Finally found it. That was the Walkman I had back in 1984 when I was a teenager. The KT-VS1. The design was next-gen compared to its peers. It came with a clip-on plastic bracket that you could attach to a belt. I could hear this nice gentle pop when it started playing. I think I gifted it to a friend after.

The grease on Walkmans tends to hold pretty well, did a repair on a 30+ year old WM-36 a few days ago and the thing was still slippier than a flopping fish.
I also noticed that the audio sounded a bit "wobbly". I reckon it's the belt that he put in there. I ordered one of those 50 packs of belts and they literally make every cassette player I put them in sound like garbage

I thought the same and shock my head. Nearly all of these things have spent time in a hot storage unit or garage before going on eBay and the lubricants turn to varnish and goo by then. I use silicone oil and silicone grease for lubricating all moving parts and their bearing points and then things usually work fine. The young man in the video is gaining experience and he’ll eventually work it out….I hope.
That Walkman also has an FM tuner that looks like a cassette tape.

Found one of these broken at a good will. Tried repairing and when j opened it I smelled old chicken over the mustysmell of old Cherry soda. Also it was very damaged from the soda
I think I know why the thing wasn't spinning at first and then took so long to speed up. The flywheel was meant to have a metal bracket that keeps it straight and stops it falling out that is attached by 3 screws. You forgot to screw it back on when you first tested it so the flywheel was probably going against more friction as well as wobbling around because it didn't have the bracket to support it. Anyways great vid!!
I was a diehard walkman guy too. Love the old walkmans. I have a small collection as well.
Hey Elliot this is an old vid but I'd really like to see you open a Walkman like the EX194, EX190 etc. - those guys have a very interesting build, not just tabs that need pushing in but they also use screws. The PCB also has wires soldered to the motor so it's a nice challenge, and the models themselves are pretty sleek. I think you'd really enjoy fixing one up, did a full repair on a rusted one a few days ago and boy was that satisfying.

Love it! Quick tip for making a walkman play really steady; one you get a belt in there clean the wheels while it's spinning. My F100 improved a lot when I did that. I just got alcohol on a q tip, and then used a thin screwdriver to press it deep into the groove for the belt. Sometimes I'd have just the screendriver in there because I'd be able to feel a bump of like hardened belt goop and whatever.

Just remember, no matter what you heard or read, cassette tapes do NOT have to sound terrible. Prerecorded tapes weren't mostly made to high standards, and also when a lot of people recorded their own cassettes (from whatever source), they often used VERY low-quality "store brand" cassettes and recorded them on low-end equipment, cheap boom boxes and the like. A good quality, name-brand cassette from Maxell, TDK, Sony, BASF, etc, recorded on at least a decent mid-grade cassette deck, can sound very good indeed. And as far as players and recorders "eating" cassettes, that was mostly due to the pinch rollers and capstans not being kept clean. Anyway, happy to see someone take an interest in cassettes, and rescuing an old player from the rubbish heap.
You should look for a potentiometer on the board to adjust the speed so that it runs as close to original speed as possible. You're almost guaranteed to have to do that after a belt change to get it exactly right, after letting the belt stretch into place.

I knew I recognised the song and I knew it was Fleetwood Mac but I couldn’t for the life of me remember the name. I even knew who was singing.
I applaud you for taking interest in restoring the unit but there’s a little more to properly bring it back to life. These old players use silicone oil and grease for its moving parts, it’s critical to NEVER use anything other than silicone base lubricants otherwise the nylon/plastic gears will swell, weaken then crack over time. Remove each gear and wheel in the drive system and clean out the bearing pocket and wheel/gear shaft then apply the oil or grease (usually oil) and silicone grease on gear teeth but only a small amount. This ensures the drive system doesn’t have any points of resistance as it operates. Once you KNOW the drive system is free of any restrictions or binding points, you can look deeper as to the issue which is often the pinch rollers so check those and the posts.
Learning on low value items like this is an excellent learning tool since many vintage players are similar internally. Well done overall young man.

I've always loved the idea of owning a portable cassette player, even though it's not my era, and to have a vintage/retro model would be great. Maybe one day I'll come across one and be able to repair it thanks to your videos!

I just bought one like this but in red. Cant wait for it to arrive from Japan. Its a KT-RS1. Very similar but looks like much more of a pain to replace the belt. Wish me luck. It looks mint from the photos.

Just as a little heads up to owners of early Toshiba Walkmans, they might be starting to need new capacitors now or soon. Not sure on this specific one, but I own a Toshiba KT-S1, 2 KT-S2s and a KT-S3, the S1 seems ok still but both S2s had leaky caps (the larger 220uf ones) and the S3 was totally destroyed by a ton of the caps leaking. I assume Toshiba used similar parts in all of these machines so it's just something to keep in mind that they could need some electrical work done soon even if they still function ok

Toshiba have made some decent personal stereo,s nice looking unit .My latest favorite is a sanyo 4400 from 1981 quality Japanese model now got 2 of these 2nd one is boxed and working first one is good condition but i reckon the caps and the audio amp ic,s need replacing .

Walkman is a SONY trademark, and I do believe they put up huge fights with whoever used their name... other than that, a slight oiling of the metal parts would not have gone amiss... enjoyed this though...

There's a little screw on the board, which isn't removeable, you need a phillip screw driver to turn it, adjust it so you can get the orignal speed back:)

LOL you are showing that you are young. Walkman is a Sony trademark and was viciously protected by Sony. So when we used to go into the shop to buy one they were either called personal HiFi or personal stereo 😁
He knows it's a trademark, but it's been genericised now, the same way sellotape, hoover and Saran wrap are trademarks.

Your belt is too elastic to pull the flying wheel and it will cause woofer or distortion in playback sound. And you did not insert a cassette tape and tried it.

I'm actually considering getting a cassette player but I'm not sure what to get. I posted this on the Facebook page and I'd like your opinion if you've got a good recommendation.
Not Elliott but I should try. It all depends on where you reside and what you want from your player. You can scan your local Classifieds / Craigslist / OLX / yard sale(s) / thrift store(s) / charity(ies) / flea market(s) for one of the following, preferably with the option to see in person how well (or not) it works:
1) A walkman (not necessarily Sony). Nice if it has a tape type selector and at least one kind of Dolby. Auto reverse is a pain because it puts the head out of alignment. You can, however, adjust it one last time (with a pre-recorded cassette, focusing on the highs for the best alignment) and then switch the reverse off for good. Also the Sony DD series and some other select D-models break right and left. I wouldn't bother with the DD. Here's a repair guide so that you can see the most common quirks with these models: www.tapeheads.net/showthread.php?t=62079
2) A boombox, either a classic ghettoblaster with flashing lights and tape selectors and Dolby switches, or the new stuff with/without the fake flashing lights, but with a simple mechanism and basic construction. My plasticky Denver turned out to be capable of putting out some very nice sound after I cleaned everything well and adjusted the motor a bit. However, if you have tapes recorded with Dolby, you NEED Dolby for a neutral sound.
3) A full-size / half-cut (like in the Vwestlife's video) deck. For playback, it may turn out that you don't even need Dolby or tape type selection. Should you ever need to record, as a general rule of thumb, you either buy a rather basic (with type selection and Dolby B(/C)) Japanese company deck and stick to several kinds of tape (usually Maxell UR, TDK D and TDK SA) for the best sound and try everything else at your own risk, or acquire a higher grade machine with manual calibration knobs (bias-level-sensitivity-etc.) or an auto calibration function. Then you can stick your BASFs and Sonies and Philipses (Philipsae? 🤣) and Ampexes and Memorexes and Magnas inside to make excellent recordings (preferably at 0 dB *wink* , except for Sony).
Everything above, save for some expensive items, applies to USED machines.
An extremely expensive brand new Teac/TASCAM is also an option, with some compromises. Crosley/GPO/Jensen isn't. Same plasticky handicrafts under different labels may cost a fraction of the price.
Finally, it's never a bad idea to ask what kind of service the machine received in the last couple of years. Also check whether there are a reasonable number of spare parts for your model available online or locally. Consult Audiokarma and Tapeheads and any other forum or community you see on your way (except for Urban Outfitters, I beg you!) for further reference.

This is not a walkman. Just like not every portable mp3 player is an ipod, not every portable cassette player is a walkman.
Technically its not a Walkman, but that became the generic term for all these portable cassette players no matter what the brand was.
