  • Flying the Bonanza to Russia did not go as expected. We crossed the ocean in a small plane, dealt with inflight icing, and I've never been happier to hand fly an instrument approach to minimums in pouring rain at midnight.

I was hoping that those basics were just being left out of the video, but apparently not if no one told him about even basic legal and entry issues. :-/ Europeans often take a dim view of American presumption, and this seems like one fairly good example of why. Experienced aircraft ferrying pilots are well aware of these potential issues and how to plan for this type of adventure. Train, be mentored, then fly the route.

His entry into Russia via the airport was not illegal. The problem was crossing the water on the ferry to the town, which was in a "closed" part of Russia (that was not some military zone). I can't really think of any equivalent scenario in the U.S. or most other countries except maybe flying into China and then trying to cross into Tibet without the additional travel permits. I guess once Brexit finally goes through, the same thing could happen if you flew into Europe legally, landed at an airport in the Republic of Ireland and unknowingly took a cab into Northern Ireland.

I'm an international student in Russia. I have been for almost four years. Russian bureaucracy. Two words. Of course those who came before you also broke the law. But there are a lot of reasons why they might not have been treated like you were. After previous visits, it's possible the immigration officers got into trouble with their supervisors and in your case, needed to throw the whole book at you. It's possible different staff were working on the day… Anything. Russian migration law is complicated, for example, you can't cross the road/railway border with Belarus unless you are a Belarusian or Russian citizen. Under Russian law you can go to Crimea with no special permission - but from a Ukrainian perspective you'll be entering the country illegally and risk being denied entry/visas or prison. The far east is a special zone. Yes :(
I will say this, Russia has introduced free evisas for a few cities and regions and plans to expand the scheme for the whole country which should make visiting Russia easier.
Although I'm not Russian, it wasn't easy to watch. I'm sorry it worked out that way. But rules are rules. The people who live here have to deal with them every day!

They almost always have a lot of border guards working, I've never waited longer than 10 minutes for the entire process, no big lines. Both Matt and his team and the local police (now looking more closely, not border guards) were obviously not prepared for their visit.

I flew across Russia twice in small planes with no problems except they did make me shoot the ILS at Anadyr on a clear day. Here's how. Get a flight handler. They line up border crossings, fuel, hotels and customs for you. There will always be an English speaker to meet you and take you where you need to go to get through customs and security. I have met and had lunch and dinner with the controllers and they are all excellent and very friendly people. Even the security guys were personable- "Are you carrying any guns? The correct answer is no." I think they were a little freaked because they didn't know you and you filed over towards the end of their day. A flight handler would have been a known representative for you. Nome weather is really unpredictable. Foggy all day and then suddenly patchy blue. They always make you go on the airway over 400 miles of Pacific Ocean, Bering Air started that.. G 212 was what they called it. Always ice somewhere in Russia, I had a lot of it. Once you get inside farther people start helping you out if there's an issue. Spent a year studying and teaching English in Russia (American). I have visited many times since, never once did I feel unsafe or unwelcome. If you decide to pull juvenile stunts like this one here in ANY country's sovereign airspace, especially without going through the correct bureaucratic processes, you will be in hot water.

Kind of dramatic but you didn't have the right permit, your responsibility, not anyone else.
    Overall an interesting production.

Watching this from the outside, it sounds like the police gave you the benefit of the doubt that you arrived without the special permit without knowing. For that reason they let you wait it out in your hotel. Beats prison.
