Thank you, SDPB, for this commemoration, which is nicely done -especially in its ending on a positive note and with a wise warning against rebuilding on the floodplain. Rapid City's briiliant creekside park system really is the positive outcome of a terrible tragedy.
While this was difficult to watch (I lost a sister, her husband, and most of his family), I appreciate the story being told. Some of the stories I had not heard before. Everyone that was there has some story to tell. May this never happen again!
Only half of it was wiped my friend is old and told me about it. His dad was the first 3 story home to get completely submerged and wiped from the foundation.
Mayor Don Barnett lived right below us, I grew up w Robbie Corner, Tom Haggerty, Dr. Lytle, and so many more that lost family members, I remember my Dad and the neighbor going out in boats and finding bodies in trees, in their beds, etc. I remember turning on the radio on June 10th to the Missing Persons list, the list of the dead, and "Don't drink the water, Don't use your telelphone, we need the phone lines for emergency communication, no power for a week or more, I remember it all, the scare the next week when it started raining hard again... my neighbor getting married, and the flower shop, the tuxedo shop, the reception area, all washed away,... So me and some neighbors gathered flowers from our yards, the groom and groomsmen had all different plaid and striped suits, the reception was at their house and my mom made sandwiches for it.. It was beautiful.
It's terrible the destruction caused by hurricane Agnes I was also caught up in a catastrophic flood from that storm in Elmira, N.Y. Just shows how far reaching that storm affected the country. God bless Rapid City
My Uncle, Sgt. Bob Whitman, Army National Guard, died during Agnes, and I contracted typhoid. My hometown, Renovo, was hit hard, but not nearly as hard as the Wilkes-Barre area.
I was 12 years old. I remember it like yesterday, and have never forgot the warnings of how risky it is to live near any possible flood path along rivers, streams, oceans, etc. Please when you choose a place to live remember that God said not to build your house on the sandy land.. But to build it on the solid rock. I live in Florida now, and even here I have looked at many houses that were tempting, but too close to the ocean or even interior possible flooding in low-lying areas, so I skipped all of those houses when choosing what to buy.. so glad I did as Hurricane Ian wiped out many of those areas..
Excellent Movie Emotional though and Great Tribute Song Rapid City is a Beautiful Town I'm a Rapid Citian but I wasn't even around when the Flood Happened but I Read about the Flood
My family visited there the year before in our little camper. I was just out of the third grade. I can't remember much except that the water was freezing where ever we camped but we visited a cool indoor pool with a slide and hanging rings to swing from. I heard survived the flood.
It seems like I was born in a disaster and so disasters became part of my everyday life. As a child, seeing death tolls from the hurricanes and watching tornadoes all the time, I wonder why I am living after being burnt 100% of my body. Well I got my questions answered. People must see what you can live through when you have God in your life everyday
I wasn't around when the Flood happened I read about the Flood when I was at the Library hanging out and reading books the Black Hills Flood was a terrible Flood I have Friends that remember the Black Hills Flood I do remember the 1988 Westberry Trails Fire

My grandpa and his best friend worked straight through with no breaks to get communication back up. He worked for Pa Bell back when men were men.
Richard P. Dahlman and Michael J. Bergstresser are their names.
Mike Henriksen brought us here. Shout out to Mike for great HONEST reporting.
It's been a long time since I've remember this well put together things
My moved to RC in the summer of ‘73. They were still rebuilding in some areas. The neighborhood (northeast) we lived was untouched.

In June of 1972 Pennsylvania was also hit with major flooding. This came from Hurricane Agnes. The worst flooding for Pennsylvania to this date.
My Uncle, Sgt. Bob Whitman, Army National Guard, died during Agnes, and I contracted typhoid. My hometown, Renovo, was hit hard, but not nearly as hard as the Wilkes-Barre area.
I remember we was in moberly Missouri I was just a little girl it was horrifying and my dad used to help rescue people 😢
I was 14 years old & was living with my aunt & uncle on the north side of town-Herman St. I never knew there was a flood until the next morning.
Do you know the last name (Bill)Blair or (Mary)Niehaus?

Wow I guess floods are thank goodness you made the God must have been with you
So why wasn’t god with all the people who did die? Why so arbitrary?
@@mirrage42 ... Don't you know? They must have been the bad people.
Just ask any zealot.
Or judge.
Flood of 72 casting shadow over you
