Easy interview... just let Bernie talk. Great stories about his mastering experiences. We are very lucky he's still working so hard to bring tasty sounds to our ears.
Bernie Grundman is a legend. I've been seeing his name on stuff I've owned since as long as I've been buying music. It's almost impossible to believe that he was even a real person.
Awesome interview Chad, and thank you Bernie for all you’ve done for us over your career. I can’t wait to start hearing these lp’s as soon as they come out. And Bernie you really need to write a book about your career, there’s a lot of us who’d love to know your story as well as the stories of other great legends in the audio industry. Thanks again fellas!
Oh boy! I'm looking forward to watching this, Bernie describes thigs so easy to understand! I hope he has a very long life and lives to be 100 and beyond! Love ya Bernie, keep up the good work!
excellent video Chad. Thank you for documenting this. Bernie is so great at what he does, and providing all the history on what happened back in the day.
I loved the video. You can see the passion of both these men as they discuss there next project of the Contemporary Series coming soon. It is Great to see Chad's reaction to Bernie's story telling. Chad reacts with a smile and nod just as I did when I watched this entire video . My order went in as soon as it was announced. Well Done Gentlemen! Stay SAFE.
Funny how Chad didn't know about the Art Pepper mono version Craft did for RSD, it's also supposed to be pressed at QRP too. The Stereo cut in the Acoustic Sounds series isn't scheduled to come out until November.
How wonderful to hear your Story, I enjoyed this , I have been an Electronics Engineer , Hi fi Buff for many years, my 1st Job in Nov 1994 was for Dolby Labs in Wootton Bassett , repairing the Dolby A circuits Modules for reel to reel tapes & Film industry, in 1989 , when CD was the becoming the new music format as in uk singles were being released on CD Vinyl & cassette, a guy on one of my Local Radio stations from " High Town Audio " Crewe show told the interviewer Vinyl would still be a a format for Music lovers, & over the years I upgraded my Hi Fi so today I enjoy picking up particular Old ( and new) Lp's some from the 50's & 60's sound amazing Even the mono copies, the likes of Geoff Love, Count Basie & Kay Star, too many to mention ... ! for example, picked up a Greatest hits of Brazil 66 Lp mint ...amazing
Great to find this! I'm always happy to see Bernie's name on an album I want to purchase. I just know it's going to sound great. It's a bonus to see that he's a stand up guy.
I listen to these interviews at 1.5 speed Bernie’s voice sounds so spritely and very soothing at that speed After hours jazz club at 19 and hanging with the musicians. So glad Bernie followed his loved and gave his refine every detail creation to us. Love how Bernie saw his future, knew who to contact at a professional level even at a young age (and from his appreciation of that music) and was willing to work for a dime. Albums the didn’t make the cut sitting on the shelf? Wow Great interview, Thank you both! What a joy!
Could listen to Bernie Grundman talk for hours. Great stories and insight to some wonderful history and times! What a life! Cheers to the Contemporary reissues! Hope we get some not so often or never done titles also!
Thank you Chad and Bernie for this video, loved the Stories and can't wait to buy Art Pepper and the rhythm section. I was hoping you might be able to answer this one question, should I buy the mono or stereo pressing? I will only buy one of them. Cheers and thanks for all the great sounding music!
I first started noticing a unique and really interesting sound in the early 80s when I got one country LP. It was really contagious and later I found out who he was and also he did many mastering for Japanese singers namely Yumi Matsutoya...
When mastering engineers get older and become senior citizens, do they have to get hearing tests on a regular basis? And if their hearing starts to get worse, do they then retire, or try to stick it out until the end?
I think that’s a great question. I don’t have an answer, but it makes me think about concerts I’ve been to where the sound engineer must be hard of hearing because the highs, which are the first to go in your hearing, are way off.
Over the years of talking with Bernie he's told me how careful he's treated his ears by not going to many concerts, and if he did - making sure to wear ear plugs. One listen to these Contemporary records and the Jimi Hendrix Axis: Bold As Love and Are You Experienced UHQRs will prove to you that he's still on top of his game! He's not one of the most famous mastering engineers for no reason.
This was awesome!!! This guy is a legend and to hear his wonderful stories behind the music is special for us music lovers. Please do an interview with him about his work on your recent Are You Experienced ...Jimi Hendrix Experience UHQR which I just ordered. I am sure you would have lot of interested fans. This one made me subscribe. Thank you.
And to this day, the MC30 is still a coveted amplifier. Looking forward to the Contemporary series. I have Art Pepper + 11 on order. Any chance we'll see Benny Golson's New York Scene? OR how about a Shelly Manne & His Men At the Black Hawk box set? Those would be amazing!!!
@@gotham61 Yes, I have the 5 volume CD set. It's fantastic and would make an amazing vinyl box set. I don't usually buy box sets or recordings I already have digital copies of, but I'd make an exception for this one.
I was recently separating the best sounding records that I bought some years ago when I new nothing about vinyl. As I’m setting the good ones aside would you believe I started noticing they all had the tiny BG initials. After listening I turned on RUclips and this video was cued up. 😃👍👍
It was a RUclips video with a Japanese man who had a record store, he had received a master tape from the Beatles, he played the same song both on vinyl and and on real to real tape. Then he said Paul McCartney should sound like he sounds on this real on real to real tape not like he sounds on the vinyl record or on CD.N. He probably meant how the voice itself sounds. and he thought his master tape that had been received sounded better
There are soooo many great titles other than the usual classic Contemporary suspects. These go for expensive prices on the secondary market also. So I know the market is hot for these also. My hopes: Prince Lasha Quintet Featuring Sonny Simmons- The Cry (mentioned by Chad) Curtis Counce Group titles (awesome stuff) Art Pepper -No Limit (great Pepper album!) Joe Gordon Looking Good! (incredible album) Jimmy Woods titles How about all four of the Shelly Manne Live At The BlackHawk Volumes? ( you kiddin me? that would sell like hotcakes as a box set or indiviudal titles) How about some Eddie "Lockjaw" with Shirley on organ titles?
I knew Bernie's name for years. This name appears on some vinyl covers. by Frank Zappa. I understand given the quality of the master. everyone wants to work and ensure the master's degree by bernie.
If I buy an album regardless of format, I want it to sound as close to the master tape as possible. if you, for example, change the voice of the artist with EQ, then you cannot call it original because then you have changed the sound On the artist's voice. imagine if someone could make a copy without using IQ or Other form of Processing. The only people who do it are ordinary private individuals, right? . observe the ultimate Vore that the artist's voice sounds like in real life so that I can recognize the artist's voice if I meet the artist in real life
I don’t really know who Chad is but aren’t these two guys contemporaries that do the same thing mastering albums? Bernie seems way more knowledgeable for some reason.
A “very [white] American story” you mean. The story of opportunity. That story would’ve stopped right where it started (riding into a shop on a scooter) if you were Black. Heck, you probably wouldn’t have gotten that far even.
@@jcbrooklyn4800 The music is Black; And I do enjoy it very much. You can’t divorce Jazz or American history from it’s social or racial context, no matter how hard you’d like to.

Jazz (and it’s foundation, the Blues) was created by Black Americans and all of it’s founders and most legendary practitioners have been Black Americans. Dude, we know that blacks were not given the same opportunities back then especially. It sucks. My grandfather came from Sicily and owned a mechanic garage and bar and worked very hard. It doesn't take away from Bernie's drive and knowledge of this business!
There was strange mixing in this video Bernie talking in both speakers but Chad he only talks on the right speaker . Must Michael Fremer. come and learn how to record video with good stereo image. He usually makes videos with good sound When he visits a vinyl factory or something else that has to do with sound or music 😅
Huge fan of bernie's superb mastering work. try to seek a US original of MJ thriller. up till today im still amazed at how amazing it sounds. even though thriller is the final track on side 1, theres hardly any sibilance or distortion but plenty of bass and punch. thanks mr grundman 🎶🎵🎼🎹🎧🎚🎛

Herb Alpert is one amazing human being and so are these two guys. What great testimonies to passion and the belief in themselves!

George Martin famously had his son Giles help. I suspect Bernie has a person who works with him.

As a matter of a fact he did, around 2000. He remastered the whole LZ back catalog for classic records from the original master tapes.

Liked how the art pepper confused Chad. Think his mike is faulty.
