I watched these shows every week, read all his books. I worked at a historical iron forge here in PA and did traditional woodworking with all the antique planes and such.
I rebuild horsedrawn logging sleighs and a lot of this is very applicable. Working timber is working timber no matter what you are making. I work in oak and ash primarily. Watched this show as a kid!
I bet the guy who used to hand craft those mortises with just a chisel might look at that "machine" the same way as Roy looks at power tools? That confounded contraption! 18:21 And please tell those kids to STOP! For the love of God! lol

In the intro, it looks like he's walking through Durham, North Carolina -- which makes sense considering he studied there and early filming started there. The sign posts for US 15 and US 70 before the highway overpass was the definitive clue.

I never realized how hyper this guy was. I knew he had energy but watching it almost 3 decades later he seems a bit strung 😂
he is an idealist and a trained actor. he liked to think of his show as a one shot one act play. he didn’t want it to be tiny clips edited together. he always wanted to keep the audience engaged, and he also didn’t want to run out of time. he packed as much as possible into one episode, and i’m sure he rehearsed his pacing to be fast.
he is an amazing teacher/performer and knows how to connect with people that aren’t just wood workers.
Gotta love your home grown "power tools" squaring up the stock for you.
So Roy runs a child labor shop?? Tsk, tsk. 😂😂 In all seriousness, he is one of the best hand-tool teachers and I loved watching his shop back in the day.
I am an electrical contractor so work with all the other trades. My carpenter friend and I make jokes about Roy all the time. He will get out his fancy chop saw and I ask him where his broad ax is? If he needs a 2 by 4 but only has a 2 by 10 I hand him my razor knife and tell him to widdle it down like Roy does. Great show.

I see you burn to DVD first..I do the same here since this is an old computer that those USB capture devices dont work.
Your IOData GV-USB2 probably wont work either on this Dell.
You can save a step by just ripping the DVD to your computer then capture it the second time..There is plenty apps that do that.
Thank you for the suggestion. I use the dmr es 15 as a pass through to my capture card, I'm not burning anything to a disc (so 2000s....). I'm capturing from the back of the dmr es 15 for video, audio from the VCR itself, and I'll edit in avidemux to correct the audio sync.
