It sent Farley into a deep depression and back to rehab when he saw it in the theatre. He was always very hard on himself, but still, these assholes just trying to make a quick buck...
The bat was actually a puppet created and controlled by Greg Nicotero, who now does the zombie makeup for "The Walking Dead" and directs a lot of the episodes. How cool is that?
