    #6. That's not sharpening, that's honing. Sharpening is grinding metal away to create a sharp edge, and you need a craftsman to do that. Honing is straightening the edge when it gets pushed out of alighment by cutting hard stuff, and you can do that yourself, as demonstrated.
    However, I'm sure your mum told you that you never *ever* move knives towards you, always away from you. As 2;20 the tip of the knife ifs inches away from your wrist and the major artery. If you slip, you have minutes to get a tourniquet before you bleed to death. if you do it the other way around the knife get's just as "sharp" and you don't risk killing yourself.

    Watching it in 2020 as single woman soon going double trying to build a relation with cooking and just being in kitchen. Love your vids Jamie.
    A request, can you make a video series about meal planning, pantry planning, planned shopping, creating shopping list & inventory lists for the pantry and meal budgeting for a singles, couple and families.
    Will be a huge help. I just cant seem to crack it all and make sense of it. Would really appreciate your videos on that.

    love these simple tips to make life easier in the kitchen. It was Jamie that showed me an easy way to slice hasselback potatoes using 2 wooden spoons lol. I'll throw in a simple tip as well. Down throw away hard bits of cheese or rinds. Stick them in the freezer then if you make a soup or stew, pop one in to add extra savouryness. ☺

  • @erikceman5354

    Steel doesn't actually sharpen a knife, it only aligns the very edge so the knife cuts better, if you want to sharpen a knife you have to use wet stones or a tool with a spinning wheel and a buffing compound !

    #6 is honing the knife, not sharpening. You're realigning the edge of the blade, not removing steel. It definitely keeps your knife sharper longer, but eventually the edge will dull and you'll have to sharpen the blade with a stone or grinder. I recommend honing every time you use the knife and sharpening once or twice a year.

    The way to never get egg shell in your egg is by not cracking it on the side of the bowl, but rather on a flat surface like the countertop. It's something to do with how the shell cracks that way that means that it's really hard for any bits to fall off. And if you're quick and good enough at it you won't leave a drop of egg white on the side.

    The entire Avocado & Mango thing that's is a Latino move Jamie lol! Seriously!! But you know the wishbone potato peeler will also pill the Mango-right!
    I also take the sides of the mango & put like a # slit on the meat & eat it directly from the skin.. when cut into pieces try to sprinkle some Mexican Tajín, Pico de Gallo powder & squeeze lime over it...if accompanied by watermelon, coconut, papaya & pineapple-quite delish!
    LOVE you style of cooking from the very beginning Jamie.

    • @Iam1uglyguy
      @Iam1uglyguy 7 лет назад

      What he did isn't sharpening a knife, it is honing a knife, basically it is straightening out the edge. There are LOTS of videos about sharpening kits, look around and see what makes sense to you. I wouldn't take advice from him on what to use to sharpen, most Chefs send their knives out to be truly sharpened. They use to steel to hone or help keep them sharp.

    • @Iam1uglyguy
      @Iam1uglyguy 7 лет назад +1

      I wouldn't ask him. What he did is honing, NOT sharpening. Also while technically he did it correctly, he didn't do it safely (although to one who handles knifes as much as he does it is still pretty safe) he should know the difference.

    • @Iam1uglyguy
      @Iam1uglyguy 7 лет назад

    #6 - that's not sharpening the knife, that's honing it. It just trues up the edge.
    in use over time, the edge doesn't stay aligned, Honing re-aligns the edge.
    If you try to sharpen a knife that was always dull (a butter knife for example), it's not going to do squat. You "sharpen it, by grinding and polishing it.

    • @Iam1uglyguy
      @Iam1uglyguy 7 лет назад

      YES! Thank you. If this guy is a chef he should know that and explain why it is NOT sharpening but why it is a valuable thing to do!

    • @mtktm
      @mtktm 7 лет назад +2

      He probably just said it like that for the layman. I just said what it actually does. In reality, without getting too technical, a knife isn't worth resharpening, unless it costed over a hundred dollars IMO.
      To be technical, tempered low carbon or high carbon steel (depending on use) are the only knives worth getting. For the average person, they will think they are junk because of them rusting, but that just comes down to them not maintaining and storing them properly
