finally a good video that ACTUALLY EXPLAINS the main point, most youtubers just trail off to saying stuff that birds arent for everybody(which btw isnt true)

I have very particular individual. He is already used to me. He already recalls and lands on me no problem, no problem stepping up either. He even started learning few tricks. But he wont let me scratch him on his head. He eventually will warm up to this. For now my other cockatiel is way too cuddly so she makes up for 2.
Im currently doing tricks that involve him touching his head against my fingers (going for treat thats on my palm while my fingers make O shape). Many ppl expect way too much way too quickly, this fella didnt want to be anywhere close to me for 2 months and one day just randomly hopped on my hand to eat some treats. Parrots are funny creatures
That’s a perfect way of training your bird to accept scritches! Your are doing an awesome job! 💙
My boy won't accept scritches, he doesn't like my hand being over his head for some reason!
With my bird I used my nose to scratch his head and slowly added my fingers for head scritches and it worked for me! :)

My bird loves sitting in the same room while I do my quiet crafts, be sure that whatever medium you craft with is not dangerous or has any fumes (glues, resins, polymer clay and paints has fumes), if you knit or crochet or do fiber crafts this one can be a very good since many fiber crafts get us in a really calm zone and they can pick it up as well. Make sure however the fibers and the yarn are not potentially getting near the bird’s body because fibers can be tangled and breathed, just do this in proximity from your bird. Very hands off bonding.
Yes ours like to relax when we are doing quiet hobbies! They also love to watch us play video games 😂

Yes! I am planning on getting a new baby bird in the future, and I this was super helpful!
My baby cockatiel was very trusting of me when I got him, he was clipped before I got him😭 so he would fly around in high places, he was very aware and always looking around (like a healthy birdie) after the first day he chilled out and I worked with him to step up a little better.

Do cockatiels lay on their back? Can't wait to whatch this even tho my cockatiel is already bonded to me (≧▽≦)
You can teach them to lay on their back if they trust you
Most won't feel comfortable doing do but you'll get the occasional tiel who will! With training you can achieve this but it tends to be more common in South American species!

You're very kind your love to help of of your kiddos shines through the tv. I'm trying to be patient., I don't know what to do my green cheek is 8 months old and likes to pick on the 1 year old sun conure 🤷🏼♀️..sun conure is laid back but green cheek is super greedy 😆. They're both boys and I've only had them about 2 months.and the older one sun conure YOSHI won't even really let me touch him ...😢 the green cheek POPS let's me pet his head and put him back in his cage when it's time to go in. If you have time.maybe you could throw a few hints? Thank you ❤

Hi Sophie, when you do all these tips with your bird when is it a good time to try and have your bird to go on your hand, like when will they be comfortable to go on your hand when you reach out to them
Hey! If a bird is readily taking treats from you with little hesitation, then you can try having them step up!
This rlly helped! Also, where can i get good bird things like cages, perches etc? My cage is too small and the perch is bad for they're feet, i cant find any toys too! Do you know a online shop for things like this?

So I have a cockatiel (parrot) who was my wife’s grandmothers bird who passed away. As far as she can remember she has had Romeo so she believes he is fairly old. When I got him he was in a med cage and only is use to eating millet or like parakeet seed. I have tried some fruits and veggies, other bigger seeds and he has nothing to do with it. He won’t let me get close to him only to change food or water that’s it. He wants me around but doesn’t want to get love at all. Please help

It’s often a sign of stress or anticipation!
Can you do one for birds that were never tamed because were I’m from tamed birds are 12 times more expensive than tamed birds and also the are uncommon
All of these tips will still apply to untamed birds!

@@mahmoud7215 will you bird take treats through the bars from you? You an also place your flat hand in the cage with treats on it and be very still and let them come to you!
@@BirdNerdSophie yes I actually Feed him through the bars sometimes but He only comes to my hands when it’s in the cage when he’s hungry and still didn’t eat in the morning
Hi Sophie, my green cheek conures cling to me as soon as I step through the door. My problem is that when I sit on the sofa, the male bird starts walking up and down my thigh, passionately biting my trousers and my skin underneath. The same goes for my sleeves. Do you have any idea how to make him stop, because it really hurts and I am not willing to accept this on the long run. Thank you very much for your advice.
Do they have a playstand they could be on instead? If you give them lots of treats, or even meals on the playstand, they will find it a very reinforcing place to be! You can also use a perch to get him to step up on off of you when he's biting!

My cockatiel was a breeder. He has come a very long way in the last 2 yrs. He loves his tablet. He scrolls on it and picks what he wants. To watch. He only come to my hand only if my hand is covered, unless he lands on floor and can’t find his latter right away, then I can have him step up on my bare hand. Any suggestions on getting him to be not so afraid of everything. He is out all day and goes in and out all day . I bought another cockatiel baby and he is out all day now and coms to me constantly. Is there anything more I can help my breeder bird to feel more safe and not be afraid?
Introducing him to new things at a distance regularly can help to reduce fear!
Plus having some structured in cage time every day is very healthy for pet birds in encouraging independence 😊

I just adopted my Cockatiel a few days ago he’s VERY skittish I’ve had other birds never as scared he also is young but just standing near him scares him I’m willing to take the time it’s worth it but I’m not sure how to start if he’s scared when I’m just by his cage

I'm thinking about getting a cockatiel, I'm fairly sure it is a female. Does the taming methods change at all with a female? I know they tend to be shyer and more quiet, but does anything change bonding wise?

What about the negative reinforcement? Isn't it as important as the positive for all animals? How would they know they're doing something bad if you don't let them know? Like humans, other animals need to feel frustration to know where limits are... I'd like to know your take on these 😊
Negative reinforcement isn’t a bad thing - its taking something away to increase the likelihood of a behaviour, for example if they are scared of you, but then show signs of calm, you move yourself away. This reinforces the calm behaviour by the scary human moving away!
So I have two cockatiel’s the store owner grabbed them into another cage will they ever trust me?(he did not use gloves just used his hands) and also if I want to spray them with something to kill mites how do I do it if they aren’t tamed?I don’t want to scare them while doing it
They definitely have the potential to trust you! It might just take longer as long as you’re willing to put the training in 😊

@@spinobolt7322 If it’s a one off treatment, then you’d be better off catching them up in a towel (look how to do this on RUclips as you can’t put any pressure on their chests) and just get it over and done with, then start working on trust.
If you aren’t confident doing it, I’d recommend going to the vets to get it done, so they would be restraining your birds instead of you doing it!

I've just got a lovely 7 month old cockatiel, not hand tame. I've had her a week now, she's still not super trusting of me, but seems to be quite eager to leave the cage (probably to get away from me 🤣) when should I let her out? I don't want to let her out and she gets hurt frantically flapping about the house. Thanks 😊
If she won’t willingly come on to your hand or on to a perch, then I would be very cautious about getting her out, as you’ll have the struggle of getting her back in again which might end up with you having to towel her which will take away any trust you had to start with! I can send you a link with tips on training the step up in the cage if you like?

If he is afraid then you run the risk of his flying out and struggling to go back in!

I’m afraid I’ve lost my Pete’s trust by putting my hand on his back to get him into his cage. He absolutely refuses to go in on his own even with treats. Tonight he would not even step up on my hand. I am heartbroken 😢. He was so good until a few weeks ago. I’ve done everything David has advised for a hormonal bird but he has not responded at all. I’m afraid to let Pete out because I can’t get him to go in. We are still doing target training but he refused to come to me even with a treat. I do try to sit with him for a half hour or more a few times a day. I need to add that I have two dogs. They are kept out of the bird room but I must divide my time between all animals. I don’t know how to proceed from here. Can you offer any suggestions please?
Try a day of keeping him in the cage and doing target training through the bars - you can use target training to get him back in the cage! Have you seen David’s video about getting your bird back in the cage? Lots of good tips in there 😊
I have seen David’s video and tried his suggestions. Unfortunately when Pete saw my hand coming he flew away immediately. I’ll try the targeting through the cage now. Thank you.
My female is so sweet, but she loves her home...that is good but she always wants to stay there. If I get her out she always flies back and running her cage. I take her around the house, but she goes back..I couldn't stop laughing because I saw her go in her cage, and was trying to close the door by herself. 🤷
What i find amusing is that most birds want to get out of their cage....mind wants to stay in.

But Miss Sophie dogs are like that as well when they first come into a new home. They have to build a bond with their human families just like birds, just like cats, just like ferrets, just like horses etc. I do enjoy listening and watching your videos. I don’t mean the above as criticism I’m just simply making a point based on my Personal experience being with several different types of animal companions
I agree with you - all animals need to build a bond with humans when they come home and it can take time!
