I just so happen to be working on a fantasy work where these are a cornerstone weapon in ship-to-ship combat. There's even a one-armed gunner who favors the breechloading thunder-mug variety.
I'm also working on a fantasy story where blackpowder weapons are prevalent. There's not enough love for powder in fantasy fiction, even though most of them are set in societies similar to the late medieval and early modern period.
swivels could be moved, though I imagine they were kept fixed incase stuff like this happened, just unloaded and with tompions(wooden plugs) in their muzzles to keep humidity out, possibly covered with a tarp
@@GoldandGunpowderI love your channel so much and I've spread your teachings of the true life of a pirate with my peers and teachers much appreciated much love 👌
The breech blocks could also be used as thunder mugs (pirate era flares).. At the top of the cliff where the Dutch VOC ship Zuytdorp was wrecked several breech blocks were found along with broken bottles and evidence of a truly huge bonfire; in the ashes of which were the metal bindings of chests and barrels. This indicates that a massive signal fire was lit; the breech blocks perhaps fired off, in response to a sail on the horizon. One who never came to their aid.. . . . That was 1712; in Shark Bay, Western Australia
One good trick is if you favor a certain gun more than any just make it large enough it would harm you trying to use it then just put it on a swivel so you can use it. It was pretty much better than a cannon.
Make lots of shorts! Your vids are perfect for it tge way you write and edit them it should be easy to just snip up your vids and make several shorts from each vid. It really gets views and increases interaction, I don’t watch them much but others do , it could really help and no one will get mad or think it’s bad that you did it
New York state( USA )expressly forbids use of swivel guns for hunting. What you are talking about for anti-personnel use is called canister shot. A bag or later ,an actual metal canister (much like our food cans today) full of lead balls and or metal " bits" as you mentioned. Swivel guns are also called "wall guns ". Because they were used on fortress walls
preindustrial breechloaders suffer from gas leakage due to improper metallurgy(the pieces fit poorly together, so gas can escape through small gaps) which reduces their accuracy and power. in the 16th century, breechloading was the norm for most artillery at sea, partly because proper casting techniques had not been invented until the late 1500s. though breechloaded cannons were replaced pretty quickly in the late 16th and early 17th, this replacement didn't occur for swivel guns until the 18th century, likely because they worked well enough
there are like 10 different terms and sometimes some of the terms refer exclusively to breech-loaded or muzzle-loaded variants and other times they dont, i'll cover it more in the full length swivel video coming out in a year
I almost think that you might know more about this stuff than I do and I've watched a lot of pirate movie so I know a lot... One might go as far as saying I am an expert because I have washed several pirate movies! (...even ones that were made before Johnny Depp!)
YEAAA SWIVEL GUN EP
Thank you so much I’ve been wanting to figure out what this does

Makes surprise an even bigger imperative. If the merchant doesn't know your coming he can't drag his swivels out of the hold

Douglas Fairbanks captured a entire crew with two BIG swivel guns

Did breech loading swivels fall out of fashion? Why , was it replaced by muzzle loading in the end?

Hey, my mom says that pirates were not very smart. I think otherwise
always listen to your mom
@@GoldandGunpowder yes sir
The Spanish and the Portuguese also used these guns as their defensive weapon too.
What about loading with forks and knives?
could you please do a yt shorts on the nock gun?
it was never used by pirates but I could cover the organ which was similar, might do one on the puckle gun since it was used within the timeframe
Did some ships have rams on the front and if so did pirates ever use them
ship rams were abandoned after Roman times, they had a quick renaissance in the 1800s, but were never used in the Middle Ages or Age of Sail
How many period terms for swivels exist? Patteroes and others terms appear often. 🤔

The films aren't factual most of the time. There are plenty non fiction books on the subject.
I always watch til the end, no regrets, strongest alpha/sigma vibe on RUclips! Hustle baby! Lol
