If anyone understands how difficult it is to go from an airy whisper note into a rich, colorful one can understand how fascinating it is to listen to Ms. Houston. She does dynamics so well, and you can hear how soft and warm her voice is in the beginning. She ascends into this metallic sound and then descends quickly into a warm one in the blink of an eye. She does so many magical things between the notes that create something so ethereal.
I will NEVER forget when I 1st heard this woman's voice back in 1985. I was watching a video show called New York Hot Traks and they debuted the video for "You Give Good Love", The announcer said and I will never forget "This lady is gonna be huge", He was right. I followed Whitney from that point till now, I was lucky to see and hear her during her great years but I was still a fan during the not so good years. A truly amazing singer, still can't believe she is gone.

No one understands how incredible her dynamic control was. It’s one of her specialities as a spinto soprano. She employed it in every phrase, and even though they’re so subtle, they are crucial to the meaning of the song. She sings from a gentle whisper to a metallic belt in a second. It’s absolutely profound and magical.

The most beautiful part is the soft notes that she sings with the breath of a whisper, the in between space just before the voice will cut off and she controls it so beautifully. This is just a practice she tore it up when she had to sing it live, and then she sung it different than she did in practice. That is what you call singing from your heart. Each time she sings a song it's an original. Never duplicated by herself, that is another thing that sets her apart. I have heard many female vocalists try to stray from the record and make it sound original like Celine and Mariah and they can't pull it off with the same conviction and assurety as Mrs. Houston. No offense to the other singers. The way she harmonizes with her backup singers and then come out of harmony to do lead then fall back into harmony, it's delicious to the ears, simply amazing. She always finds that sweet spot with the missing voice and hits it no matter who she is singing with.

I am a HUGE Whitney, Mariah, Christina, & Celine fan (Whitney is my fav). One of the things that makes Ms. Houston stand out to me is her phrasing. She really knows HOW to sing. Even now that she doesn't have the range she did back then (she was never a 1st soprano, jus a 2nd soprano & 1st alto w/ a really nice extended range or falsetto; now she's just an alto with a nice falsetto)
Omg...I don't even listen to gospel, but Whitney moves me SO much here. Especially the official live version. Wow.

BEST singer of all time. Honestly, she has no peer. Barbra, Mariah, Celine etc just don't have Whitney's complete package. She had the most beautiful, sweet tone. Incredible resonance and fully supported belts in mid register. Best head voice. Superb melismas and vibrato. Perfect diction of every word. Mastery and complete control of her voice from lower to upper registers. What really set her apart was not any of those things. It was her ability to interpret a song and to sing it in such a way as to always attach it to the heart, soul and spirit of the listener. Her ability to emote is unmatched. Her confidence on live performance is on another plane from the others. She was anointed and she knew it. I can hear and appreciate all the others. Whitney is thr only one that I always feel. She's the only one that I stop what I'm doing to listen to because I know that in one second or one note, she can reach a place that it's impossible for the others to reach. Honestly, in her prime, from 85 to 94, she was not only without peer, but nobody else could hold a candle to her.

If u listen to "O Come, O Come Emanuel" on Whitney's Last Christmas album, One Wish: The Holiday Album, U can hear how her voice has changed, but also how she's adapted to that change. It really does sound wonderful. That was the song that made me realize that she's still one of the baddest sangers ever! ;D

Its true,you dont know what you've got til its gone..i was just reintroduced to WH's music. I used to LOVE Cinderella when i was a kid & growing up,she wasnt relevent in my life. Looking back,its like a punch in the gut. RIP angel.
Whitney has the voice of an angel. She sung her songs. She didn't lipsing like they do now adays.

Very true hey, I always knew Whitney had The Voice but I didn't know how powerful until I started listening to her LIVE recodings. I honestly thing the CDs didn't do her voice any justice at all. Now I can't listen to anything of hers except if it's LIVE.

Beautiful song. Its always a pleasure to hear a great voice. This song reminded me of the Bodyguard theme (only slightly), but love the gospel feel to this one. When her voice cracked early on, I was worried, but the rest of it was beautiful. Also loved how Whitney was directing while she sang (backup singers stop at the wave of her hand).
The title of this song is 'This Day.' This song was originally recorded by Jennifer Holliday back in 1983 as the closing song on her debut album, 'Feel My Soul.' The song was written by Edwin Hawkins, the Father of Contemporary Gospel Music. Whitney does a wonderful job, wish she had recorded this on an LP.

Vocal technique, beauty and accomplishments aside. There is something that Whitney Houston has which NO OTHER diva possesses, and that is soul. Whitney Houston's voice comes from somewhere else, it is never "put on", never fabricated, its always genuine and that's why people are so moved by her performances. If for no other reason, this is why she is the greatest female, popular music vocalist. Period.
