    I’m only a few minutes into the video, but I chose a deaf school for my daughter, and I know I made the right decision, so I’m excited to finish watching this. My husband is deaf and he was mainstreamed and he struggles with language deprivation from it. My daughter is only three years old and it was hard to send her to school so young, but she comes home every day and I know this is what’s best for her. Thank you for this video. I hope it reaches the hearing parents that need to see it.

    oh man what a life is to keep deaf community survival everywhere...... in 80's in my teenage time I played indoor lacrosse hearing team (w/o interpreter in practice and games I was a good player and my coach was nice I taught myself !) away from dorm on deaf school premise for the evening game in the spring year while I attend at hearing HS (off campus) inter mates like about 30 deaf students in Vancouver B.C. I used to play volleyball, basketball, and soccer with deaf school team but no football, so now deaf school was no longer there anymore (brought out) so deaf students moved to with hearing school.
    Great your journey video

      Hi Kelly,
      Are you from Vancouver? I was looking for a deaf community club here, but couldn't find any. Also, I just started learning ASL, but couldn't find any school programs except for the VCC's which is unfortunately full-time. Can you help me with that-finding community and classes?
      Thanks!

    This IS a conundrum! The problem with one or the other is that in a deaf school there's a lot more focus on learning communication skills as well as the academics. There is also more exposure to the deaf culture. The downside can be that it makes it tougher for them to mainstream into society. This is much different than someone with a physical challenge like cerebral palsy, paralysis, loss of vision and so forth. This ability to communicate is our key to socialization. So far as I'm concerned, the most optimal way to fix this is schools that mainstream including the deaf. Unfortunately, this means changes to the schools that many districts can't afford, especially in today's day and time. The other thing is that it's important for hearing kids to be engaged in the deaf community, at least to a certain extent. Perhaps with the electronics and web that we have today we can do more mainstream kids. The bottom line here is that kids dealing with deafness have to have a good mix of deaf learning as well as deaf culture as well as the culture around them. (Not sure that last sentence makes sense.)

    I think there needs to be more Deaf schools in California and some other special programs as well, but sadly I don't see that happening until the state changes some financial priorities around, and changes it's attitude about indoctrinating children. It looks like a good program, but living with family is usually better for kids than boarding school unless the home is bad or the parents won't learn ASL. That being said, parents that keep their Deaf kid at home need to ensure they get the resources and enrichment they need. I'm thinking about this if I become a parent someday. If it turns out someday I have to make it, it would likely be one of the 3 biggest decisions in my life I ever have to make.

    • @signedwithheart
      @signedwithheart  6 лет назад +3

      That's what I think too- if the parents are not making efforts to learn sign language, it would probably be best for the deaf child to go a deaf school- so that the deaf child would have a better chance of succeeding in school and in the hearing world.

      Sean Fortine we had one deaf family from California were shocked when they went to Iowa school for the deaf for events. Their kids fall in love with ISD and hate CSDR because they said it was so lonely there & no events during weekends. California have no money while Iowa have lot of money to support ISD.
      Get rid of elite deaf schools

    • @seanfortine2707
      @seanfortine2707 6 лет назад +1

      I'm not surprised that other states have better programs. California is badly mismanaged and the state is so long and relatively thin that it's hard to provide regional schools that work for all. I live about a half hour drive (assuming traffic is okay) from CSDR so the families I've met where someone went to school there can treat it almost like a local public school, and it works out well for the whole family. But the state's budget mess and geography makes it hard for people that live far away from CSD or CSDR because boarding school kids far from home can spend up to 8 hours on the road one way if traffic is severe. They seem to provide a decent education, especially given the circumstances, but I don't understand how that makes CSD or CSDR elite though.

    • @blazeroranger
      @blazeroranger 6 лет назад +1

      Sean Fortine not really. I’ve met plenty of CSDR alumni and they aren’t that smart. They couldn’t fix the house, cars, to make money and etc because of CSDR education isn’t good at all.
      Because tooooooo many many students at CSDR.
      Kids don’t horseplay? I was kid once and loved to horseplay. I can imagine if I’m in classroom with 30+ students I’ll be fail at CSDR no questions.
      Plus CSDR don’t have much of money to spending so reduce on education from any field trips.
      Fact is fact.
      Real world is all about MONEY and livings. Repair anything yourself than depend someone to repair it for you then your money fly away.
      I’m glad that I graduated from ISD, not a elite deaf school. If I went to elite deaf school I wouldn’t own my 800 HP Syclone, own a business, under the roof, and etc.

    • @blazeroranger
      @blazeroranger 6 лет назад +1

      Sean Fortine I labeled any deaf schools with too many students as elite deaf schools. I went to several elite deaf schools as visiting. Know what they do to us? “Come on moving here and you will love big and strong deaf school blah blah”
      We never plan to moving, just visiting.
      So they all baiting weakness deaf families to moving there & steal our students even another deaf schools’ students.
      ISD lost about 25 students to Indiana SD, Maryland SD, TSD and CSD R/F.
      They won’t stop and will keep baiting deaf families from another states.

    • @signedwithheart
      @signedwithheart  6 лет назад +3

      Very few parents chose to homeschool their deaf child. Like any other option, there are pros and cons to homeschooling a deaf child…. it’s a parent’s decision to make for their deaf child. If they chose to homeschool their deaf child, then I encourage them to get involved and stay active in the Deaf community as I think it’s really important for deaf kids to be around other deaf kids. I can’t imagine growing up being the only deaf kid… it’s nice to have deaf friends too.

      It's tough. We have two deaf kids and we chose to move to be closer to a deaf school for them. The issue with home schooling is being fluent enough in ASL yourself. Remember: they need language to learn. So if you homeschool a deaf child, they need to learn language from you before you can teach them anything else.
      Right now, our kids are being taught ASL at school, and we're just trying to keep ahead of them (they're in kindergarten and grade 1 right now). For us, it would be a huge struggle to homeschool them (especially since we have two older kids who are hearing).

    I am Deaf but um, growing up HOH and for the HOH... it is not good for HOH to go to Deaf schools or even residential schools for the Deaf because of the challenges of course work. When I was at a Deaf residential school, of course there were many huge negatives I experienced because away from home, and lack of education level I should fit in. With my high IQ, it was boring. Then I went to public mainstreaming with other Deaf. Again, the only negative was with those same Deaf who caused trouble made against me. To be honest, I am more "hearing" and today in my 50s, I am still "hearing". I wanted a public school in my district but instead was forced to go to the area school where they have Deaf program. I lost more hearing in 2004 but I am still "hearing" in ways of life.
    I feel in my opinion, again, MY opinion, mainstreaming is best way to go for because Deaf schools lack other courses of interests for students to experience. When I mainstreamed in high school, they had courses I can experience and used my talents in. The Deaf school I found out did NOT have courses I needed. So, you have to also think about what best for your child. Because today's world is still Hearing and still tough to get into for employment as well as college. I compared my 2 classes that graduated. ALL of us in mainstreamed went to college and got degrees. Those in my former class at Deaf school. only ONE has a degree and others got certificate or went to work. So, you got to weight which can really help in education so I kind of disagree with Warren Keller that Deaf school gives better education. Not true. Teachers in Deaf schools tend to "Aww, poor Deaf child can't do the work, I will give him/her an A+ " I actually talked with teachers at the time I was there admitted to me that. Not kidding! So, again, MY opinion.

    • @ZenekandSashasHearing

      It depends on the school and how they teach. The deaf schools here in Ontario, Canada are fantastic. Class sizes are tiny (5 students per teacher in the lower grades, and 8 in high school). They're always trying to teach life skills, not just academics. Our two kids are in kindergarten and grade 1 and they go on field trips every week - sometimes just to the mall so they can learn the language around everyday things. I was chatting with one of the teachers who used to teach grade 8 and he said he once took his class on a field trip to the dump, because the students didn't know what a dump was! That's what I mean: life skills that you actually need to go about life after school.
      Everything is taught in ASL, but they are taught to read and write English. And that's the foundation: who cares if you can speak, but if you can read English, you can learn anything.
      We tried kindergarten in a mainstream school for our son, and even with accommodations, we saw pretty quickly that he was just falling further behind, which is why we put him in a deaf school.

    Cool video ever I seen but need more Deaf schools??? No need because Deaf world is small so are the Deaf communities - it is more fun and challenging this way for Deaf children to go out from their comfort zone if you'll say and be more self-reliance without any possibilities of "dependency" and Hearing parents often threw their Deaf children through panic mode if you'll agree, to mainstream school or worst of all, oral school which often stiff their growth like language acquisition in classroom without sign language that it needs to be stopped because of AGBell philosophy on how to raise their Deaf children to suit to their parents' comfort zone like speaking and listening, my goodness you know, right, why they struggle while parent don't? Is that fair to their Deaf children to be inclusive with their Hearing parents through "sloppy or broken English" if you'll agree BUT I speak from the life experience as a Deaf child reared up by parent, one was Hearing and the other is Deaf, well not all went through the same but feel similarities they may say or have. I can collaborate lot of things wrong with this place where we call a home which is America but what Warren Keller said that "it is coming" after interviewed with this awesome reporter on its future in front of dark mirror, the light just dawn not long ago. I think Deaf Grassroot Movement caused the big controversies of any kind of struggles throughout this country that we Deaf people face in America, quite a hard impact on Hearing societies out there often are being bombarded negatives from Deaf communities on many things like accessibility, job and way of life with the hope we have for them Hearings to open their minds to its necessities of developments that helps and enriches the lives of Deaf children at Deaf schools instead of Mainstream, why do Hearing parents gamble with their Deaf Children's lives on success? Truth is that Hearing parents unknowingly set them up for failure, only few got out of the way and live on their own without dependency on parents for help. So that is where and how we Deaf see for our Deaf people especially children, we prepare them in right way like a common "vision", hopefully close enough to be "Deafopia" and ha ha ha, that is far-stretched BUT it can happen ONE DAY! The world will get to see what it is like inside Deafopia where the people both Hearing and Deaf live co-exist with ASL they use daily - like cops sign, firemen, doctors and managers of buildings such as restaurant, movie and hospital, point is everybody sign, of course with a heart like this reporter. Speaking of adding more Deaf Institutes in America, no and it is already established since late 1800's I believe. Most of Deaf institutes oftentimes in America were cut by the Hearings who control everything through suppression when it comes to money and how it was spent and where did the money go to..etc, etc. NOW it is a great time to ask the politicians at the White House and Congress also the governors of each state in America to start making the time to put in more money to cover the Deaf schools in America so let the Deaf Children decide where to attend which Deaf schools they want to enroll and be vital part of the Deaf communities, you know what the word means, annex? Why not let the Deaf children annex their own lives to preferred Deaf school like Model Secondary School for the Deaf in Washington; D.C. on the campus of Gallaudet University or Texas School for the Deaf in Austin or California School for the Deaf in Fremont or Berkeley so on and on. Just keep those "aged" Deaf Institutes in operation because of Deaf Generations attended Deaf Schools in the past, ask the Congress to put in some more funds to cover like restoration of the buildings, upgrade the system, more diverse on education and hire Deaf and Hearing teachers who use ASL to make big differences in their lives being inclusive in all.

    Ashley Clark got slammed harder by Warren Keller after gave him her biased opinions about going to the deaf school will be less achievement than going to the mainstream school. Then she immediately changed her opinion and wished there was a deaf school where she can go. Her opinions have never changed since 2006 but glad that Mr. Keller slapped her with a few true statements so she can stop thinking the deaf school negatively.
    I have a question: do you finally realize that the praying will not heal deaf people's abilities to hear? I know that Rhema Bible Training College's doctrine is truly terrible and obviously, a false teaching.
    Ashley, I am really glad that you have decided to step out and asked questions about the deaf school. I hope you will finally have a better perspective toward the deaf education and deaf culture. Your thoughts/attitude toward the deaf school in the past was the reason why many deaf schools are closed because of those "ignorant" people who do not know the true facts.
    Good job, Ashley! Looking forward to seeing your new perspective toward the deaf community, culture, and school.
