Better plot twist: the piano tuner is Mattias from the future, sent back in time through a piano he made that opens a portal through spacetime. If the piano tuner does not keep Mattias's pianos out of trouble (just enough out of tune for no one else to notice), the next piano he makes will uncouple the electrical from the magnetic field, and space will unwind itself. I like mine better. :)

In japan, the technictians that tune and repair those big drums write their names and dates inside it and you can see all repairs datings centuries ago and it is very cool
I grow fonder and fonder of this piano technician every time he’s featured in the videos if I lived in that area and played piano I would hire him just due to the fact he’s featured in your videos and seems lovely

He gets free advertisement for himself and can prove that he can also tune modified pianos so of course it is good idea to come visit to these videos as often as possible. :)

I think the piano tech was onto something when he suggested that you put something on the tip of the hammer. You should make a quick change system that allows you to put all kinds of material on there. Rubber, iron, brass, hardwood, softwood whatever...

I love how the tech came in like "Oh god, all of these perfectly good pianos are going to get ruined by this guy." But, I do like how he seemed impressed with this one lol
i think he liked the creativity of replacing piano hammers with actual hammers. But he was def still critical about the piano - esp after playing some of the dodgy keys he grimaces and says "it's something" - which sounds like he was being polite (while dying slightly inside xD)
The piano actually sounds amazing. And I've said it before but I think that even though you're doing a lot of these things "as a joke" your work is really impressive.
6:23 I agree with technician guy, it would be really cool to have access to this hammer piano as a sforzando library or another virtual sampled instruments. Maybe you could get Versilian Studios to sample it or turn it into a library :D
@@Mattiaskrantz I think you could also get an engineer to come up with a few methods to decrease the strain on the keys and maybe increase the speed. This one sounds genuinely good especially after the tuning. Plus you could make another video with the classical pianist playing it as a before and after comparison.
I'm always just impressed how well Swedish people can just switch to English, I don't think I've ever met one who doesn't speak superb English. Makes me want to learn another language.
@@Zerbey Most of us are close to 50-50 between the languages. To be honest it's mostly age that is a factor here as english has nestled into our language education. The interesting thing is I use english as often as swedish with most of my swedish friends. You should definitely learn a second language!

Pianos were invented from a maker intending to make a Harpsicord more reactive. It would be interesting if you could engineer a guitar pick hammer that gives the sound of a Harpsicord maybe? Its definitely an engineering solution because you have to slide the pick so it doesn't hit the strings on the return....like a Harpsicord. I love the videos!

By the time you get to the end of this piano rabbit hole, you're gonna be a certified piano tech yourself. The amount of time you're putting in is nuts.
I was going to say this. You can also insert a felt "curtain" in between the hammers and strings with metal studs, that way you don't permanently damage the piano.
@@chriswilson1853 Indeed, the "thumb tack honky tonk" trick was something we'd do to an old upright piano on it's last legs. There were a LOT of those back in my day.
Regarding perfect pitch, I've heard that perfect pitch is actually an impediment to being a piano technician; your absolute pitch recognition drifts over your lifetime, and perfect pitch makes it much more difficult to nail down relative intervals (especially using objective measures like frequency beats), which is the important thing in tuning.
@@catt0215 yeah like I have quasi-perfect pitch (where I can recognize a few notes absolutely and use intervals to get the rest of the way there) and even then I've found that my absolute basis pitches have drifted over the years which is really annoying, and I can't imagine what it's like for someone who perceives ALL pitches that way.
One thing I'd love to point out is that the technician when playing the piano is indeed playing it like a harpsichord (play to the keys, harpsichord has hand close to keys whereas piano is away from the keys). Just reinforcing the technicians earlier statement of how it felt like a harpsichord
I had to watch this video after seeing the one with the professionals and I'm so happy my harpsichord comparison wasn't misguided. This was so fun! Very good video! An interesting idea would be to have have an electronic vibration in each hammer. Make the hammer object vibrate at point of contact.

I read the title as "I put HAMSTERS in a piano" and was so worried for these hamsters the moment he started playing it.
Try pressing down the middle pedal (if there is one) so the path the hammers take is shorter and might be easier to play.

Regarding perfect pitch, I've heard that perfect pitch is actually an impediment to being a piano technician; your absolute pitch recognition drifts over your lifetime, and perfect pitch makes it much more difficult to nail down relative intervals (especially using objective measures like frequency beats), which is the important thing in tuning.
The relative intervals thing makes so much sense
As someone with perfect pitch, I can confirm this lmao
@@catt0215 yeah like I have quasi-perfect pitch (where I can recognize a few notes absolutely and use intervals to get the rest of the way there) and even then I've found that my absolute basis pitches have drifted over the years which is really annoying, and I can't imagine what it's like for someone who perceives ALL pitches that way.

One thing I'd love to point out is that the technician when playing the piano is indeed playing it like a harpsichord (play to the keys, harpsichord has hand close to keys whereas piano is away from the keys). Just reinforcing the technicians earlier statement of how it felt like a harpsichord
I had to watch this video after seeing the one with the professionals and I'm so happy my harpsichord comparison wasn't misguided. This was so fun! I do feel bad that you cut off a few of his answers. Now I have to go find the guitar string and fishing wire videos! Also, thank you for having the professional integrity to not advertise a video you didn't believe in.

Hey Mattias, you should put guitar or bass pickups on a piano. Then you can play piano through effect pedals. Piano with chorus would sound so good
