I was 5 years old, homeless with my mother, and I remember it. One day that summer, I was in an apartment to be watched while my mom tried to find work. I had gotten no breakfast that morning. The person watching me downtown had some peanut butter crackers that I could eat. I looked out the window and saw the high water level. My husband may not believe me, but everyone who was in St. Louis will still remember.

I was 4 years old when this happened. my mom worked for what used to be called chesterfield fire protection district and I have faint memories of the firehouse on long road in the valley being completely underwater. I remember seeing the flood water because we lived in chesterfield. fortunately our house was spared and it's my earliest memories.
thank you so much for this piece. I've already watched it twice it was really good

And to think a man still sits in prison presumably for the rest of his life accused of breaking a levee but real life scapegoat because if not vandalism the insurance companies would not have covered the peril

I live in a River town, I've seen this first hand, seen a levee break through an act of sabotage, and seeing the river completely flood into the Missouri side wiping out everything over there including thousands of acres of farmland.

Are you talking about the guy who ran his boat into the levee?

@randywoodworth5990 depending on the day, I was 11 or 12 when that happened. I remember watching it on the news, seeing the boat hit the levee and then watching it breach then expand. I always wondered why the guy was there in the first place. Like was it an accident? Was he trying to get to the edge for some reason to get out or take a shit? Now I know why. I remember the news saying they were looking for him, that's the last I remember. Closer to me was Hardin where the cemetery flooded and caskets started floating down the river

I was 23 and I remember it quite a bit differently than is being reported here 30 years later. Very sad. Seems this whole broadcast is a propaganda piece.
