@@sweetradishgaming Understandable! If you're not planning on playing the game straight away it seems like a gamble to purchase it hoping it will still play when you get around it. I'd imagine you'd get many years without worry but one day those servers will be gone. It's happening presently with the 360! Difference is the full games reside on those disks. 😁👍

I had a chance to watch this video a few days back at work and wanted to let you know I found this discussion very interesting. Really cool that you have found a place in the hobby where you are happy with what you have and what you enjoy playing and collecting. I have thought about my collection more and more over the past year and how large it is. Ever growing really. 😂 And have been on the fence with downsizing certain aspects of it. I have asked myself do I need this? And even though I want to play every game I have, the question is time. I could live multiple lifetimes and never get the time to play them all. Not to mention the financial side of collecting. Do I really need to spend a lot for a game I may not play much? Should I continue to pursue collecting the full sets I have been after? How much is enough? What happens to all of this when I leave? I know it will be a burden to my family unloading it so…all valid questions really. In the end I guess we all need to find the place where you are when it comes to the hobby. Pacmancase did a video last year about the phases of game collecting and he touched on this topic in a similar way. Very good video discussion my friend. Hope you and the family are doing well. 🤙🏻

I appreciate you taking the time to watch. Thanks heaps for taking the time to publish the thoughtful comment!
Glad you found it of interest. These are all questions that I've asked myself over the years as well. It's incredibly fun to collect. So much so that there were times it became a burden to our family. Not in a major way, but when moving houses and trying to store and transport these physical items.
I thought my kids would be a lot more interested in them than they are. That has been a catalyst in my change of heart with some of the items I collected. Here were a bunch of classic cartridges that I had pictured meaning more to my family than they did. As I realised this I stopped collecting those items entirely and refocussed the game room to make sure it reflected what I want our game room to be - a family hangout, an oddity for guests to explore, and a relaxing and usable area. I still have a lot of sorting, selling and reorganising to get it to it's maximum potential but I a have a clear vision of how I want it all.
I see a lot of videos about people selling up most/all of their collections. That is certainly not what I'm doing! In fact, very little has been sold. My journey in video game collecting has found a very nice pinacle and I'm loving the fact that we are enjoying the fruits of the labour.
In saying all this if I had a bigger budget and a bigger space I would be hunting down a pinball machine or two! 😁👍

I'm pretty much in the same boat. My game collection is coming to an end. I have also been aware for several years that PS4, PS5 and Xbox one, etc..is not as future proof as previous generations. If Sony or Microsoft decides within 20 years not to allow old games to be started anymore, you will be left with a large collection of coasters. That is why I think I will sell that part of my collection within 15 years. Only the Switch is an exception because I don't think you need an online connection to start the games. Then there is at least 1 console worth collecting for.

    • @TheGameroomAwakens
      @TheGameroomAwakens  Месяц назад +1

@@maximusroyalstar9084 Yeah it's a worry! I've only kept games from the new era that are low value or that I haven't got around to yet. Once played I usually sell them off too. Yes! I forgot to mention the Switch as I don't buy anything for that system but you're absolutely correct. It's doing the heavy lifting in the collector's space. The biggest worry about the switch collector's space would have to be the longevity of the consoles themselves. They seem quite prone to damage sounds the connectors and those silly little controllers (that admittedly I have a soft spot for).

Do you already have the record player? There are (in my lowly opinion) great cheap options of record players with pre-amps out there that remove the need of a hefty setup. I use an Audio Technica LP60 that's connected to a stereo/CD player combo. I was lucky enough to find an audio mixer cheap but was quite happy with the stereo presets before getting that. Small footprint and pretty cheap setup considering I bought both the turntable and stereo second-hand.

As I get older I question what all is going to happen to all of my "stuff" once I peel off from this coil. Honestly, I rather not leave my loved ones with junk to sort through and get rid off if not outright throw out. At the end of the day it is all so easy to replace with a retro handheld and what not that takes up infinitely less space. Plus a happy home can be found for all the stuff by folk who would appreciate having it a lot more than myself at this point in time. Also time, I rather spend my time filling with other things to do. I had my time with these growing up and I can revisit a lot of this more conveniently without having to set up the old hardware and fumble with wires and controllers and what not. But to everyone really, you do you. It is a hobby and as long as you love it, enjoy it.

Cool that you've got your collecting in check! It can be hard to have an end in sight.
You're bang-on about the ease of emulation. My hopes are that I can continually replace my current consoles in my collection with simplistic emulation devices and continually cull my physical pieces.
In saying all this I currently have second-hand collections of music and movies that are growing 😮. Old habits die hard! 😂

Glad to see a video from you again. I've always been a targeted collector myself. I feel it reflects in my collection as well. I've always been a original hardware guy so the emulation and mini consoles have never really appealed to me in much of a way other than just neat officially licensed pieces of kit. With that said, most of my systems I have flash carts or optical drive emulators so I can play any of the games on original hardware. I still collect physical games but, it has helped me stay focused on not just idly buying games for the sake of it or going out and buying a game I saw on a youtube video becasue it looks cool only to find out it's not my cup of tea. It's also has kept me in check with being paitent on games I do phyically want to buy and I've saved quite a bit finding games the old fanshioned way; from the thrift or garage sale that I otherwise would have paid high markup on. I would say for myself I'm mostly done. There are a few stragglers out there that I eventually would like to get but it's a waiting game. Heck I may never get them and I'm okay with that. I still get to experience them with my systems setup. Hope you have a great rest of your week!

      Thanks for the thoughtful comment!
Yeah, I understand the appeal of getting the real-deal with original hardware and software. For me personally I started my collection with emulation in mind and then strayed. I only wanted original games that couldn't be emulated very well/easily but somehow got sucked into buying many more NES, SNES, and Game Boy carts than I intended on owning.
You've done well to find quality stuff at garage sales and thrift stores! I used to find quite a bit through those means as well although would sell them on to buy pieces I really wanted as usually they were family/kids games. Definitely got lucky now and then although these days I don't do garage sales due to the time commitment and the fact that it's a weekend experience when I'm preocupied.
Very cool to hear that you have enough to keep you satisfied as well! It's a pretty blissful place to be.

You have a wonderful perspective on this, and one that i wish others had as well. I got out of modern gaming when the download of patches became necessary to play a new game.. I said right then, "I'm done!"
I still pick up vintage stuff, but that is very occasionally, as i collect on a budget. $20 per month is all i have to spend, so if i can't get it for cheap, then i don't want it. I can justify buying a game that i won't play, just to have it.. but i can't think of anytime that i have done that! 😅 I play my games AS MUCH as i can, with kids that's not much.. 😂
So I've kind of pivoted to collecting games that they can play and enjoy.
I'm also trying to whittle down what i have, i still need to find good homes for a few hundred disc based games! It's laughable to me that some people pay money for these, as i can't even give them away! 😂

      Thanks heaps!
As much as i love the classics I'm a massive fan of modern gaming! I know these days there is a lot of hate when modern gaming is mentioned but I find it all relative. I really love how technically brilliant games have become and can totally understand the need to refine the experience after sale due to how intricate games have become. I also find it very frustrating sitting down to play a game I've been excited to start, only to find I can't play for the night due to a massive download that is not merely suggested, but essential. I also dislike the huge difference between a second-hand physical game's price to that of a digital copy. I'd buy a lot more digital copies if the price drops over time were more significant!
Yep, I too find it a real challenge to get in some gaming time. I often feel too guilty to play anything solo when the kids are still awake which is a huge reason I've been purchasing $1 DVDs from the op shops to watch together. I've been loving that!
Yeah, selling is a struggle! hard to find the time and motivation. I'll be happy once I've sold off the rest of my NES, SNES and Game Boy games. That will leave me with a nice collection of N64, GameCube, Wii and Wii U, PS2 light gun games, XBOX, XBOX 360. That's all I want! Possibly sell off a few of those titles too.

Vectrex was my “system of birth”. Foundational memories of Dad playing by the glow of its light when I was very young. He sold it to buy my NES, then sold the NES (the only one in the neighbourhood that worked without blowing) to buy the SNES. The loss of those treasures are what spurred my collecting!
