of everything! The Heathers are so mean to be exaggerated and JD is the exaggerated version of the stereotypical "bad boy"
So the actress who played red Heather actually died very young of a brain tumor, ironic because one of her iconic lines is “did you have a brain tumor for breakfast”
HELP THE REACTION TO HEATHER DYING??
Honestly watching this now the musical made this so much better 😭
I was just like you in not expecting the movie to be like this at all lol. Shit got real dark lol
both the movie and the theatyer version is sooo good
i'm so happy to have found someoene else whom I can relate to. Your videos are always so funny and entertaining, keep being you, you're fantastic Jay
r.i.p kim walker, heather chandler and shannen doherty, heather duke
First watched this movie around 1992 or 1993 when I was way too young to be watching it. But it was on TV, and my parents weren't home. Spent the next several years on a mission to get the whole thing on videotape. That's a story in and of itself. Love hearing people's thoughts on it, whether serious or mocking or somewhere in between. The girl you said had an amazing face but you didn't recognize? That was Kim Walker. Sadly, she died of a brain tumor young, several years after that famous line of hers about a brain tumor for breakfast. She played the Heather who died. I only know her from this movie.
I just realized Veronica's mom plays "Grams" on the TV show Charmed. The things you notice years later! Cool!
“she might do it for $50 and a little african child” is crazy 😂😂😂😂
If anyone didn't know the red Heather is named, heather chandler, the green one heather duke, the yellow one heather McNAMARA
"They should all be traumatized."
Nah, these are Gen Xers. They're a lot tougher.
Oh my god your Madonna burn had me rolling!! 😂
I only saw the musical so it was kinda weird watching this without the songs but damn this movie is still so amazing
Single favorite movie of all time literally don't think I've gone 6 months without watching it since the first time I watched like 7 years ago
Have you seen Rocky Horror Picture Show? It came out in 1975 and it still stands up as a tremendously important and timeless work of queer art. I highly recommend it if you haven't seen!
This is a fav movie of all time for me, glad u got to check it out❤
"Is that cheryl from riverdale" Honey riverdale copied heathers😭
well obviously didn't mean literally... I meant is cheryl modeled after her
@@jaymeetsworld1 ohh mk
Ich Luge bullets translates to I lie bullets... as in they weren't blanks!
For a Christmas suggestion: A MidWinter's Tale. It's a stand alone episode of the tv show 'Chilling Adventures of Sabrina'. I'd also suggest Batman Returns. Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman is ICONIC.
Gen X had some banger movies. My favorites were Pump Up the Volume, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Reality Bites, Dazed and Confused and Batman Returns.
I watched this as an adult and the chokehold this movie had on me. I was pissed I never heard of this movie sooner. I recommend Never Been Kissed with scream queen, Drew Barrymore
Small tangent, Never Been Kissed has always been a silly movie for me because when I first watched it, for some reason I thought that the high school teacher was the guy that egged her during prom night. I rewatched it recently and realized I made that up. 😂
@@zoc.6922 love a little revisionist history! In a slightly similar vein--to this day I don't know whether or not Guy Perkins (the popular guy that invites Josie to prom for real when she goes undercover) was in on the dog food "prank" the popular kids pulled on Aldys. I think I mosty believe that he was genuinely wanting to dance with her to make amends but I never have felt positive in one way or another. I feel like they presented Guy in a relatively "good" way, to kinda compare him to her original crush, Billy, so I'd like to believe he didn't know about that plan...
Poison Ivy w/Drew B and Sarah Gilbert from Roseanne is another dark high school age F’d up movie from early 90s
I’m technically “too young to watch this movie” but I know that the musical justifies some stuff, (I think) and I feel like it justifies some of the suicide. Like the one song “shine a light, reprise” is heather duke telling heather Mc (or Mac I dont remember) to kill herself. and it could be seen as ‘unnecessary’ but I think in modern day it really lines up with people or yourself saying “you should kill yourself,” and “you don’t deserve the dream” and then you try to do it, and then that ONE person OR thing that saved you, aka, Veronica.
I love that Heather Chandler calls JD Jesse James. Everything about this movie is ICONIC. You can definitely see how it influenced a lot of other Clique-y highschool movies like Mean girls and Jawbreaker
WHY DIDN’T YOU TALK ABOUT THE FACT THAT SHE LIT HER CIGARETTE WITH THE EXPLOSION WHAT THATS THE BEST PARTTT
23:00 Let's be honest, jay meets world, most of us is only a friendship with a J. D. away from committing atrocities...
omg i loved your reaction you should defiantly react to the musical or at least the songs i think you'd really enjoy them
Winona and Jay, two queens and my day was made!
It’s crazy that this movie came out before the school shootings started happening. I remember watching this and thinking that it was crazy and improbable, but then it wasn’t. It sort of changes the perspective of his character because it adds an unintended element of realism.
heathers never went out of popularity, you just weren't in the know
Why is this movie unironically quotable? 😭
Oh this is is a classic, still remember the first time I watched. I need to revisit it asap.
Such a formative movie for my edgy teenage self!!! For December you should watch better watch out if you haven’t seen it yet!! (Go in blind!!))
I LITERALLY fell from my bed at the Madonna comment 😭
It’s such a dark movie and done so well. 👏🏾
You should see the musical they have the best songs
YAY I am so glad more people are watching this movie.
After the xmas season maybe you should react to Natural Born Killers. It is way dark with a bit of comedy? Like twisted comedy.
Do ya know that homey comfortable you get when one of your fav’s post? I just got that🥰😋
sooo we're not gonna talk about how Heather's was made in 1989 and Mean Girls was made in 2004, and that Mean Girls took inspiration from Heathers and she's talking about Heathers being Mean Girls
I literally say at the beginning “I see how mean girls plays off this” so obviously I know heathers came out first???? I kept talking about how other movies drew inspiration from heathers
One of the jocks looks Nash Grier
People say Ed McMahon and the publishing Clearinghouse is a Mandela effect, but the movie mentions winning a million dollars and that big Ed guy giving the check
RIP Kim and Shannen
Ohh I just KNOW thet you’d love heathers the musical lmao-
I also would love to recommend “Valley Girl” it’s such a good movie definitely should look it up.
Heather McNamara hottest funeral dress ever
Most teen movies since "Heathers" have tried to be "Heathers."
AHHHHHHHHHH I LOVE THIS MOVIE ITS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO SLAY
5:49 Not "$50 and a little African child!!!" 🤣😭
You're so ridiculous and unserious!
Comments like *that* are exactly what made me subscribe to your silly ass! 💀😅
now you should definitely watch the musical! there's a recorded version of the west end, it's easy to find! :)
