      'Ressentiment is a reassignment of the pain that accompanies a sense of one's own inferiority/failure onto an external scapegoat. The ego creates the illusion of an enemy, a cause that can be "blamed" for one's own inferiority/failure. Thus, one was thwarted not by a failure in oneself, but rather by an external "evil."'

      Considering that the "conservative" concept of responsibility now includes criminal negligence and dereliction of duty, yes, society is very sick. What better example of the postmodern condition can we have than entirely superficial actors in control of nuclear weapons that threaten all life on earth?

      The Krishnamurti Foundationn discovered this isn't an authentic quote of his. The origin of this quote is probably a book written by Mark Vonnegut (Kurt Vonnegut's son) about his mental illness (The Eden Express: A Memoir of Insanity). The book was published in 1975 and attributes this phrase to Krishnamurti (spelled "Krishna Murti") without giving any sources. Vonnegut might have paraphrased or misquoted it, and it must have spread from there.
      Aldous Huxely - a close friend of Krishnamurti's - also has a quote that is remarkably similar:
      "The real hopeless victims of mental illness are to be found among those who appear to be most normal. Many of them are normal because they are so well adjusted to our mode of existence, because their human voice has been silenced so early in their lives that they do not even struggle or suffer or develop symptoms as the neurotic does. They are normal not in what may be called the absolute sense of the word; they are normal only in relation to a profoundly abnormal society. Their perfect adjustment to that abnormal society is a measure of their mental sickness. These millions of abnormally normal people, living without fuss in a society to which, if they were fully human beings, they ought not to be adjusted.”

    This might be controversial, but depression is a natural response to overwhelmingly negative stimuli. It is your mind telling you that things are not right and must be changed. To not feel depressed or anxious from time to time is the real sign of mental illness. This is, of course, just my opinion.

    • @mauve9266
      @mauve9266 4 года назад +28

      I see a lot of people where something bad has happened to them and they become depressed and I’m like well yes that would be the natural course of action. After all you’re unemployed or someone’s sick it’s normal for that to evoke a deep state of sadness. I suppose if you’re life objectively is going rather well and you’re depressed anyway, that’s a different matter

    • @DoloresJNurss
      @DoloresJNurss 4 года назад +29

      @@mauve9266 You're right--every emotion and impulse we have has its proper function, when it's in proper proportion. What you're describing is sadness. If we didn't have sadness, we wouldn't be able to recognize when things have gone wrong.
      Depression is sadness out of balance, prolonged cripplingly because it doesn't understand its own cause and therefore points to no remedy. In that context everything perceived then seems to cause sorrow, as the sufferer looks for some explanation to grapple with. Even good fortune becomes depressing, because the sufferer feels ashamed of not being able to appreciate it.

      @Zoe P I feel that ubiquitous mobile internet usage (iPhone 2007) is to blame for the loss of practical patience in most adults, and in effect, has decimated the working memory of the average person. If the majority of a society has lost its ability to understand the value of quiet solitude, rumination, contemplation, and introspection, what is left is a shallower version of normal society. Art reflects society, and for at least the past 15 years, art has grinded to a stand still. No new ideas are really coming out at the rate they once were; not at least in comparison to the percentage of the population. (Twice the amount of people, same amount of new ideas; equals, percentage of humans contributing to the advancement of human knowledge is going down.) Gen Z is fucked, to put it mildly. I can still remember a time before the internet; born 1986.
      The worst thing I've been seeing lately is the human 'story.' Almost everyone now is encouraged to share their 'story' or success 'story' or their life goals and achievements; but in the large scheme of things, most of us are very useless. We are, most of us, very unimportant, and to propagate the idea that the majority of society is special and has something to offer the world, I feel, is very dangerous. Why tell people that, "everyone is creative?" Most people are not creative. I feel that we are doing a disservice to uncreative people by telling them that they are creative and special; when in reality, if they were to have just gone about their business and lived their lives without the expectation of having to 'share' of to 'add' something to society, they might have actually served society and themselves better in the long run. Is their quality of life increasing if we tell someone they are creative, if they are actually not creative? Creative, being as objective as possible within the context of human development and forward progression of ideas and improving upon previous generations efforts; and not necessarily a generic 3rd year art students mediocre painting.
      Present Shock: by Douglas Rushkoff explores this phenomenon of everything happening 'now.' The human brain thinks linearly, and the internet is a distraction machine which breaks this chain of connective ideas into pieces and ends up making us feel lost and disconnected to the world. I gave up FB and IG, and am now only using RUclips. I feel that all social media platforms are shallow and for people who need or want instant gratification and dopamine stimulation through pseudo human connection without the threat of actually getting hurt or having consequences for their actions. Most of what we know as human interaction is lost through those platforms. Twitter emphasizes smaller text blocks in an attempt to keep things short and sweat; but short and sweat is not where the meaning is found. Short and sweat could also be defined as shallow. If most people are using shallow forms of communication, watching or reading shallow forms of entertainment, then after a few years to normalize everything and get most people on the same page, what we have left is a shallow culture, where tldr (Too long, didn't read) becomes a joke. I feel that most people should be embarrassed to claim that they don't actively read for pleasure, but it seems to be the normal state of affairs.

      @@TheShmekler I realize that you've given a lot of thought to this, and I respect your effort, but I disagree on some key points.
      1) Your fear that the Internet has destroyed memory echoes fears in some of the most ancient texts known to humankind, which expressed fear that literacy was destroying memory, since literates could simply write down a thought to remind them of it later. In fact every generation has fears that whatever newfangled thing the next generation does will destroy their ability to think. I've seen multiple generations now each saying the same things about the younger generation and swearing that they were never like that.
      2) The art currently hailed as great does seem to have stagnated. This is often the case. History goes through phases where large percentages of a generation's masterpieces only get discovered posthumously. This doesn't reflect a drop in creativity but a drop in the insight of art critics.
      3) I find the stories of everyday human beings to be fascinating and moving! My father, who had an IQ off the charts, taught me to appreciate people, that everyone has something worth saying; even the village idiot knows at least one thing that I don't know, that the human race is a walking library waiting to unfold for those who ask the right questions, and that those who are too proud to appreciate such a vast range of experiences as flows all around them every day are really missing out.
      4) You do have a point that no one should shame the uncreative, who have quite a lot to contribute to society exactly as they are. I just don't want to go back to the bad old days where creative people were treated like problems.
      5) I do agree that Twitter is mental mutilation. I don't twit. However I disagree about lacking opportunity for deep conversation on facebook and other platforms that don't impose a word limit. (Well, okay, sometimes on Facebook you have to spread things out over multiple replies, but it's doable.) For someone like me, who never had a chance to go to college, it has been wonderful to be able to socialize with professors, philosophers, mystics, scientists, poets and all manner of thinkers above my station, from all over the world, and all of the delicious food for thought that they have to offer! I can't tell you how much it means to me to be able to dive into such company, wrestling with new ideas, testing old ones, reveling in a synergy previously not possible in the days of my youth! The internet is as little or as great an opportunity as you want to make it. I am a much happier person because I finally get to savor what I have longed for all my life!

      Nothing of you is original? No, that's not quite right... it's simply that most of you comes about from your environment. Its certainly the case that you had very little control over most of the most critical details of your life, however, the whole thing? You should fight with every fiber of your being to be the person that you actually want to be. You are not merely a puppet on strings or keys being played on a piano. Psychological studies have shown that those who believe they have more control over their lives do better in a wide array of ways, while those who believe they are nothing more than the product of circumstances, do worse in life. Why would that be the case? Your more powerful than you know. You aren't just an animal. You are a human. Now, that doesn't mean much, but it means you have potential. If you want to be original, you can't just be expected to born that way. You have to create originality.

But hasn't all of Christiandom disobeyed Christ? I'm sure Jesus wasn't the magical being made out to be, but still His words resonate. Quantum physics describes a phenomenon called 'entanglement' whereby two particles can interact instantaneously beyond space and time, even though they may be billions of light years away. Entanglement is a fact - observable, repeatable and scientifically demonstrable. However, modern science is still pondering over how it actually happens.
      In the ancient Veda-Agamic tradition of Sanatana Hindu Dharma, this science of entanglement has been known for millennia by incarnations and enlightened beings and used as a technique to transmit the ultimate truths from the Guru to the disciple.
      HDH Nithyananda Paramashivam is the incarnation of this age, the Avatar who has happened to share the science of enlightenment with the world through quantum entanglement. This documentary aims to shed light on the phenomenon of entanglement, modern science's understanding of it, and how it works as directly revealed by an Avatar.
      To experience quantum entanglement for yourself, join Paramashivoham - a 16-day online immersive event to teach you the science of manifesting the ultimate consciousness in you. It's very hard watching people do the things they do, feeling as though you can understand, on some small level, why, but they can't seem to want to understand it for themselves. So, they continue on some bizarre spiral of action that bears no true fruit because at it's core, at their core, the call to said action is without a coherent foundation, which I'm gonna call a 'realization of self'. But maybe it's more like a solid self awareness. Aaaaargh thank goodness there's books written so long ago to actually give these weird thoughts some structure!

      Also, what a person sees as conformity and what people see a radical are very different in different contexts. For example, in the US, a right winger may see conformity as falling in with protests and social justice issues, where a leftist might say that upholding white Christian superiority is conformism. In China, being most types of devoutly religious is essentially criminalized, but in Saudi Arabia, religion is baked into every aspect of society and government and being atheist would be massively non-conformist. These videos don’t give any much-needed context. “Conforming” and “non-conforming” are not objective terms like dead or alive. But I think that’s part of the allure of these videos. They let you fill in those blanks as you wish, but unfortunately people can use it to rationalize whatever they think. And the creator is clearly fine with this as we never hear anything to the contrary. Almost cowardly in a way. They don’t have to take on any particular position, just let people read it as they will, draw their own erroneous conclusions and not have to answer for the direction those conclusions might take.

Kids now don’t understand this, they are told to be part of everything, to be nice to everyone, to apologize for others actions, to not question anything and just fallow rules; they are also told, they are all equal, to work in groups for the sake of others, these sounds familiar, right??? I'm a Death Row Exoneree and I say yes we live in a sick society. We've lost our connection to each other. We no longer believe because we can't feel. What happens to you happens to me, what happens to me happens to you. At some point you will come back as everyone that ever existed. If you are cruel to someone you are literally being cruel to yourself. Strive to be One with the Light. Be the change you want to see. Peace and love to the ALL. Be comforted in knowing that in the end ALL will be Light.

    "Do we live in an age where normality is a sickness?" This video asks us to consider whether being "normal" in a sick society is a sign of sickness within ourselves. The United States is a nation where a slave culture continues to exist in spite of well-intentioned attempts to eradicate it. Why is that? Is it because we are trying to change the outer reality without addressing the inner attitudes and unconscious mindset that keeps the status quo alive and well?
    True change requires a whole new mind, a greater mind, because we cannot learn greater things by building upon old ideas and limited concepts. An old mind cannot conceive of new things. We must be willing to look at ourselves and see how much we have been programmed by our culture, our religions, and even our family history to go along with majority opinion, what everybody's doing, what society tells us is "good" and sometimes by the loudest voices in the room or on the television.
    There is a way out of this prison of conformity if we know we are here for a greater purpose and want to contribute in some way to the betterment of humanity. The Way of Knowledge emphasizes no longer identifying with our surface mind, our conforming programmed mind because we have within us a greater foundation. It sets a different direction, towards freedom and redemption, towards empowerment and self-love. The mind is not discounted but takes its rightful place as the servant of Knowledge, communicating in ways that serve the greater good. Our minds are renewed and awakened to contribute to the needs of others, to collaborate with our fellow humans, and to experience gratitude for their gifts. (The New Message dot org)

That being said, I wouldn't regard him as any sort of spiritual leader. His prescriptive philosophy is far less impressive than the likes of the major world religions IMO. I think even he would admit he doesn't have any great solutions to our modern spiritual issues, although he certainly tried his damnedest. The attempt ultimately took his sanity and his life.

    A fable I once heard from somewhere I forgot:
    Once upon a time, there was a city. A wise and just king ruled over it, and it was a peaceful place. In the middle of the city there was a well. Everyday, everyone quenched their thirst with water drawn from it.
    One day the well was poisoned. How or by whom is not important. Those that drank from the well became mad and hysterical. They became a mob, decrying anyone who did not drink from the well as dangerous and unreasonable. They forced water from the poisoned well to be distributed across the city. Each citizen who had not tasted the water were forced to; under the threat of being ostracised and demonised, with the possibility of death. People tried to fight back, but relented when they saw their neighbours complying.
    Soon only the king himself had not drunk a single drop of water from the well. The citizens surrounded his castle, demanding that he drink from the well. Fearing he would be overthrown and be forced to give up his power, or even be executed, the king announced that he would comply with their demands.
    The king went to the well, and in full view of the city folk, he drew water from the well and drank it. The citizens rejoiced, for now no one was mad, and everyone was of the same mind.

    That last bit about how lack of personal power corrupts individuals and paves the way to tyranny is so timely. It ties very well with the idea of private property that drives capitalist accumulation. By definition, producers have almost all the personal power, while workers have almost none. I think all of this would make a great bridge towards socialistic ideas. I would love to see you do a video on the relationship between communism/socialism and the ideas of personal power (or extreme ownership, to use the words of Leo from Actualized.org) and responsibility. The "back to the land" generation of the 1960's and 1970's were on the right track. Mega cities are unhealthy and unnatural places to live. We need some centralization but when our centers get to be so big, they become perfect breeding grounds for infections. Airplane travel for the masses doesn't help either. What was wrong with taking six weeks to sail from Europe to NZ, for example? We treasured our trips more. There are just too many of us and yet we continue to breed and allow our populations to be increased by unwanted migration.

    • @Mrskateboardboy
      @Mrskateboardboy 4 года назад

      @Raimonster There would be no order to society without some centralization. I agree, however, that the further away and bigger the centralization is, the less effective it is likely to be. Thomas Jefferson believed, in the beginning at least, in decentralization and he wanted strong states and a weaker central government in Washington. He was also one of the first presidents to abuse his power and used it to push through the Louisiana Purchase. As one wag at the time said, "The President used what we have too little of (money) to buy what we have too much off (land)." Or something to that effect. It was more a comment on Jefferson's values than anything else. In this case I am using it to comment of Jefferson's "changing" values.
