For me, I think we are going to see the SNP struggle in both elections between now and the general after next - Then we are going to see 4 years of the most right wing, business friendly, ineffective labour government we have seen in my lifetime and the independence movement in Scotland is going to rebound so hard. Keir Starmer won't be the man that loses Scotland for the UK, but he'll be why.

    • @blackislepeas

Pretty much agree, but I think the 4 years may possibly be 8 and in a way I don't think that that would be too bad, there'll be a lot of upset in the Nationalist movement which will take a while to settle before any serious planning, which must be done rather than just glossy brochures, can create and communicate an effective roadmap.

Considering the last poll put the SNP winning 48 of Scotlands 57 seats I dont think it will make a difference. Support for independence has consistently been over 50% for a while now in the polls so despite people jumping to conclusions, independence is going nowehere and I dont think the SNP are either.
So many seem to think it will eventually dissapear, these people need to look at the demographics and realise that only voters 60+ support the union, as age decreases support for independence rise dramatically.

There are literally no polls putting the SNP on 48 seats. Even their own strategy announced last autumn was 29 seats implying they expect to lose 20. There are loads of SNP MPs standing down most of whom have only been MPs since 2019 or 2015. It's unheard of.

These two (the English commentators), are really showing their ignorance about Scottish politics. For them to say that Independence will probably not happen in their lifetime!? What!? Maybe they should keep an eye on the polls for independence, and more importantly the polls for young people who are in favour of Independence by approx 70%. It will happen, and very likely to be in the next decade or so.

Just a thought, the next decade or so may just be the limit of their lifetime - not that I wish ill to them. BTW 50/50? There are four countries in the union.
Scotland, despite not voting Tory since the 1950s has been saddled with the policies of a government they would not vote for - hence the drive for independence. The government in Scotland is still hobbled by the Tory austerity ideology, despite having very limited (thank you Labour for your vetoes because you thought it would make the government look bad as it is forced to use solely income tax to replace the 4 billion deficit that was enforced on them by the Tories) taxation powers.

It'd be like an EU version of Britain. That way, tradewise and financiall, we would be still be in the same position but then Scotland can just feel like a separate country.

Independence has been dead since 2014. The SNP only gain office because the Nationalist vote isn't split and just enough to get into office over Union parties & unlike union parties who's vote has been split..but there is simply not enough support beyond that to leave the UK economy (because thats what "independence" means) and readjust the Scottish economy with oversight from Brussels to take the euro in a decade or two. So the SNP are in a loop of doom, having to obsess over leaving the UK (to the detriment of health, education etc..) but never being able to deliver. Moving forward the SNP vote is now split (ALBA) so i expect the future to have more union parties in govmt, the SNPs best days are behind them, at 17 years its been a long run. Ultimately ending in failure & of corse the Union survives.

No one has to take the Euro but even if Scotland did take the Euro in a couple of decades, whats the problem? It works for the rest of the EU. Scotland has a far better health service and educational systems. than England, fact. In the EU Scotland would have a seat at the table and an equal voice which it doesn't within the UK. Lastly Independence is normal and of all the countries that broke free from the British yoke, they are all doing better and not one wants to return.

You may think philosophically BUT the real test is whether the public / electorate see a real benefit. The SNP and Independence are toast thanks to the total lack of ability and preparation by the SNP over the last 17 years. Scotland now has a £ 20 + BILLION budget deficit which has to be funded and there has been no real improvement in both internal and export market infrastructures, health, education and local services. The SNP have ironically set themselves up to be 'governed' by the very party they trashed - the Greens. The Greens will not accept Kate, the older SNP will not accept Salmond/Regan, so the 'favourite' at the moment is Swinney as he's acceptable to the Greens !
