Just saw 2 consecutive comments, one saying her voice is too 'broadway' for the role and one saying she's not 'broadway' enough. Seems like she's one of a kind!
I saw her as Jenna a couple weeks back, and she was so amazing! I cried from “Dear Baby” all the way to the end, and her voice was just so powerful. So glad this video is up so I can relive that night.
Tom B she is so lovely in the show! i ventured out and saw her in it in june from the front row and she was stellar! it was nice though that for this concert i didn't have to travel very far to see her again! hope you enjoyed the video!
I feel like Betsy is more of a classical singer than a "no vibrato" sort of singing. She doesn't have a Broadway voice (if you know what I mean). If you listen to her in the 2013 off-broadway Last Five Years you can see that. I personally like Jessie singing this song
I love her so much, and her acting is top-notch, but I think her voice is too "musical theatre" for the role; it doesn't translate as well to the pop-theatre style of the show. I love her so much, but its not the casting choice I would've made.
RoseInMisery7 while i see where you're coming from, it's completely different in context with the show! it translates differently in a concert setting and then in a show where she's gone through this huge emotional journey! trust me, she's absolutely stunning as jenna, i saw her from front row in june and she had me a mess !!!
Conor Clancy i don't believe it was slowed down at all, but with it being a standalone performance without the previous context of the show it may feel slow! also with the full orchestrations it might feel more layered... glad you enjoyed though!
I agree but at the same time I LOVE Betsy playing Jenna! she is so great and definitely gives the character justice!!! I couldn't think of anyone better to play this character currently!!
I really dislike Betsy Wolfe as Jenna. She botches the character completely. Stephanie Torns should've taken over when Sara left!! Betsy's voice is not suited for this role and her acting leaves MUCH to be desired.
Disagree. Mueller was way overwrought, too "old-broadway-dramatic," and what is up with that lisp? I do not get the attraction to her. Yes she was a caricature of Carole King, but thats about it. Betsy brings in the conflict of what its like to be stuck in that kind of a relationship, and makes it believable in her acting and singing. You must have missed those subtleties...
I have been involved in musical theater since I was 8. I definitely looked at Betsy with a critical lens and did NOT see any of those nuances. Jessie on the other hand did the role justice. I have no clue what "lisp" you are referencing. At the end of the day, Jessie Mueller IS the reason Waitress is a hit, in my opinion. She set a strong precedent that mousey little Betsy could never live up to. I am disappointed with her performance in this particular role and look forward to the day that she leaves to Carousel so we can get a fresh, new Jenna (hopefully Stephanie Torns because she deserves a turn!!).
Sara could NOT act very well. She is not a trained Broadway actress. I long for the day that Betsy leaves and finds a role better suited for her voice and persona, and we get a Jenna that can do this poetic role justice.

Conor Clancy it did feel to me like her and the orchestra were at slightly different tempos, or like she is always backphrasing
Conor Clancy This looks like it was a special performance...sometimes artists will change song arrangements for a concert style. :)
You've got some disjoint b/c of the vantage point where it was recorded from, with mains being apart from the live voice/music.

Oh, and Waitress is a hit solely on the strength of the amazing songs that Sara Bareilles created. Her turn in the lead was even better than Mueller.
