    Chopped very small all-natural beef hot dog pieces. This is the most high-value treat, but we use it sparingly since it's not as healthy as the training treats and kibble.

      I would like to know if you have any opinions regarding neutering your dog? Mine behaves exactly as you described it (once outside the house he wants to fight everyone that gets close). I have trained him, but I think that the training will be most efficient once neutered. (Just asking for opinions). Thanks ☺️

    Leash pulling, do the same thing you're doing with the barking, walk a few steps, even just one, then click and reward for not pulling, make sure they're moving when you treat. Also as soon as they start pulling stop and wait until they stop, then go again. Or if that doesn't work, instead of stopping, turn direction. Start with low distraction environments, inside, backyard, front yard, your own street, then slowly increase distractions as they get better.

    The leash training is simple, put a leash on him while inside your home when your home. Let him drag the leash around so he steps on it, pulls on gets stuck and it allows the dog to see it’s no threat. When he gets use to that hold the leash and pull in it and ask him to come and when he’s on command give him the treat when he comes to you. Next, use this method outside in a safe area where he can’t run off or injure himself with the leash and be outside with him. Do the same method and reward him when he comes on the leash. When you feel he is not pulling or fighting the leash as much or anymore take him for a walk. If he fights the leash when walking stop at a leash distance and call him on command and when he obeys you simply reward him.

    HIgh function positive instruction. Thanks. I use a water spray bottle. I say NO BARK in strong voice. I never look at him when I spray him I aim vicariously and put my attention away from him..He just knows that for some reason when he barks he gets sprayed with water. Than I leave the spray water bottle on the table where he can see it. It takes 2 days or less to train him. I know I am a cruel Mom; but it works.

    Greetings from England! Thank for your advice, Ernie looks adorable! So, I actually have two mini schnauzers, Edwin and Max. Edwin is 11 years old and rarely barks with the exception of joggers, he sees them as a threat I guess. Max, a puppy at just 20 weeks, constantly barks at anything that moves, I mean to the point where I become stressed too! I am off to our pet shop right now to buy a clicker (an E-collar is my last choice!). Thanks again, so really good advice.

    So I’m assuming if they do bark you just keep going. Obviously you have to catch them really quickly. I do notice that my daughters schnauzer barks more in the territory of their apartment complex then on walks. I’m not sure you can prevent that entirely. AND she growls like your doggy, which I find adorable!

    • @MeerkatsAreCool
      @MeerkatsAreCool  3 года назад +3

      Yeah keep going or away from the person they’re barking at. The training works best if you can keep as much of a distance from people as possible bc when you first start, the dog will still react to anyone who is within a certain distance (this distance depends on the dog). But- after doing this training for awhile (I’d say it was a few weeks for us) Ernie doesn’t even bark at people who walk right by us (most of the time).
      However...he is still reactive to people in our apartment complex and our upstairs and downstairs neighbors just like your daughters dog. He is so territorial that this training didn’t completely remedy that. But he’s great on walks through our neighborhood, hikes, and the park! I don’t usually have to even use this training anymore, as he’s used to not barking during these activities. Love the growls too! So cute 🥰

    He's adorable! We have a 1 year old mini schnauzer who is great.... apart from his barking when people walk past the house. I know he does it during the day when we aren't home. I like this idea for when we are near him. Not sure it'll help with our day time barking issue. I really don't want to resort to a shock collar.

    We have a Mini Schnauzer and having a difficult time with getting the correct size harness for her. She knows exactly how to stop and back up and remove it. What is the one your Schnauzer is using?

    • @MeerkatsAreCool
      @MeerkatsAreCool  3 года назад

      The one he wears now is a size small Joyride harness. We mostly like it, but if he’s wearing it for a couple hours, the strap around his chest starts to loosen. We just make sure to tighten and check that strap before we put it on him. I’m thinking there may be a better option out there though than this brand bc he’s slipped out of it a couple times when it was loose.

    • @MeerkatsAreCool
      @MeerkatsAreCool  3 года назад +1

      Aww poor baby! We have some trouble with leash pulling too and haven’t fully resolved it yet. When Ernie sees a squirrel or a friend he just pulls so hard and doesn’t listen at all. He also pulls on walks but I usually can get it under control by saying “walk with me” and treating him when he walks with a loose leash and saying “no” and stopping when he pulls. I don’t always have to energy to stop every time he pulls though, as it can make the walk take so long. I’m hoping to hire a trainer after the holidays to work on pulling and recall. Will def share any good tips I get there! Your situation is a bit different since it sounds like your pup is pulling away from something and not towards it.

    • @edithoh4543
      @edithoh4543 3 года назад

      MeerkatsAreCool Yes. I have a lot of work ahead of me with her. She’s finally is starting to enjoy walks. She used to shake and tremble when I would put her harness on because she knew she was about to go outside. I didn’t have the opportunity to socialize her enough when she was a puppy because we adopted her as a very sick girl. Then she couldn’t get vaccinated right away which opened her up to get sick again.

    • @canujita

      Try the slip rope leash 5 feet long. Put very high on the neck, close to his ears. That way it won't choke him. Keep the leash loose but close to you. Your arm relax. And control the dog beside you or behind, never on front of you.

    • @MeerkatsAreCool
      @MeerkatsAreCool  3 года назад +1

      So the training worked halfway for us. It got him to stop barking at people and dogs on walks and parks away from home (yay!). But it didn’t work at home or right around the apartment...he loves barking at our upstairs and downstairs neighbors, which we can’t seem to stop. We did end up getting a ultra sonic device that makes a high pitched sound only dogs can hear that we use on demand if he’s barking at someone in our apartment complex. Thanks for the tip on the vibration collar - schnauzers certainly love barking 💕 Will make an update video soon to talk about his progress.

    • @rajm3496
      @rajm3496 3 года назад

      @@MeerkatsAreCool great. The ultrasonic device works, but with the bark, it’s easier for them to associate the barking with the vibration so much so that, after a few months, you won’t even need the collar. This is what I read online. I have a 3 month old female

Schnauzers are notorious for barking so I think it's going to be more challenging compared to other dogs. I take my pup to training and out of all the dogs, she's the only one that barks. I think it's time to bring out the clicker and give it another shot. She does behave but when she starts barking and really goes for it, I can't get her attention anymore.
