Thanks, Steve and Kevin. Kevin, for always the great info and how the good communicator he is. Steve, your interviews keep getting better! By not asking again and again the same questions, extracting new info and being so respectful, allowing the guests to freely speak and feeling at ease. Great conversation!

@@stevewestman7774 in fact I just subscribed. Looking forward to watching more from you, keep up the great work! I’m relatively fresh to the vinyl scene, but adore the format. I had been hesitant to invest due to the nature of endless and pointless remastering on cd, figuring all new vinyl would be the same. But these kind of channels on RUclips have given me the kind of information lacking from the industry. So thanks for your part!

It's funny what Kevin said about the early (80's) CD's which tended to use copy tapes that had been EQ'd for vinyl. I actually think that those CD's sound good for precisely that reason - they are what we are accustomed to hearing.

Great interview Steve. So many tidbits of information and history. What a great guy and yes it will cost me. I would still like to understand the tools he uses and how. Of course he mentions EQ but how does he do this for specific instrument / vocal if he has the stereo mix? And what other tools are at his disposal to tailor the sound?

3-4 hours doesn't sound like enough time to actually listen to everything and ensure there are no problems. I think that explains why his masters have so much distortion and sibilance. I doubt he's actually listening to the whole thing before shipping it. And the fact he doesn't listen to his masters in headphones at all, even just to check it, is also very telling.

Steve so enjoy your interviewing style, but late to the party. Is this your first interview with Kevin Gray? I hear his name so much, in so many conversations, so I wanted to hear all about the man! From the off! Would this be the intro video?? Very interesting talk from Kevin on the 1/2 speed remastering and the cons especially, and why he doesn't endorse it .Also that the percentage of remasters Kevin is doing now, is very much cut from analogue? Or did I mishear?? Also very interesting discussion about PCM v DSD. By the way. Does hitting the "like" button on video's even a year after ago, help the channel??

Love the talk! Just wanted to chime in about the German engineer Gray trained, which he notes in the beginning of the interview.
The engineer is Sidney Claire Meyer ("SCM" in the runout) at Emil Berliner Studios. Of note is her work on Hiroshi Suzuki's "Cat" and Ryo Fukui's "Letter From Slowboat." Blown away by her work here. I got up out of my chair on the bass solo on Suzuki's "Kuro To Shiro." Utterly convincing.
