Just love my 83 vf 1100 magna .went on a short ride across Canada that took 7 weeks through Ontario,Detroit,Carmi Illinois ,up through the Dakotas ,Montana ,Edmonton Alberta,Lake Louise and back through Montana ,Milwakee,Chicago,Detroit ,and back to Montreal 7400 Miles later and speedo up at 60,000+ miles is still running strong ..Might have to change the clutch plates in a while but an awesome first bike ( Im 63 ) who said old guys dont rock lol
did similar ride min 83 when my sons mom passed. spend 32 days rode 3600 miles through center and upper US. 63 years old this April. Building my V45 Magna back and riding the shit out of it. Have fun man. Ride and enjoy life while we have it.....
It takes many hours for me to rebuild an engine because I am a perfectionist. Prepping for the build is the hardest part, I use a dremel with 425 polishing wheels to clean all the mating surfaces, it does an amazing job. I get the valves and seats redone while I am at it. The actual build is not hard. Take lots of pictures of dis-assembly.
Clean the pistons thoroughly, they will be caked with carbon. Make sure all mating surfaces are super clean. You will just have to inspect all the parts. You are almost guaranteed to find worn transmission gears and shifting forks. The rings have to go on a certain way.
Not single, she actually helps me rebuild motors. She refers to everything as a doohickie or a thingamabob but she knows what the different parts do. lol I built a shop over the spring so I don't have to bring them in here anymore.
I got most of them on Ebay. I used all different rods, pistons, crank and bearings. I put a single line oil mod on it and it ate up the bearings. I should have listened to Dave Dodge. I now have a proper drill and tap.
I have never did a rebuild on anything but have always wanted to do it wether it be a car or bike.I just rebuilt the starter clutch on my v tonight and i found a small amount of milky substance in the oil and it was on the crankcase cover as well.I thought it was coolant but i have never lost in or added to it so im stumped. It runs well for 41000 miles and no second gear issues or anything.I live in Ga where and how do i start to tackle this project.
Put the gear next to the gear on the left and to the starter on the right, push up on the idler gear and make the starter turn clockwise, once the hole lines up stick the dowel pin back in.
hey i love your videos man. the Magnas were AHEAD of thier time. and maybe if you see this you can offer some insight. Iam very mechanically inclined and Im doing a rebuild of my 84 VF700. same layout as yours just smaller. i spun a rod bearing. I have been assembling and re-disassembling my motor. this video at 0:27 shows the internal shift lingage. the arms, the shift rod(to foot pedal i dont know its correct term) the shift drum star. on mine i can use the long shift arm(to foot pedal) and go from 2nd up to 6th(od) and back down. i can use the arm and go from 1st into Neutral. BUT once iam in neutral i cannot use the arm (to foot pedal) to get OUT of neutral this is sitting on my work bench because of this. now if i put a socket or wrench on the star i can go through all gears. but with the linkage its NO movement to 1st or even second. and iam chasing my tale on this. if ANYONE has any insight please help. i dont want to button this thing up install it back on the bike to find i cant go VROOM. thank you
I am sorry, I don't check this channel much anymore. I am about to do a total engine rebuild on a friends V65 and i might video tape it. Did you get your issue resolved?
@@MagnaVision2010 yes I did. It was the most rearward spring at the shift "star" even though it was in there had to use a screw driver and pry it back a bit. So the cam would ride properly in the shift drum cam star. Hope that makes sense. And looking forward to your video of v65 rebuild. I just got one from a buddy, he's got a second v65 that needs some work, and the one he gave me is payment.
half of those places are in america lol.. im buying a 84 750 magna, my dad is getting a 83.. im 18 and his 46 we want to go from vancouver canada down to palm springs (florida i think?) and all over canada :) hopefully this summer if we get time off work
i'd like to rebuild the engine on my bike too (when i get the cash together). sure would be nice to have someone who has rebuilt this type of engine before to get pointers. i have an 83 v65 magna vf1100c just turned today 6-26-16 20k runs good but i think it could be better
I USED TO HAVE A 1983, V65 MAGNA. I DON'T KNOW WHY I GOT RID OF IT. IT WAS RUNNING, WHEN I DID. I PUT IT ON CRAIGSLIST FOR 2 YEARS, BEFORE I GOT RID OF IT, FOR JUST ABOUT WHAT I PAID FOR IT. IT WAS A STRONG RUNNING BIKE. AND HONDA SMOOTH TOO. BELT DRIVE, GEAR INDICATOR, ALWAYS LIFTED THE FRONT WHEEL OFF, JUST WITH THROTTLE. WHAT MORE COULD YOU ASK FOR IN A BIKE.
The bike had about 25K on it when I rebuilt the motor. It now has about 34K. You do need a special tool but you can make one like I did. If you are interested I can go out to the shop and get the size of the socket you need to modify.
Hey man, is there Anyway you Can repost the video you did awhile back called v45 magna head tensioner- cam install rebuild back up because RUclips pulled it because of a copyright infringement. I could really use it man. Thanks alot
Hi, I check my compression. Front cylinders has 90+PSI and rear cylinder has 60 PSI. I pour 1 tea spoon of oil into the rear cylinder it went up to 120+ PSI. Do you think i will need to overhaul my engine or a new engine? thanks. Is there any fix without splitting the crankcase?
What skills do i need to rebuild an engine like this V4 one? I have done : fork oil seal and oil replacement, clean and sync the carbs. How many hours did you spend working on it?
I have 2 1985 V65's. The better one has a bad 2nd gear problem. I can't find anyone that wants to work on it. I'm an electrician by trade and hve done basic vehicle repairs. Other than starters and alternators I haven't done any motorwork. Would I be better off not trying to rebuild it myself? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Nice video. Where did you get all of the rebuild parts? what happened to your engine that caused it to need a rebuild? is there a proper manual for this build? price of parts? did you use the same rods and bolts? thanks!
Yes, very difficult. It is almost impossible to find crank and rod bearings. I think I got the last new ones in existence. Ebay is full of some decent used parts too.
How would i know if any other parts required replacement? I have download a repair manual from V4 forum. Thank you. Can i just get replace the rings? What else should i look for once crankcase is split? thank u
Hi, nice rebuild ;) How's she running now? What paint did you use on the valve covers? They look quite nice. Mine are ugly and I'm not feeling like polishing them...
I think a good way to get into rebuilding would be to by an engine off ebay and rebuild it. If you screw something up you haven't hurt your bike's engine and will have learned what not to do. If you get it right then just do an engine swap and sell your old engine on ebay.
hi. i just boutght 84 v65 honda its not runing, what kind gas it run, regular or super, gas now is so expensive, what if i put in regular ,is it still run ok, need your anser, thanks
How much to rebuild a 84 v65 magna .mine has 41000 miles on it.I would like to rebuild it back new someday.I don't know hot ot do it myself.I can do somethings but not that.
@fieroman88 Any time you open up a case expect to spend at least $500. I didn't know how to do it either but I figured it out and have done it three times now.
Good stuff. You do this repair work for other people? I'd toss you some coin to rebuild my Maggie. She is starting to show her age... Thanks for the video.
Cool. Looks like I lucked out this round - only have a clutch issue that I can work on. May need a rebuild in the future and I'll talk with you about that perhaps. Meantime I'll keep viewing your videos here. Thanks a group brother.
+lilevil 1955 I do frame-offs. Rebuild everything on the bike. It will be better than new when I am done. First one I ever did was ready for the scrap heap, when I was done it won first place in a show.

beautiful bike. I had an 85 v65.. loved that bike, that engine would scared the crap out of me

any of you guys still around? where can I get the hard parts for the motor?
I got most of them on Ebay. I used all different rods, pistons, crank and bearings. I put a single line oil mod on it and it ate up the bearings. I should have listened to Dave Dodge. I now have a proper drill and tap.
So are you saying the 1st gen oil mod is actually making the top head problem worse?

IF THEY MADE THESE NEW TODAY, THERE'S NO QUESTION WHAT I'D GET.
They are shaft driven
That is what I though too. But these motors are very simple. The only way to get experience is to do it.
I have a question does the 1988 Super Magna heads fit on the block of a 1985 V45 ?
You can get starter rebuild kits for about 30 bucks.
All depends on the condition of the bike.
Nice work !
Mr. Vision, please show me where to buy rings for those V4 engine? I heard it is hard to find those parts since Honda stop making them long time ago.

how much is a starter. and is the v65 worth putting money into. the motor turns by hand.

Yes, very difficult. It is almost impossible to find crank and rod bearings. I think I got the last new ones in existence. Ebay is full of some decent used parts too.
Beautiful job. I'm just wondering about parts availability for a near 30 year old Honda. Was this difficult?
well done sir
know where to get the rebuild parts for the motor V45 750, 1982, had mine since 1986! drove it daily for almost 20 years!
They are out there, E bay is a good place.
I always do. It roughs up the walls so the new rings will wear into it.
i have the sabre v65 did you change the clutch plates and if so did you use the oem or the kevlar ones?
I put a Barnett in it but I didn't like it. I ended up using a KG kit and have been very pleased with it;
"yeah she runs a little rough but its never given me any issues" xD
Is it possible to get replacement camshafts for a V65 magna? I have one and need to have the heads rebuilt.
thank you.
Rip💪🏾

Hi, nice rebuild ;) How's she running now?
What paint did you use on the valve covers? They look quite nice. Mine are ugly and I'm not feeling like polishing them...
It's powdercoat. I went back to polished aluminum, it looks so much classier
I have a vf750s but i believe it's the same engine. I have oil coming from the flywheel, what do you think it is?
Normal, the motor uses oil to cool the stator. There's an inlet and outlet towards the bottom of the flywheel
MagnaVision2010 thank you! I didn’t know that. I would have been buying a different engine because I thought I had to rebuild it.
It's a common concern
MagnaVision2010 and it wasn’t running either so I thought maybe that was the problem. Thanks!
How much is it to rebuild a v65 motor.I have a 84 with 41000 mile that i would like to get rebuilt back new.I don't know how to do it myself.
I would love to be able to do that ....
Do i need to hone the cylinder wall before installing rings?
How much does a job like this cost

Sounds like it is time for rings. Case split required.
how do i put the gear next to starter back on,inside casing
If anyone needs some parts. I have a 84 v65 sabre engine that i'm turning into a coffee table.
+Mr. Dee.Z . Nutz Still have stuff?? I'm taking apart my '84 this weekend and wouldn't mind having spares when I break something...
