    The more i played rdr2 the more its flaws came through.
    I was lucky to have played it when i had basically nothing else in my life. But now it just seems like too much to do another playthrough. I have too many other obligations.
    RDR2 feels like a show you can't just rewatch a single episode of, you have to watch through it beginning to end. While thats not bad, its understandable why so many can only do that once. Its not a "lol youre a dumb fortnite kid" scenario, not everyone has the time or mental energy.

  • @TheMightyBill
    @TheMightyBill 21 день назад +1

    There's a reason the most popular games (league of legends, fortnite, gta) e.t.c are just very frequent dopamine hits to the brain that becomes addictive, like playing a slot machine for a gambling addict. Getting out of that cycle as an adult is quite difficult, I have to turn off my other monitors and turn off the internet so no discord or anything distracting me.
    These long story games like god of war/starwars/red dead/resident evil 2 remake e.t.c I have to play at night with the main room light off + colored lighting behind the monitor to increase the mood based on the game I'm playing AND be in the RIGHT mood for the RIGHT game.
    Also if you've studied or done a days work you will have more appreciation for the game rather to just waking up and playing straight away I find.
    I have The Witcher 3 in my library and think I will just have the same experience you are having in that it's going to be slow paced and difficult to appreciate it like you're in the game yourself. This never used to be a problem as a kid with things like metal gear solid/final fantasies/tomb raider. The brain has got used to these dopamine hits of shooting someone every 5-10 seconds in counter strike or whatever drug game we all play is. Path of exile spamming 2 buttons round maps for 4-8 hours a day sound familiar? Try playing a 40-50 hour story game after that. Not easy.

While playing the game i usually have to think a couple of seconds what button i have to press to do a certain action, they do not make sense. Actually that was my biggest problem with the game, i just could not get used to them. I plan to install the game again in near future and finish it because i like these sort of games.

    Same thing happened to me with RDR 2, but I started liking it. I had to wait through that whole beginning cutscene and walk through the snow at the pace of a snail only to start the game. After that, the first chapter felt so slow and boring. Just walk through the snow with your horse, go hunting, walk through the snow some more, murder some guys...
    I went through it the 4th time I decided to give this game a chance. After finishing the 1st chapter and getting to the second one, i really started enjoying it. I feel like a real cowboy. I can tie people up, kidnap them, tie them up and pull them after me while i ride the horse...

    I'm not sure what you thought this game was when you started playing it. This is an open world Cowboy simulator. This game isn't about moving things at a breakneck pace. You're supposed to slow down and just immerse yourself in the world. You can watch someone eat an entire plate of food in real time. You can follow a rabbit all the way up until it gets picked off by a hawk that had been circling around it the whole time. This entire game is supposed to take you into the world. It just so happens that when you emulate the world to that degree it has to have a lot of downtime. If that's not the type of game you want to play then this just isn't the game for you.

    The most recent one for me was Dragon’s Dogma (the first one, not the new one). I played it for about 20-ish hours back March/April of last year. I’d had the game on my wishlist for about four years, since 2019, and I was constantly being told how it’s “the best action RPG ever”, that it had one of the best combat systems in gaming. I even remember hearing Shadiversity on RUclips claim that DD’s combat was better than Dark Souls, a series which I’d just played the year prior, in 2018, and had quickly become some of my favorite games of all time.
    To summarize my experience: Dragon’s Dogma has one of the most bland and empty open worlds I have ever seen in a video game. Whatever interesting content the game supposedly has, whether that be the giant monsters or the ‘cool spells’, I saw very little of in those 20 hours of playtime. Most of my time was spent walking through the same portions of the map repeatedly, fighting the same non-threatening wolf packs and goblin parties (which have fixed spawn locations, meaning they’ll always show up in the same places every time), following the quest objectives.
    I eventually came to notice how every location I found on my own would, at some point, become the site of a quest line. Which led me to a theory: I don’t think there are any optional areas in the world that you’re meant to discover on your own. If you just follow every quest you’re given in the main hub town, it feels like you might end up seeing most or even all of the world by the end. So, it’s an open world game where exploration is largely pointless, especially when the best moments seem to be triggered by story-related events.
    After watching some more videos and discussions after I quit playing, the consensus seemed to be that it’s one of those, “It gets good after X hours,” type of gmaes. And I’m just not in the business of doing that. If I was at least having some fun during that time, I might’ve considered continuing with it, but frankly it was just dull, because hardly anything exciting or intriguing was happening. Most of the game is walking to the next destination, and stuff only happens _at_ the destinations.
    I’m also shocked by the reviews I’ve heard regarding the sequel, Dragon’s Dogma 2, because it sounds like a lot of these design choices are still there, to some degree. I heard that low-level enemies still have fixed spawn points, there’s apparently still not a _ton_ of locations off the main path, though perhaps more than the first entry. I was told that the reason DD1 was like this was due to the game running out of its budget and Capcom shoving it out the door while it was only like 40% of a complete game. So why on earth would these problems still plague a sequel, 12 years later?

    • @criticalpixels
      @criticalpixels  23 дня назад

      I'm not a fan of the "it gets good after X hours" either, especially if the "X" is something like 5 or 10 hours. I know some games demand more handholding at the beginning, but it should at least be interesting.
