    As an FYI those ratings printed on the biner are not "opening strength" and "closing strength". The 24kN rating for that biner refers to the maximum allowed force limit along the long axis of the biner when the gate is closed. The 8kN rating refers to the force limit if the gate is open. BTW, 24kN translates into ~5,400 lbf. That's 5,400 lbs of weight at earth's surface altitude. Just imagine 25 - 30 buff guys hanging off of that biner, and that's roughly what we're talking about. If that was referring to "opening strength" you definitely aren't going to be opening that gate with just your thumb, that's for sure.
