I am learning how to tie and fly and recently tied a minnow variation on a 1/64 jig head and tried in a stream full of oscars, tilapia, peacock bass, small mouths and other species, and was able to catch 2 peacocks bass using it on a Tenkara and a budget old fly rod that my best friend gave me a few years ago and I only used it once. I definitely gave the "fly" some action will small ticks... not sure if it is similar to euro nymphing but not conventional for sure. It was a lot of fun though. Love Phelps' videos. He deserves a bigger audience.
As an avid fly fisher I enjoy euro nymphing. I enjoy all types of fly fishing dry, euro, and Spey. Also Erika I commend you on using barbless hooks, to bad not everyone is that conscious of the trouts well being. Also if you watch the tactical fly fisher video on the 5 steps to landing more fish it can really help you. I did it and I definitely don’t lose as many fish as I did before. I enjoy most of your videos keep up the good work. Since I live in Montana maybe we’ll see you on the river.
Euronymphing IS my favorite. Dry fly snobs are everywhere out there. I just want to catch fish and Euro is the best way……IMO. Also, you know when you have a whitey because they just hunker down. I don’t think I have ever had one come out of the water. I used to hate them when targeting trout but they fight good so I am good with them now. Great stream and awesome vid man!!
Excellent presentation, no pun intended! One thing... Trout don't 'eat' a fly, they 'take' it. They aim to eat it, but the angler spoils their plan. I don't know how the word took on this connotation among fly fishers. Language does evolve, but in this case, it has deteriorated. 'Eat' once meant 'injest' or 'swallow'. Now the meaning is imprecise. And yes, I am an English language crusader.
Dude you are such an inspiration! I hope you come out to RI, and chase some stipers, albies, and bonita on the fly. I also have found an amazing brook trout fishery.
When you're euro nymphing you'd actually want monofilament line all the way to your reel. That way you can also fish from further away and the mono won't sag like the heavy fly line will. It will make a world of difference in feel. I personally use a 10 inch snippet of braided orange backing line as an indicator to which I attach a fluorocarbon leader. It's helpful when you want to know that your flies swim at the right depth. There are also special light euro nymph fly lines made for this purpose but I don't see why people pay for those. A longer rod also helps. Most people prefer a 10 to 11 foot #3/4. Greetings from Finland!
I love a good dryfly day! But whatever works, really! I mean, anyone knows regardless of what you're using. If you're feeling the tug, you'll be smiling! Great video
drakes on that particular river are one of my favorite events of the year. so much fun. also, euro dorking is pretty fun out there as well. love the video.
Size of river I dream about! Love to talk tight line fishing over a beer. Much misunderstood and in our New England rivers given all the pressure can be the way to go…as I tell my friends who are stuck to one method or another You gots to figure out how they are eating then what they are eating and matching hatch tight line, dry, streamer it is all about hunting
Really enjoyed that one, and all the vids your doing. Gotta say, that’s my perfect water. Bit of nymphing, but if dry dropper, good surface action. Contact nymphing…I think of it as another branch of fly fishing. Unsure why there is so much hate on it from some. Worth knowing. Not using the technique…a bit like playing a round of golf without your drivers.
Such a sick one dude! The videos never disappoint. Looks like such an awesome time with some good browns mixed in with all the whiteys haha. Keep it up!
For your nymphs your fishing on your Euro rig are you just using mayfly imitations or buigger stone fly nymphs or attractor patterns like jig rainbow warriors?
The arguments against euro nymphing are so funny to me. I’d rather use a fly to get down than a split shot.
Tolle Bilder, tolle Fische in schöner Natur .👌👌👏👏👏👏👍

Amazing ! 💯
Fun times!
Love your videos ... still fishing Central Montana?
Always!

Mainly smaller flies like mayflies but I’ll sometimes use one big one like a mop, worm, or leech with a small one below
I really liked this one…so gross how people will just crap and not bury.
Euro nymphers:
*fish where the fish are*
“I hate euronymphing” 😅
"Euro fishing isn't my favorite,...OMG like literally every cast"🤣 Come on man!
great video...what state is this in?
@PhelpsOntheFly, What is the “whitey” that you caught so many of?
Prosopium williamsoni

Euro nymphing is no fly fishing. In Europe there is a fishing technique called tip fishing. Thats whats euro nymphing really is.
Phelps > WildFly. Sorry, Scottie.
Love them both for different reasons.
They both put out great fly fishing visual candy! Thanks Will and Scottie!
