50 years later, still the most beautiful song ever crafted, arranged, recorded and sung. John Lennon once said the most beautiful song he had ever heard.
It's definitely one of the best songs. I've been wanting to cover it for 20 years. I finially posted my version the other day. Go listen at my channel and leave a comment.
I listen to it over and over. Still feel it's the greatest even after all these years. You are the greatest Gary Brooker and you are so sadly missed, kind man. I know you are in heaven playing this as you are so proud of it, as you should be.
I literally ran from covering this song for 20 years because the vocals were so challenging... I finally posted my version the other day in memory of Gary Brooker. See if you like it.
I wish I would have appreciated the All Starr band back in my 20’s in the early 90’s when Ringo started this tour. He had such legends playing with him.
It honestly might be, and I say that as someone that's not a Procul Harum superfan or anything like that. It's one of the most beautiful, melancholy, most perfectly arranged and performed songs I have ever heard. It may be the most evocative song I've ever heard. I honestly don't know if there's a song I could say that is better. Sorry for the stream of consciousness writing.. you comment got me thinking... and I would struggle to form a coherent disagreement with your statement. It genuinely may be the greatest song ever composed in modern music.
1968. I'm a roadie for a local Pennsylvania band and we're playing at a local dance hall called Tipper's A Go Go. We play the first half of the night and Procol Harum along with Keith Reid and being handled by the road manager from the Paul Butterfield Blues Band played the second half. They were touring and promoting the release of their newest album, Shine On Brightly. It was mostly, as us long hairs called them in those days, a greaser and dance crowd. 75% of them left when Procol Harum started. We had our own private concert standing directly in front of the stage. After it I sat with Robin Trower on the edge of the stage and he showed me his old wooden tube radio that he got from a pawn shop and used as a pre-amp to get his sound. Then we all hung out and talked about who else's music we all loved. They said they were trying to find a copy of, my other favorite group, Moby Grape's second album that was just released. One of our guy's had picked up a copy earlier that day and they bought it from us. To this day, that is probably one of the top memories of my youth and even today at 74 years old.
Gary was given a MBE but how he never made it to Knight is beyond me...wrote a song that is perhaps the best of that entire decade..every time it's played, i stop to listen....unbelievable
WOOOOOOOW!Amazing, great famous song, legendary, splendid great voice & good face brilliant music man!GOD BLESS & LONG LIVE GARY!Touched my💖!Thanks for nicely video!💚💗💙💗🌞💜🎹🎙🎶🎸🎸🥁💖🌞💗💛💙👌👍✌
Still sends chills down my spine and brings moisture to the eyes after so many years. Gary was like a mountain - someone I assumed would always be there as a part of the landscape.
I saw Gary play this with Ringo and the Allstars…and it was one of those performances that I will never forget. Absolutely Superb! Godspeed Mr. Brooker…
Gary Brooker ci ha lasciato, lasciando un vuoto ed uno sgomento incredibile, ma la sua musica sarà sempre tra di noi e A WHITER SHADE OF PALE, ci accompagnerà ancora per molte e molte generazioni!! R.I.P.
Absolutely: No Question: the 1997 edition of Ringo's All Starrs was the finest group he had ever lashed together. Top-notch talent all the way, Peter Frampton, Jack Bruce, Gary Brooker, Simon Kirke, and Ringo's right hand man, Mark Rivera on sax - and here playing M. Fisher's organ part note-for-note. I am grateful that a boot of this band FINALLY became available in '05 or '06. Like Ringo himself says, just before the posting clips off, "How'd ya like to follow THAT every night?"
I am 83 years old and remember the first day I heard this and I literally went nuts. I played this over and over , and never got tired of it
I'm only 75, but I'm with you , brother.
I'm only 72, and just learned that Mr. Brooker has passed on. I'll be making a YT video of this song in his honor, very soon.
only 69 but with you bros
I'm 71 and just re fell in love.
Rip G ary
His voice hadn’t changed in the slightest. And now, it never will. RIP Gary.
He was one of a kind. Procol Harum was unique in their heydey and had a long career playing their classic blues rock.
So true about his voice, it was the same his whole career! Miraculous
@@richardstarr4828Basically one hit wonders (1½ if you count Conquistador), but an immortal hit it was.
RIP Mr. Brooker. Your song is one of the best ever. Ever.
I just posted a tribute version in honor of Gary. Go check it out at my channel. Feel free to leave a comment.
Gary never acts like he's tired of singing this.
At one point they wouldn't play it anymore. Check the version I just posted as a tribute.
RIP Gary. So many great versions of this classic song.
I just posted a brand new version in honor of Gary. Go check it out at my channel and leave a comment.

Never gets old..... RIP Gary Brooker a once in a lifetime voice.
50 years later, still the most beautiful song ever crafted, arranged, recorded and sung.
John Lennon once said the most beautiful song he had ever heard.
John Lennon ever said "I could not write such a beautiful ( & metaphoric) lyric like "...one of 16 vestal virgins"
Paul McCartney said the most beautiful song he ever heard was God only knows by The Beach Boys
I said that too
It's definitely one of the best songs. I've been wanting to cover it for 20 years. I finially posted my version the other day. Go listen at my channel and leave a comment.
This song puts me in a place that I can't describe in words but it's a magical place.
Yes indeed. I understand completely.
See if you like my version...
Infinite gratitude to the Master JS Bach for inspiring this classic and a plethora of other rock & pop songs!
Thank you Mr Brooker, thank you Procol Harum for the best song ever 👏👏😎❗️
I listen to it over and over. Still feel it's the greatest even after all these years. You are the greatest Gary Brooker and you are so sadly missed, kind man. I know you are in heaven playing this as you are so proud of it, as you should be.
...You say it....
I listen to a bunch of PH songs early in the morning when it's still dark (working time) outside. Gary's voice sounds just magical.
I never get tired of listening to this beautiful melody. I am so sorry for the death of GARY Brooker
What a beautiful singing voice Gary had. RIP.
RIP, Mr. Brooker. One of the great all-time tunes. And thank you Bach, for being timeless.
I just posted a tribute to Gary on my channel. See if you like it.
Gary Brooker (Procol Harum) had this breakout hit in the summer of love 1967 right before The Beatles' Sgt. Peppers came out In June 67.
This is one of the few songs that last the testament of time, it will never age
His soul is singing,RIP Gary Brooker, great song ever composed
Man Gary bookers voice is one of the best !!!!!!
I think Gary Brooks voice has always been amazing , but it's as great as ever as he ages. Maybe even better.
Brooker’s voice sounded so mature when he was young and incredible even today.
His voice gets better every year!
I literally ran from covering this song for 20 years because the vocals were so challenging... I finally posted my version the other day in memory of Gary Brooker. See if you like it.
Sure is
I wish I would have appreciated the All Starr band back in my 20’s in the early 90’s when Ringo started this tour. He had such legends playing with him.
One of the best songs from the 60's...
Doesn't get much better than this - still love it 50 years on!
See if you like my cover version.
The melancholy masterpiece- probably the greatest 20th century song. Perfectly sums up that century. Smack dab in the middle of the Vietnam War.
The lyrics by Keith Reid are so obscure and haunting... Check out the version I just posted at my channel.
Amazing, this song was popular in 1967,I was 19 years old,he sounds the same, amazing!
MY ALL TIME FAVOURITE SONG. HAVE IT ON 7 INCH
The first time I heard this song I was 9 years old. It overtook me. It still does. Amazing piece of music. RIP Brooker.
Yo tengo 67, y está melodia me recuerda,a toda mi familia en mi niñez,me da nostalgia cada vez que la escucho,,,GRACIAS GARY BROOQUER.
Without doubt the greatest song ever composed.

Talented musicians. Thank you, Ringo for assembling these souls
Although my eyes were open they might have just as well been closed. What a line
Why do I always tear up when I hear this song?
It's a healthy reaction, it is very moving.
It is a moving song, i too get something in my eyes when i hear it...
Same as me here..🤧🤧🤧
Actually read the lyrics , it’s not a sad song , it’s about feeling sick at a party because you’ve had too many drinks or drugs
that hammond organ is haunting......so superbly done.great tune
Mark Rivera, who plays it here and who Gary Brooker introduces, is the saxophone player in Billy Joel's band.
Beautiful
I saw this tour. Everyone was great! RIP Gary Brooker!

This song is a good as any of the best of The Beatles. And that’s quite something for me to say.
The beatles agreed
I have read that John Lennon said that he wished he had written this song.

Without a doubt, a slow dance was warranted during high school dances and proms in 1967.
