52 must-drink wines in 8 minutes!

  • After a whole year of planning and a thorough blind tasting, we finally picked 52 best wines from hundreds of candidates. Just like we picked our wine, we selected only the best moments in a short and sweet 8 minute video! If you want to study wine, seriously, this video will help you through your journey for days to come!
The production of this video was possible due to a dozen of Korean importers funding and supporting this project. I can't even count the meetings I've had with all the importers, to make this project a thing. So dozens of importers submitted hundreds of wines for the project. And as we've said many times in the video, the judges of those wines, Peter and I, were completely oblivious as to what they were. That was the whole point of this project. Every individual bottle were concealed with paper bags during the tasting, so we couldn't possibly guess what they were beforehand. It was, in my words, a 'perfect blind tasting'. Therefore, importers couldn't just send any wines to promote them as they want. they sent their best wines, and we didn't know anything about it until we tasted them. That's how the whole thing was done. Of course, with dozens of importers, some of them sent a lot of wines and some of them just a few. The deal was like this: importers with a lof of wine selected during tasting would have to provide more supports to the production of our content, and vice-versa. When none of their wines were selected, the importers weren't charged anything. Not even an entry fee. It was completely free. So in summary, each importer had a choice as to participate in this project and how many wines to submit, but nothing else. We did our tasting completely blind, but importers were promised to give supports proportional to the number of wines selected. That was the behind the scene of all this. So with those 52 wines selected, I can be sure to say we've chosen them without prejudice. So all the wines selected, I'll be bringing them wherever I go, drinking them with all the wonderful foods around the world. You'll be able to watch that in my channel, since I'll be filming all of it!~

The audio is a bit unstable as the tasting was done in various circumstances. Thanks for being understanding. And here are the answers to the most frequently asked questions in the comments:
    1. The price difference between USA and South Korea reflects the average, real-life retail values. This is not just a simple calculation based on the won-dollar exchange rate. Market prices are heavily influenced by the economy of scale, and the gap often widens as the price range goes up in case of wine. Because of this, when purchasing very, very expensive wine from abroad in Korea, it is entirely possible to fly there yourself and actually save money.
    2. Many people have been wondering what the "paid sponsorship" mark means in the video. I've written about it in detail in the description box.
    3. All the wines were chosen by perfect blind tasting, by Peter and me. We've judged the wines solely on the price and quality.

Jae always grateful for the amount of work that you put into these video and posts.
i search maybe like 1/2 of the wines on the list but it seems that most are not available within the states exception of some states like NY/NJ, CA (nor cal), and FL.
Is great that you are able to get these wines from these importers, but i just miss the days when you actual went to the stores and purchase the bottle yourself since you were field verifying what is available to local or common market.
Really hoping you will go back to your older format.

Nice to have it confirmed. The same with unanime from Argentina. Blind tasting is the only way to determend the true value of a wine and you are doing an excelent job at it. You are funny. Unpretentious and just a joy to wathc. Keep up your good work.

Jay! Cheers from Brazil! Love your job and every video. Was thinking if you could do a “defy palate” tasting. Brazil produces 2 Pinot Noirs (Fvlvia, by Marco Danielle and Serena, by Mauricio Ribeiro) that most blind tasters believe to be French. Perhaps you could also put some Brazilian sparkling wines in the mix (like Maria Valduga) and some other wines from Era dos Ventos and blind taste them mixed with old world wines to try to figure which is which.

I just bought a 2014 brunello, i really wanna know if it tastes so bad compared to 2015/2016.

    • @Flinsenberger101

2014 Brunello is mostly horrible. Been to Montalcino 3 years ago, when they were new. Had a few which severely disappointed me. 10,12, 13, 15, 16, 17 are all decent to spectacular. But 14...better not risk it.
Doesn't mean it can't be decent when its from a competent producer.

@@df71091 Caparzo is pretty entry level Brunello. They are reliable, but rarely outstanding. That being said, cellartracker has the 2014 at 89.2, which is 1.5 points down from average vintages.

    Hey jae,
First of all, I love your content.
I'm not that experienced in wine, but i have had a specfic wine that is rather expensive and i found very different and interesseting and i would love to hear whalt you and peter think of it.
Have you ever heard of Chateau Chalon? it's a dessert wine also refered to as Yellow Wine. it has a strong nutty flavour due to being placed in only half filled barrels for many years, letting fungi grow over it.
I don't know if they are being sold near you, i'm from switzerland, so not too far from where it's produced, but I would love hearing your opinion on it.

Thanks for the video! I am a little surprised by the pricings of some of these wines though. Are these the prices paid during yours and Peter's trip to South Korea? I work at Krogers (grocery) in Ohio and excitedly noticed that not only do we sell some of these, but also cheaper than the price points in the video! Very excited to try the La Crema Monterey Pinot Noir for $16.99!!!!
