Slowing down the exchanges as the hit happens is a great idea and I wish others did it more. It really helps those of us who are beginners (like me) or uninitiated.
Great to hear you're finding it useful!
I find these videos so enthralling, and I don't even practice swordsmanship. Thanks a million!
Also nice editing.
Thanks, glad to hear it!
I find myself very fond of my English baskethilted backsword so seeing this was very interesting. Thanks!
Glad you liked it, cheers!
Love the slow motion to highlight hit. Please do more of this. Great sparring both of you 💪
Thanks a lot, glad you like it! I will always do more of these :)
two handed sword vs one handed sword ←cool
Really great content. Loving your channel a lot, hope you could upload more frequently! :)
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoy the channel!
I'd love to but since this is a hobby, there are going to be phases with more frequent uploads as well as periods with fewer in between :)
Cheers!
Excellent video, I am greatly enjoying the mixed weapon sparring. I am new to HEMA, been only practicing for about a year but I have noticed a few things when it comes with longsword fighting which I also observed in this video. I noticed that when the broadsword started to attack, the longsword went for an immediate attack instead of a block resulting in a few doubles. Is this due to the longsword trying to keep out of measure just enough to be safe while also getting in an attack?
Thank you for the video and I have been enjoying watching your posts and learning a lot. Appreciate it!
As the guy with the longsword: I am used to a somewhat longer longsword/feder so I often thought that I was out of measure even though I wasnt. But often it was also just bad timing on my part.
Hi Andrew, thanks! I'm glad you like the channel. I'll try to give a simplified answer to your question:
Your observation is correct. The specific reason for what you're seeing is that the longsword system(s) we practise are a lot older than the later military fencing traditions, about 350 years apart.
German longsword fencing has a different approach to the fight - the fencer seeks to cut into a cut or thrust in order to protect themselves and regain the initiative/strike the opponent in one action.
In contrast, the broadsword/sabre system that I am using here (Roworth/Angelo ~1800) is a parry-riposte system, which teaches the parry and the follow-up attack as two distinct actions/tempi.
So we have two different approaches to the fight here, which is why it often ends up that way.
@@Vatoeter Thank you for your insight! I think I was on the right track on my thinking of your strategy. I appreciate your feedback and thank you for demonstrating the techniques.
@@historyandsabre Appreciate your time on explaining more details, I am starting to piece things together a bit. Thanks again for showing the techniques, learning a lot!
many longsword techniques involve attacking while being attacked. like a rock paper scissor game sorta. Some movements put you in a defensive position by virtue of the attack. Ochs counters vamtag under most circumstance. etc
Will you review the regimental baskethilt broadsword?
I could, though we have an earlier version with some issues that have been resolved already.
Matt Easton has a review for it
@@bockskarr6626 of the black fencer synthetic?
@@historyandsabre I just don't find any good reviews of it
Where do u get your protective gear
Various companies & webshops (Europe): SPES, PBT, Black Armoury, The HEMA shop, etc, etc.
Thanks
Im starting to struggle to understand why longswords went out of fashion
Several reasons probably: necessity, practicality, size/weight, fashion etc.
