  • It's hard to reflect on #michelleyeoh 's history-making #oscars win without thinking about Zhang Ziyi, who co-starred with Michelle in #crouchingtigerhiddendragon and Memoirs of Geisha where she played the lead role Sayuri. During the 2000s, Ziyi was arguably the most famous Chinese actress having A-list status in Hollywood.
If she had taken on as many #hollywood movies like Michelle did over the years and focused more on filmmaking in the United States, rather than her home country in China, Zhang Ziyi could very well have won one of the top awards. So why did she take a step back from Hollywood? What has she been up to? You will find all the details, both about her movie career as well as her relationship history and family life, in this video. Michelle Yeoh definitely has longevity on her side. She persevered through the years and it paid off.

Ziyi is a great dramatic actress but Yeoh is more versatile. Both great but very different type of actresses.

Winning the Oscar doesn’t mean you are the "best", there are so many "best" actresses that didn’t win an Oscar.

What is there to win when she wins the hearts of billions? That is more important than any award from Hollywood.

Great point @generaldecker9971 and I'm glad that you still remember her, when most people seem to have moved onto the younger stars and whoever is hot in the news everyday.

I found this video a little to condescending, praising Ziyi so much while dragging Michelle in the process, and i don’t think its ok to do that, maybe both actresses had different opportunities or ways to achieved success, but at the end of the day, the hard work, the talent and perseverance paid the bills.

Appreciate and respect your opinion, Natalia. And that's why we love open forums like this on social media. My goal was to bring more awareness to other Chinese actresses who deserve more attention from Hollywood and hopefully Michelle's Oscars win won't be the last one of such for women like her...

zzy could NEVER win an Oscar, because her English wasn't that good.
Li Bing Bing's + even Gong Li's English were far superior.

Yeah, if you hear them in interviews, you can see how fluent Michelle is at English. The others can memorize a line, practice with a dialect coach, but you will still notice how their English doesn't flow as smoothly as Michelle, who knows idiomatic phrases, and can make a moving speech all in English.

Li Bing Bing studied uber hard for her English, + @ a time much older than zzy.
Li's English is more fluent than zzy.
(English + Malay were Michelle's first languages; when she started her career in Hong Kong,
her Cantonese, which she learned phonetically, also was very good, as in her film, EEAAO.)

@@lissandrafreljord7913 exactly! Michelle knows to use different expressions in her interviews. Lots of idioms and phrases that you would normally expect from a native English speaker

Sure, Zhang Ziyi definitely could have tried harder to learn English, and obviously Michelle has the native advantage of growing up speaking English plus all the elite education she's received. If we just look at acting talents, WDYT?

But she can learn. English is only a tool right? Jackie Chan isnt good at English either.
