  • This is a very speculation based discussion video about the apparent links between the Lords of Kobol, Greek Mythology and the characters of Battlestar Galactica. It's of my opinion that the tales of Greek Lore are supposed to be derived from the Kobol religion and stories of the exodus from the 12 colonies all merged together as tales tend to do.
Even if not true, (and likely note) it still makes for some fun analogies I think.

I always thought that both versions of Battlestar galactica happened in the same universe and it's just two of many times that the cycle has repeated.

I think that might have been part of the point of "all this has happened before and will happen again".
So the reboot series wasn't a reboot at all, but a continuation of the cycle.

This. If the cycle is “humans always develop cylons and get almost wiped out, cylons always try to become more human to the point that they make their own cylons,” then the ending everyone hates makes perfect sense. Humans tried to break the cycle by destroying all their tech, but the red stripe cylons would eventually build human-forms again, especially since they have no other way to procreate. The descendants of those human-forms would be the colonials from the original series, who then created their own centurions like the 13th tribe did.

"This has all happened before, and will happen again." is the famous quote from the series, and while if I remember correctly Galactica has been destroyed in pursuit of breaking the cycle I would say a completely different quote fits in here as well "those that do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it"

@@Hyunckel To be fair our AI is far from that level. Our AI models are based on real brains in a way, but the resemblance is distant at best, the way they function is fundamentally different, and I don't mean the difference between flesh and silicon, I mean the difference in function and behaviour and communication. I am unsure whether a neural network the way they currently are could be sentient even if that was our goal when training it. It would try to simulate conscious response and behaviour, but it wouldn't be truly experiencing any emotions, just pretending them in a completely different method to us. I mean, it could (and already does) get accurate enough to fool people, but something like GPT for example has no thoughts of its own or emotions, it just pretends how people speak.
Meanwhile in BSG the original cylon AI was based directly on the human mind, and the first sentient AI was literally a copy of a dead girl, I wish Caprica didn't get cancelled on season 2 because I honestly liked the show, and even if it wasn't perfect it was exploring a very interesting part of the history of the franchise.

“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” I always keep this in mind when thinking of the Lords of Kobol.
In my opinion they were most likely humans from a previous cycle of time who led humanity in an exodus to Kobol, but while the rest of humanity regressed technologically and forgot their origins, the “lords” retained their knowledge and were thus seen as gods. There’s also the very real possibility that they had access to resurrection technology, giving the illusion of immortality.
But in bringing with them the old knowledge, so too did they carry over and repeat the sins which had led them to their exodus in the first place. Realizing too late the damage they caused, they sent greater humanity out into the stars, whilst preferring to die with Kobol, hoping that their sins would die with them and that their children would not repeat their mistakes.
But all of this had happened before, and all of this would happen again...

I'm going to nerd out on this. Here's what we know
    1. Kobol wasn't the original home of humans. "life here began out there"
    2. The cycle of exodus, creation, destruction is a cycle God is trying to break.
    3. God has given everyone free will.
    4. When intelligent things are created but are stripped of free will the cycle is restarted.
    5. Here's mind bending part, which you get from interviews and other expanded canon material.
You don't really know who created who first. The 13th tribe of cyclons became basically human after fleeing Kobol, then their machine creations turned on them. Kobol is where humans fled after they were driven there by a cycle. Humans were the only tribe there.
Here it comes get ready for it. The humans on kobol, the 13 tribes, were..... Cylons who had become human. Remember where they walked among the Gods? This is Canon, the first inhabitants of Kobol who arrived there were Humanoid cylons who gradually became human just like on Earth and created cylons who turned on them...
So all the 12 colonies, that you thought were human ancestors were actually cylon descendants of humanoid cylons. So going even farther, we have no idea where the actual humans are from, most likely given our Earths inhabitants, with the super nova, the timeline etc, the original first true humans who God created are still out in the stars or simply have evolved on to "angels".
We know the cycle has been going on for atleast half a million years with the timeline of the supernova, evolution on our planet etc. We know the angels aren't changing form and a new Gaius and Six will pop up on earth and we know angle gaius and six are in contact with god, and we know angel six and gaius are atleast, at very least half a million years old.
    Mind fuck, I know.

I think that the similarities between the characters in Battlestar Galactica and the Greco-Roman myths were intentional by the writing team.
I think that all of the main characters in the show could be linked to either an Olympian or one of the lower tier gods in the Greek and Roman Pantheons.
(WARNING RUclips COMMENT INFORMATION SIMPLIFICATION INCOMING)
There was a complex "chain of command" with these gods, as there was the Council of Olympus, then descending groups of gods sort of stacked below each other.
There was also extreme variances with their continuity as each city state of Ancient Greece had their own "take" on the myths of their gods, so much so that it gets confusing if you try to make sense out of them as a group.
In some cases Aphrodite and Hecate were Titans who joined Zeus against Cronos and some where they were gods like the rest of the Olympians.
In some stories Hades was part of the Council of Olympus, in some he was an outcast and not one of them.
Some where Hephaestus was also an outcast as well, some where he was a God of Olympus.
There were also differences in "who did what" in their stories as well.
At least the Roman depictions of them, where most of the established stories we know of them were "set in stone", were far more consistent.

The connection between Artemis, Zeus and Apollo is pretty solid. I want to point out that Zeus is the one who gives fate to people as a lord of kobol, which connects very well to William Adama.
Is it possible to connect Anders to Ares? When Kara Thrace prays to Artemis, she also holds a statue of Ares in her hands. Anders is also a buccaneer.
Hecate is definitely one of the final five. The final five invented resurrection technology(which connects them to both necromancy and the underworld) and the episode where 4 of the final 5 are revealed is called "Crossroads". Hecate is also depicted as a goddess of crossroads. And given Hecate is a woman, there are two options of the final five, Ellen Tigh or Tory Foster. The final five also know the location of earth along with Starbuck.
Hecate accepting human sacrifice could be due to Tory Foster killing Tyrol's wife and child for trying to find out the truth.
Could Number 1 be Kronos? Kronos didn't like his children(in this case the other cylon models) and imprisoned them because they feared their downfall. This would mean Kronos to be the missing god.
Perhaps Tyrol can be connected to Poseidon? The blessing of space-going vessels has a parallel to Tyrol maintaining them.
Are we sure there are just 12 lords of Kobol? I am seeing some parallels between Saul Tigh and Dionysius(he has been set to have been "one of the few characters who can bring back a person from the underworld"). 13 is also an important number. Saul Tigh has been known to have affairs and to drink frequently.

Number One might have been Phthonus the personification of jealousy and envy.
As Phthonus was a master manipulator, like One was and he got all the other models into small conflicts with each other like Phthonus did to the Olympian Gods.
The Olympian Gods were only the "ruling body" of the rest of the Ancient Greco-Roman gods, there were multiple other groups of gods below them.
Eg. Hypnos, Nemesis, Nike, Janus, Iris etc.

It's funny as the actually show isn't really about this stuff - it's more like a rather dull melodrama for the most part and it's a show I feel has ages very poorly indeed. The biggest problem with it for me at least is pretty much EVERYONE is unlikable at one point or another. The only difference is the direction of if they get start off worse and get nicer or the reverse.
Kira is an especially unlikable brat to me - I used to prey 6 would snap her neck.

This also explains why our civilization so closely resembles that of the Colonials in terms of dress and custom. These things come to us from our collective race memory gifted to us by Hera.

It could have a premise of Earth receiving a transmission at it's SETI receivers. The premise: look I'm telling you it keeps repeating!!! A message 150 thousand years to deliver. "something about a distress from a planet called....capi no wait Caprica!! " It says something about a catastrophe. On the eve of the first warp driven Earth ship leaving to Jupiter, a journey that has happened before, is now about to happen again. The show could be called "Children of the Twelve". Where Earth had invented AI as well, but it has become a companion of man, not his replacement.

I understood the cycle idea from the first time I saw the ending ( I liked the ending). "This has happened before, and it will happen again." The line is repeated over and over. Our Earth is part of another cycle. It's up to us. Do we continue it, or do we break it?

  • @Shermos
    @Shermos 5 лет назад +1

The problem I have with the way BSG ended is the writers made the colonials find and settle on Earth in the distance paste, so Hera could become the "Mitochondrial Eve" whose remains are found in our present. But somehow the lords of Kobol are supposed to influence the Greko-Roman pantheon which only become part of a practiced religion relatively recently. It took many thousands of years of cultural and social development before someone decided to copy the Kobol lords.
I like the idea of the mitochondrial Eve thing, but it would have made more sense if they landed closer to Greek times.

    • @DrFranklynAnderson
      @DrFranklynAnderson 4 года назад

Shermos According to the show, All Along the Watchtower was written by at least three different people-Anders, Starbuck’s dad, and Bob Dylan-thousands of years apart. Where you headcanon it as “genetic memory” or “divine inspiration,” it amounts to the same thing: complex ideas can reappear totally independent of each other. Why not the Kobol/Greek pantheon?

  • @roberthicks1612

I was really hoping to see some discussion of the cycle of time in the series.
For instance, you find that the 5 were from the race that created their cylons and then headed in one direction while the 12 cylon races went another direction. Yes, the humans were the cylons of the previous cycle.
In each cycles, the creations added something to the beginning of the next. As such the living race is constantly improving.
In this video you mentioned that they found a race similar when they found the new home and that their data said they could have interbred. There is no indications this happened, BUT it would explain the "missing link" between us and the earlier race that lived here.
I often wonder if anyone noticed that the reason the cylons could not have children is they thought of themselves as machines. ONLY when they forgot this, could they conceive and only by not thinking of themselves as machines could they bear that child. None of the men could stop thinking of themselves as male and when they forced human women to bear their children the women saw it as rape and them as machines so they could not bear the children.
When they were undercover but knew who they were, they could still not have children. ONLY when Sharon forgot temporarily that she was a machine was she able to conceive. Then because she was so much in love, she thought of herself as human and thus bore the only living hybrid.
It was THIS child that is consider the eve of the human race.

What you say about Roslin about how quickly she could turn on the menace is spot on. The Ur example for me is right after the Colonials had recaptured Baltar, and she came to see him in his cell.
At first she was all professionalism, even a bit casual, until she realizes he wasn't going to talk, and goes from calm to scary in .0005 seconds. She's suddenly throwing pictures of dead colonials at him asking him if he remembered them. He starts protesting, but she doesn't care, she just steams head now shouting at him, then screaming for Saul to get in there and Baltar to be spaced immediately. Her hair was disheveled, and she was out of breath by the end of the scene, looking like something out of a half remembered dream you had one hot summer nigh...
    Wait, was I saying?
And why do I keep thinking the words "legislate me, mommy"?

Lee - I would totally agree is an Apollo type character (especially when you consider his marriage and how Apollo was always a tragic lover)
Kara - I would think is more Thanatos of Eris since she has a more bringer of Death or Discord arch to her main character. Eris works particularly well since there is a lot of arguments over if she had a father or not and her mother is Nyx in the versions where she has no known father that makes her the daughter of the goddess of darkness
Captain Adama - I would agree is the head of the Pantheon, but I would suggest he represents the Pantheon that was headed by Poseidon since they made such a big deal about him being from Tauron and the colony being a bread basket and legal hub of the Colonies that it would make sense to tie him to an Earthly power rather than a Heavenly power god, plus Poseidon watched over all sailors and space fairing militaries are treated more like a Navy then a Air Force.
The 8's - I don't really know who I would attribute them to specifically since their characters change a lot depending on which 8 it is but I would agree Athena is one of the more common character themes they do with
Rosilin - I would think is more Themis or possibly even just a Pythia incarnation since she serves more as an Oracle type in the main points plus even when she wasn't President of the Colonies anymore Captain Adama still always consulted her about battle plans before carrying them out and an ancient Greek and Roman thing was "you don't go to war before talking to Oracle first."
The 6's - I would suggest are more Peitho than Aphrodite since Peitho is more "I'm so hot and sexy won't you please follow me to your death" and Aphrodite is more "I'm madly and deeply in love with you and want to spend the rest of my life with you" in terms of the kind of seduction they represent... plus her lover was Hermes who was the messenger, healer, and trickster god of the Greco Roman Pantheon... and who does that sound like it could be?

The reason why the Lords of Kobol recur as the Twelve Gods of Olympus is not because of tales passed down through time, but because of the Cylon mechanism of Organic Memory transfer. This was imparted to Earth based Humanity through Hera who was half Cylon. This also goes a long way in explaining why many other aspects of the modern world resemble Colonial society.

This is quite far from a stretch. Believe me when I say that creators of any sort of art piece based on mythology, really dwell on what they try to convey by using the mythical references. BSG uses lots of mythical themes and stories not only the gods. Kara's death in the eye for example, the way it is depicted, mirrors the story of Icarus (Kara) and Deadalus (Bill). Classical mythology presents a cyclic understanding of time instead of a linear one. This all have happened before and it will happen again. This line itself is very mythological.

Also of note the Colony of Scorpia is linked with Dionysus as its patron Lord of Kobol. I always thought that Sharon Valerie was never really an Athena more of a Demeter type with Hera being Persephone and Sol Tigh was Ares. A reboot idea - the tillium ship explodes while heading to the sun. This throws off the trajectory of BSG sending it into a comet like orbit. It returns 125,000 years later and seen as a destructive meteor. The world leaders of Earth plan to destroy it thinking it will wipe out earth but discover that it is a battle ship of old. They find a skeleton in a dried up pool in the Galactica. They eventually figure out how to operate Galactica and make duplicate battle star ships. They also figure out the computer system and star charts. They also find other space craft that return from their comet like orbits and use them to travel and populate other planets. They discover written account of the 12 tribes. The cyclons are bumped into and they want to meet humans, but humans see them as an enemy and are eventually attached and history repeats itself.

Interesting analysis, but... what does it have to do with the mythos and worldview of the Colonies? "All of this has happened before, and will happen again" is a fascinating idea that underlay the entire series. We see it repeated in the myths of the Lords of Kobol, and the Colonials own sense of shame(?) at creating the Cylons, and finally strongly hinted at in the final scene in our modern world. An analysis of THAT cycle is what I was expecting to see (and would still like to, please!). Needless to say, I'm disappointed that you let yourself drift into an explanation of the Greek pantheon and how they mirrored characters. Can you try a part 2, perhaps?

If you throw the names of every movie, tv series, play, and book into a hat (really big hat, at least 10 gallons) and draw randomly any one you choose will have characters representing the greek mythos. We've built our society around around it to such a degree that it's unavoidable.

Ok got a question. I've always wondered. There were twelve inhabited planets. not to mention the moons. and we already have underground bunkers that can withstand nuclear blasts and our technology isn't anywhere near what theirs was. so I believe that it's possible there were survivors on those 12 worlds after the cylons left to chase the Galactica. All it would have taken is one bunker and a group of people and after the cylons left they could have re-established the colonies. Do you think that's possible?
