IN this song, I managed to get the G7 chord without looking at the strums in like 75% :D It's not perfect yet at all but i like that by repeating the same chords over and over my muscle memory is starting to develop.
Strumming with your thumb is perfectly acceptable. If you never want to learn specialty strums and various muting techniques you can do a lot with just a thumb strum and have fun. I do know that folks that have learned how to do those cool fun techniques - like chucking, are glad that they did. More tools to sound cool.
