    The reason is simple, he play Sun Wukong as Sun Wukong, a monkey, others play Sun Wukong as a cool dude. No matter how cool Wukong is he's still a monkey not a born human you can't take out his characteristic.

    After playing through Black Myth Wukong, I’d decided that I’d like to watch the original TV show, and upon starting I was already extremely captivated by how Liu Xiao Ling Tong just disappeared into his portrayal of Wukong. To learn that he was already so familiar with how to portray a character who’s just so animated made me almost believe this was an actual Monkey!! I’m always happy to expand my literary knowledge and to get many perspectives on the stories I’m fascinated by!

    Watching this guy spin and flip, I’m not convinced gravity really applies to him. The fact he did it with a rubber face mask on, while forcing his eyes open and enduring days of weather and difficult shoots, speaks to his dedication to the Monkey King and his determination to bring this character to life.
    Thank you for finding and translating these resources. We in the West had no idea how deep this stuff goes! It’s so cool to discover this deep well of lore i didn’t even really know existed, growing up in the west and only being vaguely aware of the Journey to the West book.

    Appreciate this. Even as someone who watched Dicky Cheung and Stephen Chow's portrayals more, there is something particularly special seeing Liu Xiao Ling Tong's portrayal, and the Southern style in general.

    I'm not even chinese and I first came across Wukong through an old cartoon show about 13 years ago, something about his gang's journey to India. It was such a pleasure to revisit the story through the game Black Myth.

    The only complaint of the main character in BMWK is he is a melancholic figure whereas the monkey king portrayed in novel is full of mischief , humour ,talkative - traits that you can find in a real monkey.

    • @yugenelhc
      @yugenelhc  11 дней назад +2

      Probably not. I once wrote an 16 pages about One Piece for my English 102, and the Chinese influence in One Piece is only in Amazon Lily. One Piece takes inspirations from stories round the world like Venice in Italy, Library of Alexandria, El Dorado in South America etc.

    • @richbt45
      @richbt45 10 дней назад +1

      @yugenelhc That's sounds like an interesting read, you're so right Oda made a mythological soup with One Piece. I guess with my New Found deeper knowledge of Journey to the West I noticed some parallels, Luffy going up to heavens in Skypia, him punching a celestial in the face, the Buddha Sengoku flattening luffy with his hand, the arlong sharks being yaoguais & Luffys transformations... One piece is so long most fans drop in and out of interest but connecting dots to JTTW has brought back a sense of excitement. Also thanks I'll be rewatching all your videos on the Black Myth wukong chapter animations.

    From June 2024 to 31 December 2024 I have watched the following:
    -Journey To the West, 1986, CCTV, 2 times, once in Chinese with English subtitles and once with English audio, including the 2000 sequel.
    -Journey to the West, 1996/1998, TVB, (Dicky Cheung, Benny Chan, Zhu Bajie saying his poem, you know) Chinese audio, English subtitles.
    -Monkey King and the Quest for Sutras, 2002, Hong Kong TV, Chinese audio, English subtitles.
    -Journey to the west, 2009/2010, ZJSTV, Chinese audio, English subtitles (I loved the Ending song, beautiful).
    -Journey to the west, 2011, ZJSTV, Chinese audio, English subtitles.
    I should add that I also read the book, at least its Spanish translation, and watched the classic animated movies, Havoc in Heaven, Princess Iron Fan, and the Stephen Chow Chinese Odyssey movies, including his versions of JTTW. ( Monk Tang singing "Only you" 🤣🤣🤣)
    I enjoyed them all, maybe more with the 1986, 1996 and 2009 TV versions, and the least with the 2002 one. But I must say that for me, Liu Xiao Ling Tong is Sun Wukong. I think I will always associate him with the Monkey King, just like I associate Christopher Reeve with Superman or Tobey Maguire with Spiderman.

      I got the hype from the trailer and that's when I started watching the TV series, but the films, even if they are cartoons, Hollywood adaptations or English miniseries, I've been watching for years, but discovering the TV series was the icing on the cake.
      I'm almost ashamed to say that, as a Spaniard, I have more respect for Sun Wukong than for Don Quixote de la Mancha. 😅

    I did not know there was a 2000 sequel. Did the 86 version complete the story? How did it differ?

    • @arcdraconis9579
      @arcdraconis9579 17 дней назад

      The original run skipped some of the stories which were added in 2000

    • @yugenelhc
      @yugenelhc  11 дней назад

      The 1986 TV show did not have enough budget, so even though originally they plan to have 30 episodes, they only did 25. More than a decade later, the same production team made the 2000 sequel. The 2000 sequel added additional stories that they did not cover in the 1986 show. So the 2000 sequel is not the story after Wukong attaining the Buddahood.

    It looks like your channel is now a Black Myth/ JTTW channel? If this is what you’d like to do, might I suggest focusing more on the lore of JTTW or the game? Like the background behind various characters etc. Or maybe even the Buddhist/Taoist aspects of the story. It might help you get a lot of views. I notice there is almost no content on RUclips explaining the background of the 4 captains in Ch.3 of Black Myth for example, and you might be the go to channel for that sort of content.

      I believe those are smear campaigns and deliberate editing with bad intentions to put dirt on his name. Liu Xiao Ling Tong is not a well-rounded guy so he does not know how to say things in a nice well, and he protects the original image of Wukong, so his criticism of Wukong in A Chinese Odyssey pissed off a lot of people, but I understand what he comes from.
