Mr.Shaffer. Great video, Sir. I know very little about trains and became interested in these videos recently. I feel like it’s a rare documentation you presented here. We all appreciate your efforts. Thank you again.
You can tell this video is done in the United States. In Canada they do not pile the coal above the tops of the cars. They are then sprayed with two coats of polymer to reduce the dust. It is very harmful to breath coal dust so every effort is made to reduce it. Check out CP Coal Spray Carlin for videos on the process.
Some mines do this, others don’t. I live next to the CSX Henderson Sub in Robards, KY, and there’s quite a bit of Southern IN, Southern, IL coal that goes south to FL and GA. Not all of those are loaded very high over the top. I’ve never noticed coal dust being a problem in my little town, maybe they spray it with something as well, idk.
Enjoyed so much and brought back my many years of loading the coal trains. We after many years of dealing with dirty cars, open doors and yes completely full cars ( with new modern technology )mounted a camera about 2 cars back from the load out so not only the load out man could see each car as they were coming under the load out but the train crewman in the loadout could to. I could write a book of things that takes place before and after the the cars are loaded just inside the loop!
Back in the World War II years there were coalmines galore in southern Illinois that fed the steel mills in Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania, and the Illinois Central was among the major players.
Nice of you to share in your occupation Thank's I like your video like sitting next to you a real treat hope RR didn't get mad at you. Tell them Thank's for providing the powerful train with a worn/broken operator's seat. Tell em get it repaired you don't want hemoroids or broken vertebrate ha ha. Thank You Sir for a great video !!!
Actually, no. The mines were in place long, long before the environmental movement was ever thought about or started. If you take a look at a good map and start at Bulford, IL, follow the railroad south and you will see many mines active (last time the map was made) and several that have been shut down. The smaller the mine, the more likely it's closed. What is the future of coal mines? Hehe, well if people are awake they see this week in TX, (02-15-2021) rolling blackouts due to the wind turbines "freezing" due to odd super cold weather. Have you heard the latest news? The egg-heads are predicting the globe is headed for another ice-age... When will science people face the true facts of life, everything runs in cycles...

So is the line between the coal mine and the main line of tracks, a brand new line that has been laid or is it a older line that has had the grade, and track replaced recently?
Neat video. Thanks. Where geographically is Pond Creek Canada? Never mind, I read the comment and it is in southern Illinois, near Marion. I was confused because I didn't know that Canadian National ran down into the US but now I know.
It starts it Fulton, KY and runs just to the west of Paducah, KY then crosses the Ohio River into southern IL(Metropolis). It meets the line that goes through Cairo, IL at Edgewood, IL. I believe it was created to help relieve traffic congestion at Cairo, back in the early 20th Century.

Thanks you BuD for let us ride along keep up good work 🙏🏾

Having been involved with the coal industry back in the 90's, I enjoyed this quite a bit. Nice selfie, too.
Wow! Beautiful track! Thanks for the video! Sure enjoyed the cab ride!
The whistling as the train goes into the turns, deafening 🙉🙉 still enjoying the the journey though.
Good video. Like many jobs, 95% boredom and 5% panic. Very interesting none the less!
True. But on the railroad there isn't room for even 5% panic. 5% panic on the railroad = 100% sh*t stained drawers.
I love your videos. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for sharing this! I would love to see more,if ya ever get the chance!
Good old Mach Mining. Delivered part there for Cat. Very tight tunnel going under the tracks.

It’s still a very active railroad

I had an uncle that retired out of Fulton in 05. He also worked the Edgewood Sub a lot, even worked out of Memphis quite a bit.
Enjoyed the video very much .... Love the sounds of the inner workings of the loco's ...
Thanks for the video. I think we are going to need coal for many years to come.
joemc111 We have 250 years of coal left, so we should be covered.
More than that.
WE now have a "fly in the ointment" called...Joe Biden. Shutting coal mines and coal fired power plants down in 2022.

Nice to be in the driver's seat of a train.

You ought to try doing the coal mines of Arkansas Tennessee Kentucky west Virginia and Virginia

How tight are those curves at 6:00 and 7:42 that your wheels squeal so loud?
love it love it love it
Someday I would love to take another train ride (but from the front engine).
Nice! Is camcorder's "steady-cam" turned on?
Why no flange oilers? Not enough trains? Great looking roadbed! Wye looks like a real Y !

What is used to move sooo slowly at the load out? Is there a set notch on the throttle or something else like riding the brakes somehow?

the next best thing new train locos have is dynamic brakes
still wont stop em in a hurry but who sits onthe rail road tracks in front of an oncoming train should be killed
im a engineer train driver for csx have had many scary moment
I find it fun cn a Canadian train company in the usa that train probably has not seen home sense the day it was built
Just engines. Not CN employees.
This used to be the Illinois Central RR, which was purchased by CN in the late 90s.
So is the line between the coal mine and the main line of tracks, a brand new line that has been laid or is it a older line that has had the grade, and track replaced recently?
Both
Good videos, guess you stopped posting them tho, too bad.

They bought the Illinois Central RR in late 90s. The ICRR has tracks from Chicago to the Gulf and other lines.
Super
was this in the earlie morning?
Why is track speed so slow.?rail and track seems in good shape..
The coal cars have to loaded at a slow speed.
Where does this coal go?
What is the sound at 29:02?

Why does this thing run so slow?
It has to to be able to properly load the coal hoppers.
