This song tells the story of a young man who cannot sleep for his desire of a woman who is married to an old man.
The historical Spanish version in the Cancionero de Palacio, set to music by Juan del Encina, contains only the first four lines of the account, while in the Sephardic version from Tetouan (Morocco) the entire story has been preserved. The two versions are basically different in melody and structure, but exhibit several corresponding melodic elements.

There's actually TWO types of Sephardic Jewish music: One is the much, much more Westernised [or European (Spanish and/or Portuguese) in style] of Jewish music, and the other one is the Andalusian/Moroccan/Algerian Arab-influenced style, which has much more in common with Mazrahi Jewish music (Jewish music that originates on the Asian continent) rather than the more European Sephardic style or even Klezmer Jewish music from Central, Northeastern and Eastern Europe (excluding most of the Balkans)

Inspiration for writing my vampire/ghost-story novel...considered for inclusion -- suggested by collaborator and actor Rodrigo Garcia Olza of Barcelona, Spain -- to complement my current musical selections thus far...Since the story of the vampire is passed down through folklore (with medieval roots), this upbeat music with folkloric origins is appropriate -- even for a modern-day take on vampire lore. Also, the music reflects one who cannot sleep because of desire -- which is on target for a vampire-related story...

+Bruno Aloi hola, los arabes cuando han entrado a la Peninsula o cualquier pais, no matan, no torturan sino pacificaron la Peninsula y cambiaron la situacion y la organizacion social que fue muy terrible (puedes buscar en los antiguos libros como lo de Pierre Guichard, Américo Castro, Dozy....) te va encontrar que los musulmanes aliviaron la autoridad de la Iglesia (y todos sabemos que la Iglesia en la era medieval, ha cambiado totalmente la verdad religiosa y se ha mantenido la autoridad segun sus intereses, puede tambien buscar sobre el rol de la Iglesia en la edad media). yo no estoy atacando la religion o algo asi, sino que estoy dando la diferencia entre las guerras cruzadas hechas por los cristianos en tierras arabes y las expansiones islamicas en las tierras cristianas. otra cosa muy importante los arabes cuando entraron a la peninsula Ibérica o cualquier otra tierra, permitieron a la gente practicar su religion (tanto el cristiano sigue ser cristiano, como el judio se queda judio) nunca te confirmo que nunca hemos forzado alguien a abrazar el Islam solo lo que quiere entrar se puede. te añado otra cosa que en nuestra religion hay "la gente del libre": es decir los cristianos y judios, se trataban de manera especial aqui te doy lo que nuestro Profeta -Dios lo bendiga y salve- nos aconseja:
""Quien es cruel y duro con una minoría no-musulmana, restringiendo sus derechos, cargando a estas gentes con más de lo que pueden soportar, o tomando cualquier cosa de ellos en contra de su voluntad, yo [el Profeta Muhammad] reclamaré en contra de esa persona el Día del Juicio".
esto existe en nuestra religion haber si exite algo sobre respetar un musulman en una comunidad cristiana.

The lines are: Ea judios a enfardelar que mandan los reyes que passeys la mar.
Translation: "Hey, Jews, get packed because the monarchs (=los reyes catolicos, king Fernando and queen Isabel) command that you cross the sea." This is a reference to the 1492 expulsion of the Jews who would not convert to Christianity by the Catholic monarchs. The song itself is about adultery, as the neighbour desires the young wife of the old man, whom the young wife wants to burn up in a furnace. This is a common theme in the Spanish romances and was used in the Sephardi song repertoire as well. There are many varied motifs and stories in the Sephardi songs and do not always deal with the Sephardi culture per se.
