As a long-time passionate fan of the world of Dune, this is the best adaptation of the book...even if it is just the first half of the book. The 1984 version directed by David Lynch was more like "Scenes From Dune". And the 2001 SyFy miniseries version 'Frank Herbert's Dune' (and the sequel 'Children of Dune'...which was actually books 2 & 3 combined) didn't have the scale. I loved all the versions, some people don't. But this was just superb. The books are wonderful, but very, VERY dense and have layers upon layers of meaning. Politics. Ecology. Religion. Spirituality, Economics. Nothing is extraneous in the books...especially the first three books by Frank Herbert in the series: 'Dune', 'Dune Messiah', and 'Children of Dune', because technically all three books were meant to be one big book (kind of in the same way 'Lord of the Rings' was one one book split three ways.) In science fiction, 'Dune' is held as high esteem as 'Lord of the Rings' is in fantasy.
The Atreides and the Harkonnens have been mortal enemy houses for a few thousand years...they have a long standing vendetta against each other.
Two characters, Thufir Hawat (Stephen McKinley Henderson) who serves House Atreides and Piter DeVries (David Dastmachian) who serves House Harkonnen are Mentats. Human computers who have trained their minds to work with the speed and accuracy of a computer...as computers and "thinking machines" are forbidden (long back story on that one).
Paul, in the book, is 15 years old...and ages to 17, maybe 18 years old over the course of the story. In the first part covered by the film...Paul is 15.
The Bene Gesserit sisterhood training involves being able to direct their own biology...meaning when the Rverend Mother told Jessica to bear only daughters, Jessica knew how to make sure she bore only daughters to Duke Leto. However, Jessica loved Leto, and bore a son because Leto wanted a son to be his heir. Quite a lot of the problems in this story, and through a lot of the 'Dune' novels is because Jessica didn't do as she was told to by the Sisterhood.
Planet Caladan exteriors were filmed in Norway.
The rest of the exteriors were filmed in Jordan and the United Arab Emerates.
The "dragonfly" ships...are ornithopters or thopters...this is the first time a film has actually got those things RIGHT! And they look amazing!!!!
The Baron Vladimir Harkonnen wears a suspensor belt because he is so large, he can barely walk...and how that happened is told in the 'Dune' books written by Brian Herbert, Frank Herbert's son. Suffice it to say, I will not tell how or why as it is also a spoiler for a second movie that finishes the first book's story. Because of the belt, which uses anti-gravity tech...he can float or hover quite high. Stellan Skarsgard is the first "Baron Harkonnen" to be truly frightening.
Duke Leto knows that the Emperor is involved. He sees the trap when he is granted fief over Arrakis. There is a line in the book, "The first step in avoiding a trap, is knowing of its existence". The opportunity for the Atreides was too good. Also, the other alternative is for the Atreides to go "rogue". Which would basically destroy the House, as there is nowhere in the Imperium for them to really run.
The Spice (also called Melange) is a geriatric substance. It will extend a person's lifespan and it will expand consciousness (which is key to Paul's story). Paul has been trained by his mother in the Bene Gesserit ways, he has also been trained to think like a Mentat by Thufir, and add the genetic lineage that Paul bears...Paul is very powerful!
Dr. Yueh is a Suk doctor, trained to be absolutely trustworthy enough to watch over the Emperor. No Suk doctor had ever betrayed their patients or their House before Yueh. Which made him the perfect traitor.
Paul's main ability is that he has presience...the ability to see possible futures. It is not "This will absolutely happen!". Frank Herbert described it as being in a raft in a very choppy sea, the tide raising you up and down...but able to see where to go when the tide carries you high, and making small changes toward the desired future.
The worms are important. I hope that they will explore why in the next one.
The mouse, is a kangaroo mouse, and they are desert creatures. In Arabic (which is basis of the language the Fremen use) the mouse is "muad'dib".This is VERY important...
There is so much in this that foreshadows what will happen in the second half of the story ('Dune - Part Two'), but also across the next two novels. So many things I want to say...however, if you were to read the books, you would get quite a lot of the answers. Hell, even just watching the miniseries or the Lynch film would also give you some of the answers.
The novel has a very anti-climactic end...on purpose. So the movie having an anti-climactic end is natural. It is however, a great beginning...and as Frank Herbert wrote in the novel, "Beginnings are very delicate things." This first film is an excellent beginning...I cannot wait for more!!!

The problem is...Herbert was wrong...about...everything. Granted, he wrote it all in the 60s when people's understanding of any of it was little better than that of an overconfident toddler's. Though, things haven't really improved in the intervening decades, either. But, the characters and events are still engaging, and the scale is still extremely impressive.

Dune is a very "different" kind of world by a very "different" kind of filmmaker. So, in that sense it's really a perfect match made in heaven. It's a dense, complicated franchise filled with deep undertones of philosophy, religion, geology, political intrigue, culture and language. Never mind about the cool tech-y stuff and the fact that it's sci-fi. Basically, it's Game of Thrones on an interplanetary scale.

the choice is to either cut out important segments of the book for a film adaptation, make a 5 hour film that will never make enough in the box office or cut it into two or three films to preserve the impact and epic-ness of the book that has parts that are inconclusive. This is the sad reality of film making. Dune will be made to be viewed by fans all in one sitting, back-to-back.

I think you've watched too many prophesy movies where the one always ends up as the good guy hero. If Paul ends up being the one in this story, that doesn't necessarily mean it's a good thing for the universe. The Benne Gesserit serve their own idea of what the greater good is. But the greater good for some might not be that great for others.

  • @RandomBlair
    @RandomBlair 2 года назад +144

Regarding the Bene Gesserit and setting a child's gender: Through intense ritual, the Bene Gesserit have learned to break through mental barriers. Meaning: They can move any muscle without using another, like moving just one muscle in their little toe because they can control every single aspect of their physiology. So yeah, they actually do have control over the gender of their baby, they choose it after careful planning. And usually, a Bene Gesserit only bears daughters. Lady Jessica has defied her Sisterhood by birthing Paul and training him in their ways. For centuries did the Bene Gesserit breed and strategically crossed families and bloodlines. Lady Jessica's and the Duke's daughter initially was supposed to get married to Feyd-Rautha (of House Harkonnen, the Baron's nephew), who also was produced through breeding. Their abilities are remarkable, they cannot be poisoned because they are able to neutralize the chemicals in their system and alter them. It is forbidden to them, but they are able to slow their aging as well. Jessica is such a skilled fighter because her mental and physical control allows her movements which are too fast for the average human eye.

Just went to the cinema last night to see the movie, and was very impressed with the look and feel of it. I put off watching your reaction until after I had seen it first myself. Now was curious to find out what you both thought, so thanks for doing this so soon after release. Being familiar with Star Wars, Star Trek, and plenty of other sci-fi movies and TV, I loved the strikingly individual design, art direction, costumes, ships, and other components in this movie. I also felt it was very well cast. We stayed and watched the credits run, and that is a huge list of talented and skilled people who contributed to this production! Filming locations in Abu Dhabi, Norway, etc. Lots of Hungarian movie people involved, and visual effects people located all over the world. And while the movie ending came at a spot not unlike the end of "Fellowship of the Ring", I can understand why it felt awkward to you. The journey into the desert (literally and metaphorically) is beginning...
I read the first three books in Frank Herbert's Dune series about 45 years ago, have revisited them a bit more recently, and have seen the David Lynch movie and the two TV mini-series versions ("Dune" and "Children of Dune", together covering the story from the first three books), too. This new movie is terrific! Hope that the next instalment - and hopefully more than one - are green lit and completed soon. Fine epic-scale movie-making, rather than an indie-scale character piece, like "Before Sunset" and that series.

Great thoughtful reaction. Love the books. The film captures the story well despite skimming over a lot of stuff (which is odd, given the running time and plans for a possible trilogy) and not showcasing inner monologues (my fave aspect of the book, especially when characters are reading people). The Dune vs Star Wars thing is like if someone saw a cool red fridge and decided to also paint their bike red. Despite the obvious inspirations they both remain different things, exploring different themes and providing different answers. This is how art works. Artists just take stuff which inspire them and make it their own in order to create their own thing. You can like both. The existence of one doesn't invalidate the other.

In my mind there is no such thing as Dune vs SW
      both are awesome story's!
And even if SW has some obvious simularitis in his story,
I never would say that Lucas just stole from Dune
And I also don't mind it, if an Artist builds his art on someone else's art
Getting inspired by someone else, is the natural way of creating something new.

The reason why I think, that Lucas is not that much of an "visionarie" ,is his Timing
      G. Lucas devolped star wars, almost immediately after the first attempt to bring Dune to the Cinemas ultimately failed. (Because it became to expensive)
The movie was highly anticipated in the Sci-fi community this days.
And Lucas was aware that a scifi movie that would fill the gap, could lead to a decent box office success
That makes me thinking, that his priorities lay more on creating a successful movie, than telling his own personal develop story.
Which is perfectly fine! Since he is a Director and not a Book Autor
And SW turned out by right one of the biggest Movie franchise ever seen!
But still one reason for this sucess, is that it came to the Movies before dune
Just like the success of Dune(2021)
Is also partly based on the fact, that it came after SW

I think the movie did not totally blow you away completely because so many parts of this story have been borrowed for decades to inspire other sci-fi stories. A classic like this kind of looses a bit of its shine when it is so often imitated.
I think it perhaps feels "different" because Dune was written in the 1960's. It is missing all the familiar beats to the story that we're now used to thanks to corporate-run entertainment with focus groups and studies to determine X amount of dollars from their film formulas. Never a dull moment, a joke or explosion every five minutes or so, etc. The Marvel universe is adept at this kind of template, but even their well-crafted versions of entertainment can wear off after a while.
Dune just takes its sweet time to tell the damn story in a thoughtful manner. It has a lot of heavy things to say, and will take you entirely into this other world to say them.

The visual world building is on par with the source. The movie's ending didn't seem as odd to me. I thought it was a very natural fitting end, where we see Paul constantly have visions of Zendaya in the beginning very uncertain about his future in Arrakis, we end with them actually meeting, and Paul making the decision to stick with The freman. That is a full arc in my opinion, perhaps not as big as we are used yet complete (for this movie's purpose). I didn't realise people thought it was an odd end.

It symbolizes the people they must become to accomplish their mission. Changing who they are and accepting the responsibility set before them.
I’m a huge LOTR fan as well. The movies are sacred to me. But Fellowship doesn’t stand alone. The journey only begins when the fellowship fails. There is no closure to any of their stories. They all have closing scenes that setup the following film, just as Dune.

@@whitenoisereacts Are you out of your mind? I'm asking seriously, because you seem "touched" in the head. The ENTIRE POINT of LOTR is for Frodo to destroy the ring of power? If that isn't accomplished in the first film then it DOESN'T "stand alone" and "work for itself". "Fellowship" is literally the beginning of a mission to do ONE THING and that one thing is nowhere near to being accomplished as it ends with them setting off to do THAT thing. It's the first part of a three part story that culminates in the third act with that mission being accomplished.
Without all three parts of that story, the point of the story is never realized.
      This is what you're saying.
Aragorn: I'd followed you into the fires of Mt. Doom, if you'd let me.
Frodo: Speaking of Mt. Doom I gotta get going. You know, gotta destroy this ring and everything.
      Aragorn: Farewell, my friend.
      Frodo: Yup. Bye.
      Sam: I'm coming with you.
      Frodo: Oh, Sam.
      The End.
That's LITERALLY how that first movie ends, Sam and Frodo head off to BEGIN THE JOURNEY to do the thing they were charged to do and you're saying it works all by itself?!
But that's also EXACTLY how Dune ends!!! Paul comes into manhood and decides to see his father's wishes fulfilled by making allies with the Fremen so they can fight the Empire and the Harkonnens! Paul heads off with the Fremen to do the thing his dad was attempting to do.
How do you not see that they are the exact same thing?
Paul was uncertain about his ability to take a leadership role when his dad said "you're the future of our house, son". Then he witnesses the destruction of his house, the death of his dad and manipulation by his mom's cult and finally decides, upon meeting the Fremen and killing his first man, that he IS going to take charge, not leave the planet as his mother wants to do, but rather stay on Arrakis, fulfill his father's wishes and begin to move toward the destination of fighting back.
      That's called a character arc.

One important thing to keep in mind is that this film only cover about half of the first book. Though the end may seem abrupt and slightly jarring, it is a logical place to stop for many reasons.
      1. Because this story is so dense and rich with material, characters and themes that trying to cram all that into a single film just would not do any justice to the source material.
      2. At this point in the story there is roughly a 5 year time jump in the story and I have heard the director wants his actors to physically age in real life to more accurately depict that time has passed.
There is so much to explore and learn in the DUNE universe. I highly recommend reading at least the first couple books.

What a coincidence. Dune also made George Lucas think up Star Wars in the first place.

In all honesty you said you will watch a movie before reading the book. I cant help but agree with that statement. If you watch a movie before you read the book its easier to appreciate the movie. Otherwise you will constantly be comparing to the book. That said the books are overall better because they have more time to build the story.

read the book. The spice extends long life (as in by hundreds it not thousands of years in some cases), it grants greatly enhanced mental abilities and the ability to see into the future. it grants the ability to travel great distances in space. it is literally what holds the universe together.

I love Space-feudalism. The Emperor quietly backing a smaller weaker but richer House (harkonnen) against a more powerful House (Atreides) in order for the Emperor to maintain his own power. This is full on Medieval Germany/Holy Roman Empire in space.

I do think the score would have been better if it was more classical in nature like Star Wars. Hans Zimmer said he purposely didn’t do that because he wanted Dune to feel alien and as a kid he felt like Star Wars’ music made no sense even though he liked it because it had Earth instruments. But I think that’s a weird way to think about it. And that music like Star Wars would have enhanced the movie as opposed to didgeridoo and woman screaming sounds. But that’s just my opinion.

Never read the books, saw the trailer and thought it was going to be awful. Reviews were good but still went in hesitant.
It was a masterpiece. Going to the cinema to watch it 5 days later this weekend to get the full experience it deserves. Then I am going to read the book's, usually the other way round for me. Kudos to Villeneuve!
(30/10/2021) Returned from the cinema, the movie was even more spectacular. With many more things noticed and appreciated on a second watch. Never going to a public cinema again though, half the crowd should not be allowed out of there homes, let alone into a immersive movie theatre experience. The selfishness of some people makes you question your faith in humanity. Even so, Part 2 cant come soon enough. Now the books await me!

I feel like people gloss over killing a fellow person like it's nothing, and no wonder, since that's how it has been approached in most movies. In Batman begins we see a bit of Bruce's struggle with this, but I cannot immediately recall another movie where this is part of the character development.
This actually might be the arc you're looking for: Paul taking his first life is not self-evident, but he overcomes this because of a higher prupose, and it takes it's toll on him. Just imagine what he feels after it is done, while still knowing it was not strictly necessary. Lost innosence, arc resolved.

Something that might help with the time is that even though its the year 10,000 ish, its actually 20,000 years in the future. This is because the standard calendar in dune is the imperial calendar and the year 0 is the formation of the spacing guild

I disagree on being more disappointed if you read the book first. There were things deleted. But my memory and imagination filled in the blank. The Lynch movie tried to cram too much into a standard movie time. It did not work. So the film makers of this movie took it slower and focused on the survival of Paul and Jessica. It worked fine for me.

A pity that one thing was not delivered in the movie, at least is not super clear:
Yueh didn't betray to exactly "save" his wife -- he did it so they let her die.
This is a detail but on one hand paints the Harkonnen more, and also shows how much premeditation everyone in the future have.

    Glad you liked it!
Indeed, the story is quite compelling but worldbuilding needs its time, and they stayed pretty close to the original story and scenes of the book. Some details were omitted, but that's unavoidable when adapting such a lore-heavy book. As to give your mom some additional info on the lore and politics of the Duniverse, so it becomes a bit more clear:
You have 4 major powerblocks in this universe:
1)The Emperor (and his army, the Sardaukar)
2)The Landsraad, consisting of a dozen Great Houses (and many Minor Houses, all vying for power). Think Game-of-Thrones here, but in sci-fi setting. ;-)
3)The Bene Gesserit; a semi-religious Order of women whom have certain powers (like the Voice, or being a Truthsayer, and some others not shown yet) and exert a lot of behind-the-scenes influence, but mostly stay low-profile
    4) The Guild Navigators and CHOAM; a strong mercantile power, with a monopoly on spacetravel
It was more or less explained in the beginnings when Paul talked with his dad on Caladan: House Atreides is a growing power, politically and military, and the Emperor feels threatened. But he can't directly attack the House, because otherwise the Landsraad (the ensemble of Great Houses) will turn against him. As said, they each constitute a "big power" in this Duniverse. So the Landsraad and the Emperor keep each other in check, as it were.
Meanwhile, the Bene Gesserit are working from the shadows, on both sides - they primarily are concerned with their own plans and devices, to create the Kwizatsh Haderach. They manipulate from the shadows and actually form the third great power in this universe, but seldom show it openly. They also exert power by political marriages, or become concubines for political advantages - which is why Jessica wasn't married to Leto, though it was done to benefit him and House Atreides, not herself or the Sisterhood.
The fourth independent power, which is hardly touched upon in this first part of the movie, is CHOAM and their Spice Guild. They're like a huge mercantile power, and the Guild Navigators are the only ones able to move/teleport between planets, so without them, there would be no viable interstellar Imperium. Which make them essential and an enormous powerhouse as well - though, of course... they are and remain dependent on the Spice. That's why: whom controls Arrakis, controls the Empire.
So the Emperor can't directly attack a Great House like Artreides, or he risks all-out war with the Landsraad, consisting of the other Great Houses. Instead, he uses an indirect attack, with and through the Harkonnens - who want their fiefplanet back with all the Spice - doing the grunt work for him. The emperor knows they will be easily instigated that way, certainly because the Atreides and Harkonnen already have a centuries-old feud going on between them. It's a sort of proxy war, thus. He does help the Harkonnen to make sure they'll win - hence why he sends a few battalions of Sardaukar, his elite troops. But no-one (especially the Landsraad) may know about that. (That's also why they killed Liet, because she was going to expose the Emperor's meddling).
Also, some details one might have missed in the movie: About the time in which the story plays: in the beginning of the movie they show it's the year 10191, but this is not 10191 AD, it's 10191 AG. AG (After Guild - when the Spice Guild was made and started exploring the stars), and BG (Before Guild) are the iterations used and the lore in the books gives some indication as how that relates to our AD (Anno Domini). The most precise date - with a high level of accuracy - is that the first Dune novel which is set in 10,191 AG, corresponds approximately to 23,148 AD. It is mentioned the "space age" takes place in 11,000 BG, and assuming this would mean it began in 1957 AD as this is when the first satellite, Sputnik, was launched, we can rebuild the whole timeline to our AD. So if you add the year 11,000 BG to 10,191 AG you’re left with a time span of 21,191 years. So if you add 21,191 years to 1957 AD, you’re left with 23,148 AD as the most likely date. Quite some time! Most casual watchers of the movie think it's almost 10000 years in the future, but it's actually more than twice as much!
Now...as far as the melee fights and old/new tech are concerned, it's important to realize that in the Duniverse, while there is very high-tech at CERTAIN aspects, others are low tech (which gives the retro-feeling of the movie) but with a reason. It may seem strange at first sight, but note, however, that this has an in-story explanation, namely: thousands of years ago, there was a rebellion against "thinking machines" (AI) called the Butlerian Jihad. Humanity won (barely), but since that time there is a very strong taboo on creating anything resembling robots or AI, and humanity started to develop their own powers (aided by the melange/spice), such as Mentats (basically human supercomputers). This is the reason you don't see any highly developed robots, AI or even computers in this world.
This mix of old and new tech is a defining, historically explained element of the Duniverse; it's part of the worldbuilding and lore. Now, specifically about the melee combat: maybe you missed it, but they explained the shields in that fighting scene; they said "the slow sword can penetrate it". This is a hint that ALL objects with high kinetic energy are stopped dead in their tracks when hitting the shield, but SLOW objects can penetrate it. Meaning: ALL of our "modern" warfare weapons would largely become obsolete: machine-guns and all fast moving shells/bullets etc. become useless, but swords and knifes that are SLOWLY moved can still reach a target through the shields. Making the use of swords and knifes, after thousands of years, the dominant way of fighting once again. It's actually a cool twist.
That's all I'm going to say about it, because any more would get you into spoiler territory for part 2! ;-)
Hope that made things more clear!
