On the second example the shim doesn't even penetrate the lock to release the bolt. Besides it would take two in order to work for that particular lock

None of these actually work. The closest thing to actually workable is the jar lid shim. Funny thing is, if you look at the shackle on the lock used to demonstrate this technique, it was one of these locks with two latches requiring two shims and he's only using one.

The jar lid shim is the closest thing to anything that might work, but jar lids are too thick for most locks. A soda can works great, though.
