It Follows is a 2014 American horror film written and directed by David Robert Mitchell. It stars Maika Monroe as a young woman who is pursued by a supernatural entity after a sexual encounter. Keir Gilchrist, Daniel Zovatto, Jake Weary, Olivia Luccardi, and Lili Sepe appear in supporting roles. It Follows debuted at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival and was later purchased by Radius-TWC for distribution. After a successful limited release, the film had a wide release two weeks later on March 27, 2015.

The key to the theme of this movie for me is in that speech she gives in the car right after sex. When you get older, you desire freedom, and then you get it, but you don’t know where to go. The only thing keeping you moving is the threat of death, which is made literal by the thing following her. You lose your ability to be idle, as you realize that nothing will last forever.

I really enjoy the 'not quite here' aesthetic in It Follows. There's just enough weird little things to establish that it's not our here & now, but locations still feels normal and relatable.

Oh my god, I lowkey love this movie. The scene on the beach when you can see IT walking towards them in the corner of your screen... the way I was STRESSED. Like... look around! Why are you dropping your guard, OUT IN THE OPEN????

This movie is what put A24 on the map for me. As a sex educator/coach, the metaphorical message this movie holds is spectacular. Also, Maika Monroe dated Joe Keery (Steve from Stranger Things) for 5 years.

I’m not gonna lie at first I didn’t really like it I thought people kinda over hyped it but, I went back and watched it again alone to really pay attention and honestly I judged to quickly. It wasn’t just amazing for me but I liked the concept was crazy the fact only she can see it, and it reminds me of the movie “Contracted”, where the woman sleeps with a guy who worked in a morgue and let’s just say he was being very friendly with the female bodies 😬 I don’t want to spoil what unfolds next you’ll have to check it out on your own time or maybe it could be a reaction. 😊

also!! to answer your question at 19:42, the setting is purposely anachronistic! there is no definitive year or time period because the film seems to take place in a world where shellphone e-readers and modern clothing can exist at the same time as vintage cars, old movie theaters, and antique television sets that only ever play black-n-white films. it’s as if *all* time periods (or at least, the last 50 years or so) are happening at the same time! one of the coolest parts about how this film was made, to me
This movie was like a fever nightmare when I first watched it. Jfc I had the same reaction as you when the tall man walked out from the dark. Lmaooo god I love this movie, I’m so excited for They Follow.

No matter how old and advanced and developed my tastes may become, I will *never* say no to a cheap a** Wonder bread sandwich, turkey, ham, cheddar, light Mayo, chips, preferably Doritos or lays waves, on the sandwich, press the bread down until you hear the satisfying crunch and leave finger indents.
And you gotta be at the beach or a pool, only time it is both good and appropriate. ❤️

So I guess, “It follows” is about the shame of a bad sexual experience (or any bad experience really) following you. No matter who you meet, where you go, or what you accomplish in life, that shame can consume you if you let it. Those closest to you may not see the impact of said shame, until it’s too late.
I’ve cracked the code on how to defeat the entity, once it’s passed on to a circuit party gay that demon won’t know rest until the end of eternity. Wouldn’t even be with someone long enough for them to see it 😂
The way I look at this film is that "It" represents mortality, especially since it only follows you after you sleep with someone who has it.
I feel this movie was using the intense fear of death as a looming danger as it is in real life. For it to be spread around by something that can be the creation of life is interesting.

I watched this around Christmas, I was on a family trip and me and my uncle turned this on for laughs and I actually enjoyed it😭😭OH AND THE TALL DUDE AND JUST THEM BEING IN BACKGROUNDS IN GENERAL LIKE AT THE BEACH WAS SO CREEPY

I'm happy this movie is finally getting a sequel, because I've wanted it to get The Purge treatment, where the sequel is what the first movie should have been. It Follows has a fantastic premise, good atmosphere, killer soundtrack, but where it falls apart for me is in the story. Everyone in this movie is too passive for me. Jay just kinda aimlessly runs around, like girl do you have any out of state friends or family you can visit for awhile? The third act pool scene makes no sense. They know nothing about it, what if it was slow on land, but fast in water?
Think it just aggravates me cause I feel like it could have been so good, and I wanted it to be. So I hope the sequel fixes those issues. I like Maika Monroe, you should check out The Watcher and Significant Other if you haven't seen those yet!
