I learned more in this video than I did in an entire year of fiddling around with the knobs on this thing, thanks Bob!!!!
I'm glad this helped you! Thanks for the comment!
THAT was amazing. If I had to do that harmony I'd be tempted to give the harmony part more 'highs' and, probably, more gain. What you did with that harmony shows pure artistic intuition and general experience. Thank you so much.
You're welcome! And thank you for that comment!!
1. Thank you. 2. Bright, Tight, Brief. 3. Well done.
Thank you Jerry!
The flow of information in this video is outstanding. I ve been producing music for 7 years to this day and I always appreaciated great people like you.
Eventhough I ve been using pretty much the same technics, it was a pleasure to learn it again :)
So simply, thanks.
Much loves from Turkey, Istanbul.
Thank you for that great comment! Hope all is well in Turkey.
I'm a few years behind your tutorial but many thanks for showing how to do it, great tutorial. :)
Glad it was helpful!
Great video describing what and why you do certain things. what a subtle yet powerful difference these harmonies make. thanks Bob.
Yes, sometimes small tweaks can seem insignificant but add up to big results in the end. Thanks for the great comment!!
I checked - everything is clean
Very well done, Bob. I appreciate how you make such a technical job look so easy. At the time of writing this, I'm demoing the Studio version. Well demonstrated. Thanks, man.
You’re welcome! Thank you for that great comment!!
this is going to be great!

“With nice curves “ would’ve sounded better as a C instead of B. Thanks so much for the tut!
Thank you for this very helpful and loved the touch of you singing the piece at the end😁👌
Glad you found this helpful! Thanks for the comment!!
Bob is really an AWESOME teacher! Your tutorials are easy to understand! By the way, i love "Taylor made"! I've listened to this a lot of times! Thats a great song, friend! Keep doin' your job - its really amazing!
Thanks Rogerio! I appreciate your continued support of my channel!!
What a great tool to add to my music studio!
+Gary K Yes, you won't be sorry!
Love the tutorial Bob! Really well produced video, as usual! Just a tip for when you had the vocal notes that had pitch sliding and they got split up, I often find it's better to just remove the split and get melodyne to treat it as one note. Then you can pitch the main portion of the note to the grid and let the slide sound more natural.
Creator Mark Hey Mark, thanks for the comment and the great tip!! All the best!
Great way to teach - also loved your tutorial doing this without any pluggins. Cool to see you playing at the end enjoying music so much.
Thanks Simon! Appreciate the support!!
Wow! your an amazing teacher. Thanks so much for putting this up.
Thank you for the amazing comment!
Excellent! Great use of Melodyne.

great tutorial - many thanks
Outstanding
Thank you!
You are a great teacher!
Thank you!
Good tutorial!
Thank you!
All good stuff wish you had Studio One I am trying to learn all at one time.
Thanks Willie! I think Studio One is a lot like Logic Pro. At least the principles of recording and using a DAW will be the same. Good luck!
Bob Sell thanks
very nice video!
+New Factory Thank you!
I think this sounds much better than simply slapping Anteres Harmony Engine on there.
Yes, more natural sounding.
Awesome video...thank you
Thanks for the comment!
Niiiiceee
That sounded fine when it was finished. You put it in the back to fill up the score. Have you got any experience of putting a stem under? One has to go lower and the formant shift becomes more prominent but there is the formant tool. Is Melodyne the only option when using ProTools?
***** Pro Tools does not have a lot of stock plugins like Logic. Your options are whatever 3rd party plugins you purchase...
awesome.
Thanks!!
hello. I've only seen the first 30 seconds of the tutorial, pardon me. my 1st concern was which version of Melodyne are you using. reading through the praises of your video I quickly learned that it is in fact, the Editor version of Melodyne.
I recently installed Cakewalk Sonar Platinum. Melodyne Essentials is included with Sonar Plat.
I've been on Melodyne website and cannot find out if the Essentials edition has these features. All I need is the harmony feature, and of course the other things that are so exciting about this product.
Essentials sells for $99. That's not too much to pay, but I would hope I get more than simple pitch correction.
Along with the Sonar, I also installed Waves Horizon as well as Waves Abbey Road Collection. I feel I have enough firepower to do pretty much anything, but this Melodyne appears to be a very sweet addition. I'm just hoping the Essentials will give me what I would need that is included in your video. Also curious what is in your Editor version that is NOT in the Essentials version. Surely there's much more in your version than you're putting to use in your tutorial.
(Good song, from what I've heard thus far. Has a bit of 'Elvis Costello' sound). (That's meant as a compliment).
...back to finish your tutorial
Can't you "Try before you Buy"? Also, you should be able to get all of that info from their website so you know exactly what you are getting with Essentials. I'm not familiar with Essentials so I can't advise you. The full version I'm using is 4.0. Good luck!
Great stuff, Bob! :like:
Thank you Dave!!
awesome video , thank you , i learned a lot XD
Much appreciated! Thank you!!
Thanks Bob, What's the vocal mic you used for this recording? And what mic would you recommend for a high pitch male voice.
+Nupur Waikar I cannot recommend any of the high end (thousands of dollars) mics because I can't afford them and don't have any experience with them. However, I have 3 that I use all the time that I'll shareyou:
I think a great Dynamic vocal mic is the Sure SM7B. This mic was made popular by radio broadcaster because of it great proximity effect. However, Michael Jackson used this mic as his go to for vocals. And you know how high his voice was. I think getting close to this mic helps smooth out the brightness of a high pitch voice. One negative I've heard is that some folks have a hard time getting enough level out of it. I never saw that as a problem in digital recording because of the low noise floor so you can just boost the level when mixing. It's the pricier of the 3 I'm going to recommend but a very nice sounding mic. Here's an Amazon link for more info: goo.gl/vXok5f
The Rode NT1A is a very nice affordable Condenser mic. You can use this for about anything. I find that it a nice presence boost in the upper mids. However, that is not always desirable. If it's the only mic you have you can always cut it with EQ if you find it offending. FYI - almost all condenser mics require phantom 48V power. Here's a link to Amazon for more info: Rode NT1A goo.gl/zhulrq
The most affordable mic is the AKG 1000s! Great sounding condenser mic that I've used a lot for acoustic guitar and vocals. Still need phantom power but you have the option of using batteries if you don't have +48V available. On some things it can sound a little harsh around 1.5 to 2K. However, easy to tame with EQ if unwanted. Check this out on Amazon as well: Here's a link for more info on the AKG 1000S: goo.gl/w8q6Af
Hope this helps! Bob
Thanks again Bob, I currently use a AT2020. pretty good, however would upgrade to RODE NT1A soon :)
Thank you for this video! Have a quick question though, I am using studio one. I copied the original vocal track, deleted everything I didn't want and put what I did want into the 2nd track. However when highlight the 2nd track and go to edit with meladyne to do my harmony it keeps changing the pitch of the full original track as well. If anyone has had this issue as well please let me know how to fix, I'm sure it's something simple I'm overlooking. Thanks
Travis, I'm not familiar with Studio One but it sounds like changes made to the copy is also making changes to the original file. It may be that a copy is just pointing back to the original file. Here's what I'd try. Delete any copies you may have so all you are left with is the original file. Remove all plugins from the track that contains the original. Bounce the original to another track. This creates an exact copy of the original but also creates a separate file. Now when you put the Melodyne plugin on the copied (bounced track of original) it will not effect the original. Good luck!
Moving all the notes a third up and 'correct' which ones are on a sharp/flat is wrong. For example, the second note of the harmony sings the major seventh (the B) now. Which is not necessarily wrong, but in this context it is. The nicest pop-sound would be the tonic (C) or maybe the third (E) (but that's probably a bit dull in this line). I hope people are not going to copy this and think this is the right thing to do!
Hey there, Roberto...
At 1:25, you say "I transferred the audio off-line... because you have to do it in real time."
What exactly do you mean by that? Do you mean you saved the vocal to a wave file, then opened it in Meloydine Stand-alone?
I think you might be using Pro-tools (I am using Studio One 3) but the concept should be the same. What I'm trying to understand is if I need to edit a wav file directly in Melodyne Stand-alone (regardless of which DAW I might be using.)
Thanks!
When you are working with the Melodyne plugin, audio has to be transferred into the plugin in real time. So my transfer was done offline (not part of the tutorial). It has nothing to do with saving a file or the stand-alone version. You are correct, the concept is the same regardless of the DAW.
awesome tks !
Thanks
Thanks, 😎
Thanks for the cool comment!!
great tune..where can i listen to the song.
+Ned O'Millick Ned, thanks for the great comment! The song is Taylor Made. Here's the song in its entirety:

Sorry, but does the dubbed voice stay mono or does it go stereo? Thanks
Stays in mono.
@@BobSell Got it thanks a lot!
What software you using for make track ?
In this video I was using Pro Tools. I also use and prefer Logic Pro X. Hope this helps.
Help. Transfer offline. Does that mean that you are running Melodyne separate from the DAW?
Melodyne is running in the DAW. But you have to transfer the audio into Melodyne for analysis. The transfer was done outside of the tutorial. Hope this helps.
@@BobSell cmd M 🤔
Hi Bob great explanation and walk through of everything. I'm kind of new to producing. Which version of Melodyne are you using? I am only looking for some pitch correction and harmonies. Should I still get the full version around $700 give or take? Or is there a 'lite' version that still does these to this same quality without other bells and whistles I might not need?
Also, I've been learning about software that adds harmonies like this. Can Melodyne perform several other things like:
Changing the formant of voices to sound like female or children? (One of my tracks has a few children singing in it)
And,
Using midi to tell notes where to go?
In this video I was using the Editor V2.0. Still using the Editor but upgraded to V4.0. I think it was around $300. Can't imagine needing more than this. You can download and try it free for 30 days to see if it meets your needs. It will do all that you mentioned but I'm not sure about following MIDI notes. I have Isotope Nectar 2 and it will follow MIDI notes to change pitch. Hope this helps! Thank for the comment!!
Thanks for reply.
Great vocals but i have a question about harmony is it always in the key of C
Vocal harmony needs to be diatonic to the key your playing in. So if your song is in the key of G so will the harmony. Simple harmony is usually up or down a 3rd for the lead vocal line. Hope this helps.
Bob Sell thank for great information deffently subscribing👍👍
Thank you very much!!
Anyone would tell me how these automated harmonizers like Nectar, Antares, Quadravox compare to manual ones such as Melodyne, Waves Tune or NewTone? Which method is better? I still couldn't figure out, but there must be differences!
IMHO Melodyne is the best! Very smooth and natural sounding. However, there is a learning curve on using the program. In addition you'll need some basic knowledge of music scale and harmony. The autotune model can do the math for you but they tend to sound mechanical.
Bob Sell I'll go for Zplane's Vielklang because it's the only plugin that has both automated & manual. Combination of Melodyne & Nectar ❤
is it a free software or do we have to by it??
They may have a free trial but you have to purchase...
Bob Sell ok thanks
Great work‼️😀 Let’s do a project together.
Bob bob bob, the 57 has to be the WORST possible mic for vocals. When I was listening b4 I scrolled down I thought surely he's not using a 57. Mate u need a condenser mic. For one you have to sing directly straight into the mic, and its frequency response is very limited. I'm not in anyway taking a stab a you, I just think your making a mistake with your mic choice.
The SM57 is an all around great dynamic microphone that has been around for years and professionally used for almost everything including vocals. It really depends on your vocalist. Most of the time I use a large diaphragm condenser mic for vocals and acoustic guitar. The SM7B is another great dynamic mic that is not generally thought of as a vocal mic but has been used occasionally capture great performances that's on many records. The SM57 is less than $100 and I've always encouraged my subscribers and home recording enthusiast to focus there efforts on more important things other than spending money on expensive gear. Here's some of the mics I'm currently using:Shure SM7B: goo.gl/vXok5f
SM57: goo.gl/WZ6Wb1
AKG 414XLS Condenser Mic: goo.gl/YXlnSq
Rode NT1A Condenser Mic: goo.gl/47F75X

This would have been a better video if it wasn't for the insipid simpering lyrics. I'm getting more from you than you're getting from me? WTF? What man says that or thinks that? When a woman hears that? She immediately move on to someone who is a man. This guy ain't a man. Why glorify his lyrics with any vocal arrangement at all? I don't get it. Who sings this?
Boy, that song is embarrassingly bad.
GJ man)TY!
Nicely explained. Thank you.
Thank you for that great comment!!
