Have you ever been trout fishing and saw people fly fishing all around you picking up fish left and right but nothing seems to be going after your rooster tail? Well, I've experienced this multiple times and got me interested in trying to figure out if I could fish flies effectively with a spinning rod & reel setup. This video will run through the setups you can use with spinning gear and some tips on how to fish flies on your spinning gear. Finally, we put it all together and show it's possible to be very effective fishing flies on spinning gear (I still hear it's a lot more fun on a fly rod - so definitely on my list of things to learn). We have all the gear you need to get started fly-spin fishing below! Reach out with any questions!
Casting Bubbles: amzn.to/2Lb9zKB & amzn.to/2xHrgya
These are a must if trying to fish dry flies. They are extremely light weight so you can't cast them effectively without some weight and these add the weight you'll need. Additionally, they are very buoyant and will keep you fly floating on top of the water. Giving you the ability to fish nymphs, caddis and other dry flies.
Fly Starter Kit: amzn.to/2YM1gNd & amzn.to/2WDsov1
At this cheap price point there is no reason not to buy this assortment pack! It provides you with a variety of flies and boy do these flies catch em. In this video I was mainly using the black woolly bugger! Booyah
Woolly Buggers: amzn.to/2zfi9oS
The bug, the myth, the legend. This thing slayed em, no doubt about it and this variety pack gives you the option to try out a couple different colors to see which ones you like and more importantly the trout!
If you just wanna go with all black here is a 12-pack. - amzn.to/2Lb3sWK
However, I would recommend having a couple different colors because you never know which one they will like!
Trout Inline Spinner Kits: amzn.to/2L7zF0X & amzn.to/2A8kQJn & amzn.to/3dquxkO
If you are new to using inline spinners I'd recommend getting a kit with a variety of them. Panther Martin has a great variety pack!
Trout Rod: amzn.to/3dnUz8c
I use the 5 foot berkley cherrywood ultra light rod. The sensitivity on the rod is amazing, which makes it great to feel the trout. I also use this rod for catching panfish. The light action makes the fight fun!
Trout Reel: amzn.to/35HdkAE
The 1000FE is a great choice. It is not too big, but still holds a good amount of line. I have used my shimano reel for 10 years and have not had any problems with it. It still is smooth as butter!
Trout Combo: amzn.to/2xI1dXL
Here is an option for you combo lovers out there, pick the light 5'6"! I use a pflueger trion reel for trout, crappier, and bass fishing and it works great. The rod appears to have great sensitivity, but still have enough backbone to set the hook.
Other Trout Rods & Reels: amzn.to/2zkHkGs amzn.to/3cpdzDn
Trout Strike Indicators: amzn.to/2YIELJd &amzn.to/3c8k6C5
When float fishing for trout you need to get some strike indicators in order to be as effective as possible! These lightweight floats will ensure you see even the smallest of bites!
Flourocarbon Fishing Line: amzn.to/2WDsG55
When trout fishing you need to have flourocarbon line - as it's almost invisible to the trout's eyes (they have very good visibility and if they notice fishing line they may be hesitant to bite). I usually run a 4lb flouro leader!
Marabou Jig: amzn.to/2L6usX5
Get your variety pack of Marabou jigs today, so you can hook up on your PB! The thing I love about these lures is that they are cheap for how effective they are!
Split Shots: amzn.to/3dqp25v
You guessed it, another variety pack. It is really important to have a range of split shots you can put on your line. This allows you to test and see which weight works best for each of your reels, jig, and line type. Not to mention the ability to target different depths of water.
Trout Magnet: amzn.to/2xHoMjk & amzn.to/3frtyCB
Trout magnets are one of the most popular lures to use under a float for trout....and rightfully so; they get the job done! I'd recommend getting a couple different colors to match the conditions you are fishing!

Thanks for watching guys! Have you ever tried using flies on spinning gear? Did you have success? Always looking for more tips - but I'll definitely be doing this more often. Such a fun time!
I used to do that when I was a boy before you were even born. I caught trout but when I was old enough to buy a fly rod and reel I discovered fly fishing with spin casting equipment sucked.
I need to buy a fly rod and learn!
@@StopFishingStartCatching I have bought myself a 9wt fly outfit. I've got a lot to learn as far as casting & everything else is concerned, but bringing in even small trout & reds is way better than with any spinning rod. I plan to get some casting lessons in when possible, so it can only get better from here.
That stream looks really healthy. Thanks for sharing.
This is awesome, thank you so much for sharing! I too am using spinning gear until I get my hands on some decent fly gear.
Sadly a lot of fisherman chirp a beginner like me, I love to fish and right now spin gear is the only equipment I have at the moment.
I wish more people would be encouraging and help others with what they have.
Looking forward to more videos like these! 👍
Heck yea brotha...I hate when people rag on people for no reason! I'll fish with ya with spinning gear on any day - but glad you found the video helpful - fishing with flies on spinning gear can definitely be done! Hope you and your family are all doing well!
Works like a charm out here in the creeks of western NC. Thanks for sharing
Works a treat for the brown trout here in southwales uk ;) keep safe over the pond
Oh cool I have never tried fishing it in "stillwater" I need to give that a shot - thanks for the recommendation man we appreciate it! Have a good day and stay safe as well!
What a terrific concept, will give this a go in the coming weeks. Cheers!
It works well man! It's fun getting to use a whole new class of lures that you may not have been able to before! Have a good day brotha!
So cool your video. I just heard about this and googled the topic and can't wait to try it!
Yea buddy! It's a cool way to use flies on spinning gear! Hope it works out well for ya! Thanks for watching!
I've been fly fishing with spinning gear and catching a lot of trout ,but instead of floats and split shot I been using 6-10foot tapered polyleaders. The floating ones are designed to attach to the end of standard fly lines to make delicate dry fly presentations. The longer ones weigh about 3 grams and with a light setup can cast 20-30 feet . You need a rod with larger sized rings for the loop to go through the tip though .
Ahhhhhhhh very cool I need to give that a try! Thanks for the tip buddy - we appreciate it! Have a good one!
Did you just tie the polyleader to a braid or fluorocarbon line that you already had on your spinning reel? what was the setup?
@@zerggod4190 I just tied the polyleader to line I already had on reel , I started with braid but got quite a few wind knots so now using mono. If your spinning rod has a small tip ring you will need to cut off the loop off polyleader, strip a couple of inches to bare mono .Tie a stop knot in it and then tie your mainline around mono core with a Uniknot . if your tip ring is really tiny (UL) then you will need to melt end of mono into a small blob with lighter and carefully pull uni knot tight if you heat the end of mono core for too long it will turn brown and break off the end before your knot fails so wise to always test strength of connection before fishing . Tight lines .
@@StopFishingStartCatching Let me know how you get on
@@johnbrock7528 Thanks this sounds really cool I haven't got the money to buy a fly fish setup so Ill try this out next time. Do you know any websites that have other cool techniques like this one?
Have been trout fishing local winter stocked ponds and had success with mice tails...until now. They just stopped biting and are feeding off insects. Will try this method this weekend. Thanks for the great video!
Glad it helped you out brotha! And yea after a while of being in the "wild" stocked trout will slowly adapt and act more like wild trout - so they get finnicky and stop biting powerbait and stuff. Those bubble/water floats work really well and help ya cast way out there. Good luck!
Oh and joe fly and other inline spinners/rooster tails work really well too!
What a lurvly video there pal ! You went super light to catch a monster , I believe in all that . The water looks cool and runs super clear .The narrative and music is great . I have subscribed and I throughout enjoyed the video . Well done .
Thanks for the compliments man; appreciate it! Just watched some of ur vids - u are catching monsters! Excited to see some more! Hope you have a good one!
@@StopFishingStartCatching Yes it's all about going out and loads of fresh air . C'ant stop !
Gotta love them faux trout! I only just started fly fishing on spinning gear. Like....just this past week, lol! Was fishing a special regulations stocked stream, and wasn’t having any luck with spinners. Couple other anglers were rather successful fly fishing tho. Only had one chance to try it out, caught 2 chubs.
It's a blast brotha! Yea I'm with you I usually roll with spinners in creeks/rivers but decided to switch it up that way! Have a good day my man!
Amazing content ! Love the outdoors! Let’s grow together!
Can't beat spending time outdoors!
Cheers mate really helped 👍
Awesome glad it helped out brotha! Let me know if we can help out in any other way!
Thank you for sharing this important info👍👍
Beautiful fishing spot and trouts 🐟

Hahahahah - thanks for watching buddy! Have a good one!
HeIIo Iike 21 Bro very good 😉😍👍👳♂️
Thanks for checking out the video my man!
Do you have to use clear water bobbers, or does any streamlined float work?
Almost like euro nyphing on a fly rod, long leader to some shot with a few droppers to nymphs. The fly line is a 0# so casts like shite but doesn’t hang and drag your flies so if your in a fly only area then effectively the same
Oh cool...never heard of that! I'll have to check it out! Do you have any videos on that method of fishing? Always looking to learn more!
Did you take the floater off
For the streamer ? And popped it up from the bottom or where you popping with the floater?
Hey brother - good question! In this video I took the float off so it was kind of like popping a jig off the bottom. However, you can pop it with the float on - this is good if it's been sitting out there for a while and you want to give it a little life like action - but yes usually when I'm "jigging/popping" it I take the float off and it works great!
@@StopFishingStartCatching thank you for the tips brother 👍
I have done it with a bombarda float.
Oh cool! I was looking into those - they looked like they'd be perfect. Did it work out well? Hope you are doing well brotha!
I bought the floating bombarda’s. They were 20g. They worked well & cast well too.
Can you fly fish with a spin cast (push button reel )
Hey Daniel! Yea man for sure, just set it up the way you would with a spinning reel and should work out perfectly! Let me know if you have any questions!
OK thanks and I know I'm late to the video but I'm getting into trout fishing and looked up some videos about fly fishing with a normal rod and reel and this came up thank though.
I'm here after Instagram post of yours 👌😊
Thanks for checking out the full video! Hope you enjoyed it! Have a good one!
@@StopFishingStartCatching thank to you too for these videos 👍👍
Here is one doing it but you’ll notice the lob casts, basically pooling the line and the lobbing it up stream and 45.
Not instructional but similar method.
That’s video one. Video two is a bit of a mix but using close range euro nymph

Is called Spinfly and was invented in Italy. And is not like that lol
This is blasphemy
Hahahaha - i'll get a fly rod eventually!
@@StopFishingStartCatching Do it! It multiplies the fun!
Get off your purist high horse. Fishing is a personal endeavor, and there is no right or wrong way to do it as long as it’s done ethically.
@@TheADDFiles-yk4dc bro it was a joke. I could give a rats ass how this guy fishes. Maybe you should get off your high horse and take the stick out of your butt while your at it.
tmortensen1000 unlike you, I don’t put things in my butt.
Nice video but that sound is cancer
Hahahaha thanks for the feedback...we'll have to invest in a mic. Thanks for watching and have a good one now!
Another useless video.
boring
hahaha damn...it's hard to make informational content interesting - I'll make a better one 👍
