Hey. Great video. This really helped. I found it to be super accurate as per my travels in Central America. Great editing too. You did a great job of showing what it looks like down there. Quick Question…I drove all through Costa Rica for 7 days in a Rental vehicle. You think Guatemala would be more difficult or about the same?

Talking about the security is very sad that we are mostly known as a dangerous place, of course we have danger just like in any other place but, as a guatemalan girl that lives in the city I can tell that Atitlan and his villages especially San Juan is amazing when it comes to safety, you feel secure every time, you can walk in the streets at midnight and all is safe, they take care very well of the tourists since they mostly live and depend on tourism to survive. And yes, we are very very friendly people, we are warm and we treat everyone with much courtesy, for strangers might be weird but thats they way we are. Welcome to Guatemala everyone

When I was 15, my family and I had three banditos jump out on the road, one with an uzi, one had a revolver, and the other some kind of standard clip pistol aimed at our vehicle. The driver of our vehicle stopped. They got in our van, took us down in a valley and robbed us. I thought they were probably going to shoot us when they asked us to take off our shoes and face down in the dirt. Instead... they just wanted our shoes. And my mom... they didn't touch her. I went down to Guatemala 2 more times and never had an incident like this. As an adult, I've come to learn more about the Guatemalan civil war and this post war period. We were down there in this post civil war period. Much of the army had been disbanded. We found out those who robbed us, were part of this army that formerly had jobs, but now were jobless. We also found out that local vigilantes apparently found their bodies chopped up by machetes in the jungle about a year later. Apparently they were not being well received by us or anyone else... It was strange to me that these people were literally robbing us because... poverty. It was just really bad poverty in a lot of places. I think Guatemala today has overcome the worst that poverty has to offer. People with more prospect of a future treat themselves and their neighbors better. I think it was this time in my life that planted a seed that caused me to just hate human poverty deeply and the trappings of it. I'm sure it's a much safer place today. It was a little bit holy shit when I was down there 25 years ago though, in this post war period. I think that's partially why Guatemala gets a bad reputation. It's lingering problems from that time. That said, I can't speak of the Guatemala of today as I haven't been down in over 2 decades, but I'm sure it's safer. Now I'm grown and have a 15 year old daughter. I think it's time to go back to Guatemala and check it out again and bring my wife and daughter.

Cosi vero. So true but Guatemala for centuries needs more support and good publicity in the international stage. Is so beautiful and rich the United Kingdom of Guatemala established since 1609 and that extends from El Soconusco (today Chiapas) to part of Panama. Guatemala is 12th producer of silver in the world and 20th producer of gold besides having massive reserves of nickel, jade and so many other natural resources too bad for almost a century big foreign multinational anglosaxon corporations have been taking almost everything. Long live Juan Santamaria the heroe of Costa Rica who died in battle against the anglo pirates. The Malvinas belong to Argentina, The Esequibo belongs to Venezuela and Belice belongs to Guatemala. Guatemala exploited and sabotaged for almost a century but never gives up. Long live Latinoamerica United and Free against the english piraterism of centuries. God bless

I only know Antigua, Santiago Atitlan and Chiquimula. Last year we went together with my husband for the first time, visited Puerto San Jose, I would not recommend it. There are better beaches like Monterico and Hawaii. I love visiting for many reasons, I love the culture, people passing by will always greet you with good morning, good afternoon, good evening. They don't even know you but it's the Guatemalan hospitality. Glad you enjoyed your trip. Hoping one day I can visit Livingston, looks lovely!

I moved to Guatemala to live with my best friends who were working in the US and got deported, so I am very familiar with life here.
    Some things to note:
*The weather is springtime-like in the major tourist areas that he visited. Weather here is based on altitude: it is hot in the western lowlands and quite cold high in the mountains.
    * I agree with him that it is quite a safe country. Locals say if you are not involved with illegal drugs in any way, you'll probably be okay. I travel all over by myself and have never had any negative experiences. Of course, Guatemala City can be dangerous, as can any big city. I don't spend much time in the capital, and always go accompanied by local friends... so I recommend finding out which areas are the safest.
    * I do not have a vehicle here. I live in a rural area and take a tuk-tuk into the small towns nearby. It's almost door-to-door service. I travel by camioneta (chicken bus - retrofitted US school buses) for longer trips, like from the capital city to my rural community, or to visit friends all over the west coast. I call it a party on a bus; camionetas are crowded - they really pack us in with three people to each bench originally intended for two school children, and people standing in the aisles. I ask before boarding if there is a seat, as I do not want to stand for a long trip. If there is no seat available, I wait for the next camioneta. Food venders, snake oil salesmen, beggars, preachers all hop on the bus and sell their goods give their spiels... it's fun.

"South Americans" for real? Hahaha Guatemala belongs to CENTRAL AMERICA and South America begins in Colombia and ends in Chile and Argentina. Just for the records Canada, United States and Mexico belongs to NORTH AMERICA.
It is good to know that Guatemalans in your community are hard workers because the Central Americans that live where I work are the opposite from those in your community sadly but real.

Everywhere in the world there are hard working people and everywhere in the world there are LAZY PEOPLE ! Most latino Americans think they're to good to do just any kind of work but when they find themselves in USA they do anything to earn a living ! Here a person cleaning floors or washing dishes can make more money than a teacher or other professions in Latin America and thats a fact ! Blessings !

A few are actually active now. One puffs every 30 minutes right next to Antigua. Pecaya is also active near Guatemala City

FYI the guatemalan currency name is "Quetzal" if you say "Quetzales" then you're talking in plural (more than one Quetzal). But you're right Guatemala is more affordable than Costa Rica and Mexico. Your video is very informative about the country.

I would just add chicken buses and taxis (very full, shared ones!) are also good ways to get around. There is good public transport using these modes outside of the capital. It’s a very morning culture, so expect fewer options for travel as the day goes on 😀 I have had many friends come visit from the US, but none have had any success in renting a car here. I’d be curious to know if other people have been able to!
