There were old cassettes like that its not so much unusual as just obsolete, cassettes without reels can have higher capacity because as one side fills up the other side empties so you can fit about 40% more tape.
I had one that looks about the same, but... can't recall if it was a Toshiba, which had a 5-band equalizer that took a bit of an effort to slide. To save on batteries... I never used the fast forward and never rewind, but instead... twirled the the tape around a pen. Mine also had an anti-jam mechanism that prevented all of my tapes from getting damaged by it. The front was thin like the back while the batteries... headphone jack... and batteries were the spine. I never played my original copies on it, only what got saved to what were 120-minute HQ blanks. It lasted for over 4 years, which by then stuck with mp3 players able to store at least 40'000 minutes of songs.

That's a sick design, I love it.
The cassette is also unusual, with the large flanges on the reels, like a reel to reel. Very nice.

I assume it has pegs that latch to the little holes on the bottom of the cassette
