@sewagii at the end of the movie this quote by Victor Hugo is displayed "My friends, remember this, that there are no weeds, and no worthless men, there are only bad farmers" so yeah I think it inspired the movie you have to watch to understand
@sewagii Yes, the whole movie is totally based on Victor Hugo's Book Les Misérables, except it's an adaptation of Hugo's tale, which took place in 19th Century Paris, some 150 years later in our contemporary society, and in a very specific underworld of our society which is a typical suburban guetto in France, controlled by various mafias or gangs. It's a striking portrait of these French ghettos. I just saw the movie, and I highly recommend it.
It's named that way because the city where the movie is taking place ( also where the director grew up) is where Victor Hugo wrote les Misérables, and weirdly not much seems to have fondamentally changed ever since (at least I think that's what Ladj Ly wanted to show). People keep complaining that the name is misleading and that they should've changed it, but I honestly think that the movie fits much more Victor Hugo's vision and social activism than a few Hollywood movies ever did. The title is perfect.

People need to seriously reflect upon their conception of freedom. Freedom without regulation is the greatest source of chaos and inequality.. Efforts from both the people and the government are needed to overcome such crisis.
To compare a police force to a bunch of teenagers is a stretch. Especially when the only social issues the kids were comminitting were minor crimes, such as stealing and looting. The movie did not depict one moment where the kids committed violent crimes until what happened to Issa. In my opinion, the over-policing, the fact that they were constantly stopped and frisked and harassed by the police, treated like criminals before any proof that they committed a crime, is what took them over the edge. it's not like the kids were commenting crimes for no reason. In fact, they are NOT the DEMOGRAPHIC that commits a crime with no reason. The root cause of all the minor crimes they committed is poverty and over-policing does not solve poverty, it actually continues the cycle. Now that being said, the police IS the PROBLEM. They're ones getting PAID to "protect and serve". Yet they have no accountability when they commit crimes when they harass and brutalize a bunch of teenagers for no reason. they get away with it over and over. That's why people are only commenting about the police brutality because the police are paid adults who take advantage of their badge.

it is a film about a French suburban town of Clichy-sous-Bois and Montfermeil, whose inhabitants who live on a miserable life what you see are the favelas in Europe.
In Russia and in a lot of other seemingly democratic countries such videos, not only from drones, but with tortures and killings come out all the time, and nothing changes in the system. Even the guilty policemen do not serve their terms or even stay at their position. Last week one of those hit a 6 y old kid by a car and killed him. Police told that the kid was drunk and the policeman is innocent. And that is happening every week, actually every day. So this movie doesn't raise the stakes for me...
I'm Russian too. Such videos don't come out "all the time" in Russia, you're exaggerating. But of course police brutality takes place in Russia, as in any other capitalist country. In the USSR the militia never carried any weapons at all (yeah yeah half the country was sitting in a gulag I know, evil commissars were scaring everybody into submission yeah yeah). Today's policeman look like they're in a war zone. They are the bulldogs of an anti-people regime. So it's no point saying "things are way worse in Russia, so this movie doesn't raise any stakes blabla" it's a lie. This movie is still shocking. Point is, things are *the same* in Russia. With a bit of local charm.

They chose to submit this over “Portrait of a lady on fire”!?!? This is just as bad as when in 2016 South Korea didn’t submit “The Handmaiden” (the handmaiden was a sure Win not just a nomination). Welp, don’t expect to win anything France your own fault.
Tuco Ramirez yes I was at Cannes and saw both and you are one of the one of the only people I know who prefer this film more. Also, there is politics behind the Oscars and Strategy involved and universally American audiences (and the majority of academy voters) like Portrait of a lady on Fire much more than this film. Both would lose to Parasite 2019 anyway, but I’m scared France may not even get a nomination because of this choice.
While I preferred "Portrait of a Lady on Fire", that doesn't make "Les Misérables" a poor choice. It's just as strong and powerful, only in a different way.
are you comparing the Handmaiden situation to this movie being nominated ? The first french black director to be nominated ? When this movie had even better reviews than Portrait in France ? Sciamma has released several films, was in a prestigious cinema school but this man releases his debut film that NO ONE wanted to finance (and he never went to film school) and you think it's bad ? have you even seen the film ? do you understand what it represents to POC in France ? And I'll say it again : the reviews for les Misérables (both press AND public) are INCREDIBLE. But nah you're better off with established white directors being nominated I guess
L'éloge du 93, this is a movie which glorifies hoodlums from the worst area in France. The kind of area where a white guy would get mugged by a group of 20 senegalese teens on a daily basis. The idea that the police mistreat these guys is laughable. Rocks get thrown at cops, I've never heard of this in the US. A couple years ago some where of these hoodlums threw kerosene in two cop cars and lit it on fire while they were still inside. Two cops were gravely injured and out of the kids who did this, a fraction of them only got 10 to 20 years with chance of parole, so they will only be there for 5 years.
People have been known to throw bottles and chicken bones out the windows at cops in the projects in NYC. Also a few have been executed in recent years www.nytimes.com/2014/12/21/nyregion/two-police-officers-shot-in-their-patrol-car-in-brooklyn.html

They chose to submit this over “Portrait of a lady on fire”!?!? This is just as bad as when in 2016 South Korea didn’t submit “The Handmaiden” (the handmaiden was a sure Win not just a nomination). Welp, don’t expect to win anything France your own fault.
Alchemist1330 I’ve heard this movie is pretty good though...
Have you actually seen this movie ?
Cause i'm french, i've seen both, and i prefered 'Les Misérables'.
Great movie

Bellissimo
This movie glorifies no one. And have you heard about Zyed and Bouna ?
Glorifies? Yeah right... Everyone wants to move to Montfermeil after watching it.
Anyone thought of the musical?
@abrahamWCE ok
Brilliant ❤️ the best movie I’ve seen this year
Awesome movie! Must see more than twice ☺
Oulala !
Loved it
@@alessandrovigano1987 ahahaha what are you speaking about? the italian police have no power and simply do nothing, only watch what happens..... about Europa, you are simply wrong, in all east Europa the situation is totally under control.
@@ArgoPower 1) i have never spoken about east europe.
2) when i said that i meant about manifestations in Bologna, Pisa, Firenze, Milano and Torino when police used too much violence
@@alessandrovigano1987 1. tous le pays d'europe includes east ... for your information
2. What are you talking about? If the police tell you to stop, you must immediately stop, if you don't, you have consequences, this is normal public order. Are you watching the video where you are putting your comments? Is the fr police less brutal than the it police?
Watched at JFF, and recommend this.
Unbalanced trailer for a great film. The film shows the police's perspective with much more nuance than the "I am the law" line.
no había otro título?

It is sad to say, but unfortunately France is becoming the Brazil of Europe. And that is an unworthy end for one of the most beautiful civilizations in history.
ok boomer
This film represent only 5% of France.
Imagine saying this based on a movie trailer, go outside buddy internet is bad for your brain cells
Some tourist say that Paris is very dangerous now ,so sad but that’s what Europeans want by opening their doors to other religions and people from Africa ,they’re always trouble.
have you ever been to Greece? LOL
I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I'm living
So different now from what it seemed
Now life has killed the dream
I dreamed
Just watched this in cinema now... Omg, highly recommend to not waste your time. Nothing to do with Les Misetables, completely unrelated, not a cinema movie for sure... Unless you wanna watch some cheap movie about life in french ghetos.
This is not the Les Miserables I know! Wtf!?
La bande annonce pitche tellement mal le film 🤦
Someone needs to come up with an original idea
