I never minded the Who's being flawed in this version, as I thought it was an interesting twist on the story. Both the Grinch and Whos needed to learn a lesson, and only when both of them came to their respective realizations would the cycle of hatred come to an end.
The Grinch has one of my favourite Ultra-Quick jokes. Where he's being relentlessly fed desserts as people encourage him, and then suddenly there's an Einstein-esque Scientist who spoons some green goo into his mouth whilst saying "Zis is NOT pudding", and Carrey just manages to hurriedly say "WHAT IS IT?!" in a voice of genuine panic, before being silenced with more puddings.

I actually got to see him in The Grinch musical and he was fantastic! Definitely could see that performance was heavily based on Jim Carrey's interpretation.
Though that does only highlight how bizarre it is to have real humans playing the incredibly flexible and cartoonish Seuss designs. I would have gone with, at least, puppets. but it really should have been 2D. Still use Jim Carrey, still record his facial expressions in the booth and draw them..

Interestingly there is a extended cut of this movie but like most movies they put those scenes for tv & trailers & bonus features deleted scenes. There's even a YT channel dedicated to finding these scenes.
This was the second movie I saw in a movie theater, 4 years old and I can say that the marketing was everywhere! I still have some of the merchandise shown in this video. It was crazy how much they marketed this thing.
I watched Sonic 3 last night, and it was probably because it’s almost Christmas or because we got twice the Jim Carrey, but the performance of two robotniks gave me massive Grinch vibes
There aren't a ton of movies I have like this because not everything is for everybody; however, this _is_ one of those movies where if someone says that they don't like it then I get very suspicious of them. To me that is one of those "yeah, I don't think we can really get along" flags. Maybe it is just that they lack whimsy or just have a very different sense of humor. Either way it is probably a sign we aren't the pair to hang out much...
I have never met a person in real life who said they disliked this movie. My speculation is that its because we are British and we did not grow up with the 70s cartoons (generally speaking). Since they are more of an American cultural thing, it makes sense for Americans to be more split over this movie. I suppose we would be the same if, say, The Snowman got a major motion pitcure whereas I dont think Americans would care all that much
They ran a paint scheme for the Grinch at Atlanta in 2001 and Jimmy Spencer was the driver. They also used they same paint scheme for a reveal for when Joe Nemechek was announced for the driver of the #26 in '02
I will say in defense of giving the Grinch a backstory, is that the whole 'Please don't ask why, no one knows the reason' is a blatant lie, as the original story does show why the Grinch hated Christmas: The Whos were unintentionally obnoxious about it and were really loud. And obviously for a live action film they couldn't just leave it at 'The Grinch hates noise pollution'. Inconsistency was something Dr. Suess was quite consistent about, amusingly enough, like in the special Grinch Night, a prequel to the original Grinch, the Grinch is shown to have magic powers and size-changing abilities which he obviously didn't have in the original. Speaking of Grinch Night, I think it's fair to say the writers of the 2000 film took some inspiration from that, with the Whos living in fear of the Grinch.
I was not a fan of this movie as a kid but my younger sister loves it. To me the 30 minute cartoon is the perfect version. However if one good thing came out of the movie it was the game on PS1. Super underrated gem for the console and very fun.
Your experience with the poster was the same one I had but with Cat in the Hat a few years later. I loved the Grinch and Mike Myers so the poster excited me so much. I was also obsessed with the behind the scenes features on the Grinch DVD (which had a ton including games) when it released and played the Grinch PS1 game endlessly even though I couldn’t get past the second level. Love the rhyming in this video.
I’m sorry, I can’t help it: I love this movie. Jim Carry is a fantastic choice for the grinch, Rick Baker’s makeup is fantastic. I especially love the sets and size of the extra. After spending almost a decade of watching movies with CGI overload in both sets and extra, I love it when movies have real sets, large casts, mostly practical effects and all that it intails.
I was a big toy kid (still am, really), but surprisingly I don’t think I have any Grinch merch. Maybe a McDonald’s toy somewhere? I remember the Grinch being big in Australia when it came out, but clearly America was where it was turbo-charged.
Alot of actors deserve an Oscar just for their preparation alone for these roles. Other examples include… Joaquin Phoenix as Joker, he literally almost died because he lost so much weight
Just saw this at the theater today! Wife's first time seeing it, she loved it! I saw it when it released and countless Christmas's afterwards on VHS 📼!
I wish to make a note of the fact that this and the "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" movie are both adaptations of books, where the movies have not received the best reception, however because said books are not that known in my home-country of Poland (and neither are their earlier and more fondly remembered adaptations), when you mention anything about the Grinch or a Chocolate Factory, it will be those 2000s movies that people think of. As often as I told my parents about the legacy of these stories, they keep forgetting, because my words are the only proof of it to them!
Thanks for the memories. I watching your video remind of all the stuff 9 year old me saw that year. One of my favorite holiday event start as a promotional tie in to the movie with Grinchmas at islands of adventure. The first year of the event they had a big Mont Crumpit slide. Still happens every years with a show that retells the story and has music by Mannheim Steamroller.
The live-action Grinch movie is a guilty pleasure of mine, I watch the movie every Christmas season since the early 2000s. The thing is that I was in my first year of elementary school when the movie originally came out, but I never went to the movies when I was a kid, so I grew up with its repeated showings in TV. I'm also from Latin America and Dr. Seuss' books aren't well known here, but I did watch the Chuck Jones Grinch cartoon and even the Cat in the Hat one in Cartoon Network's Cartoon Theatre in the late '90s, so even back then I thought the live-action adaptations weren't as good, but the Grinch does actually have some redeeming qualities, like special effects, make-up and Carrey's performance I also have to add that I grew up with the Neutral Spanish dub, which has reached huge meme status here in the region, especially Jim Carrey being dubbed by his usual dub VA, Mario Castañeda, is kind of funny knowing that Jim Carrey sounds exactly like Goku from Dragon Ball Z
Weird Fact: There was a Teaser Trailer for an unproduced live action adaptation of 'Where the Wild Things Are' set for a 2001/2002 release from Universal attached to screenings of The Grinch, but it was scrapped and a new version directed by Spike Jonze was made in 2009 by WB. The whereabouts of this Trailer are currently unknown and is considered Lost Media (allegedly, the trailer is just pitch black and just has noises coming from the Wild Things themselves, so IDK if we're missing much anyways)
Fake. I saw a Mr. Coat trailer disproving it. Movies don't get teaser trailers until they're later in production than what that movie was in at the time
Its actually amazing to see how the movie did a complete 180. I remember liking it when it came out but it seem to garner a lot of hate from people. Now at this point the hate is only in very small corners and it has become a Christmas classic people watch every year. I personally wasn't bothered by the Grinch origin and to be fair while the books and animated short says no one knew why he hated Christmas you could guess from some of the stuff he said. Like he flat out hated the noise so you could assume hes just a grumpy person who hates noise and Christmas is rather loud.
The first time I saw this movie was the Grinch was sucking on the glass and something about that shot scared the shit out of me. God I love this movie.
Its interesting to see you do a video on this, when Carrey this year has stated that he would love to reprise the role... so long as he doesn't have to do the entire make up since Hollywood effects have come a long way.
I love this movie mainly bc it doesnt try to ever be something it isnt, it knows very well what it is. Its a silly kids movie based off a dr seuss short story, and imo the settings and everything encapsulate that dr seuss feel so perfectly.
Im grateful for the backstory sequence if for no other reason than Josh Ryan Evans' performance. I had no idea the Baby Grinch was Timmy from "Passions," my Mom's favorite soap opera that I liked too. I also didn't know that Evans was 18 at the time. Under all that makeup, it was impossible to tell. Plus...when he worked so hard to impress Martha only to get rejected and mocked by the entire Who class, I felt his heartbreak. He was just that convincing. Can't even imagine what emotional depths he plumed to make his acting so convincing. Especially since he wouldn't be around much longer himself. If it were any other actor, the backstory could easily be written off as unnecessary. But I give it a pass because Josh went above and beyond in thr biggest performance he'd ever give.
Playing The Grinch on Dreamcast has become a yearly Christmas tradition for me. This movie will always be Top 3 for me, and they can remake it ten more times. Jim Carreys performance won't be topped, even if he isn't as iconic sounding as Boris.
1:12 I still have one of the Wendys Christmas Ornaments they gave out when this movie premiered and always wanted the remote controlled Grinch Gettaway Car....never got it.
Its so weird in my memory this movie came out later, like 2002 or 2003. Im really surprised it was in 2000, my memory has definitely jumbled up the timeline more than i realize. I know 2000 and 2002 is not a big difference, but because i was a kid, and because of what was happening in my life, those two years feel a lot further apart than they are. Anyway just a strange moment for me.
Probably 8 hours the first day to get everything right 4 hours on a normal day where nobody is in a hurry 3 hours when they are and 2 and a half when they're late

Like you said at the end, people who saw it when it first came out “like” it because they only care about the “experience” from hype/marketing at the time than the actual quality of the movie, itself.
Fun fact: Here in Germany, the movie was also a hit (bc of Carrey and the Christmas theming), but there was no merchandise - bc the Dr Seuss books are completely irrelevant here and nobody knows or loves them.
It’s like Jim Carrey’s superpower is turning films such as The Grinch and Batman Forever into not necessarily good films but ones that are at least watchable
Nothing tops the little car having the huge explosion scene!!!! The scene was so random and hilariously pointless that it makes it memorable. It spoofs over the top action movies. Jim Carey as the Grinch running from the explosion lives rent free in my head.

Still one of my absolute favorite Christmas movies. I watch it every year
I watched Sonic 3 last night, and it was probably because it’s almost Christmas or because we got twice the Jim Carrey, but the performance of two robotniks gave me massive Grinch vibes
Yesss I loved that game ❤
Was never a huge fan of this movie, but I hear you on the hype for it pre-release. Gotta respect the talent that went into it
I was just getting ready to watch that movie. Perfect timing, lol
I actually own that talking Grinch doll and it's my prized possession.
It's one of those movies that I love everything about it EXCEPT actually watching it again hahaha.
Any Grinch that lacks Boris Karloff ain't a real Grinch.
I don’t hate this movie but the commercialization of the holiday really sets a bad mood in my heart
7:00 Oddly I never thought The Flintstones movie was ever a Hit or even a hit with Fans at all too.
NGL, I still haven't seen the live action version. You can't perfect perfection.
It’s incredible. I watch it every year. Don’t compare it to the 60s cartoon. It did its own thing.
I was a big toy kid (still am, really), but surprisingly I don’t think I have any Grinch merch. Maybe a McDonald’s toy somewhere?
I remember the Grinch being big in Australia when it came out, but clearly America was where it was turbo-charged.
I think Carrey could have won an Oscar for this role and nobody would have complained. I don't love this film, but it has grown on me over the years.
Alot of actors deserve an Oscar just for their preparation alone for these roles. Other examples include… Joaquin Phoenix as Joker, he literally almost died because he lost so much weight
The Grinch had the biggest Universal marketing campaign for a holiday movie until Wicked arrive!
The post office promo made since. Lou is the post master.
This is a great back story to the movie. Thanks for the video.
Thank you for making this!
Just saw this at the theater today! Wife's first time seeing it, she loved it! I saw it when it released and countless Christmas's afterwards on VHS 📼!
John Chu is directing an animated version of “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!”
I still have the ornament I got at Wendy’s when I was 4
I always thought that Jim Carrey's Grinch was too wacky and jolly.
I was scared of the TV spots and trailers and promotional advertisements as a kid.
Seuss' books aren't well known here, but I did watch the Chuck Jones Grinch cartoon and even the Cat in the Hat one in Cartoon Network's Cartoon Theatre in the late '90s, so even back then I thought the live-action adaptations weren't as good, but the Grinch does actually have some redeeming qualities, like special effects, make-up and Carrey's performance
I also have to add that I grew up with the Neutral Spanish dub, which has reached huge meme status here in the region, especially Jim Carrey being dubbed by his usual dub VA, Mario Castañeda, is kind of funny knowing that Jim Carrey sounds exactly like Goku from Dragon Ball Z
Movies don't get teaser trailers until they're later in production than what that movie was in at the time
Without Jim Carrey, this film is pretty much DOA, he's a spark like in the Sonic films that keeps you glued.
This film will always be a nostalgic guilty pleasure of mine.
Bro just out here spitting bars like Dr. Seuss
I remember having the ugly Christmas sweater action figure at 1:33 remember having Grinch and Batman fight to see who rules over the land as a kid
I love this movie mainly bc it doesnt try to ever be something it isnt, it knows very well what it is. Its a silly kids movie based off a dr seuss short story, and imo the settings and everything encapsulate that dr seuss feel so perfectly.
I have vague memories seeing this movie a long time ago. Always love the behind the scenes stuff that went into these films.
I will not listen to a single critic of this movie thank you very much. I was 8 when this came out and saw it in theatres
needed this
EXCELLENT research!
I love the Jim Carrey Grinch movie. Thanks for doing a documentary on it.
Seeing Jim Carrey in the recent Sonic 3 movie, made me want to revisit some of his 90s and early 00s comedies like this. :)
If I had a nickel for every Grinch review in rhyme I’ve seen on RUclips I’d have two nickels (as far as I know I just know Doug Walker did this and I loved it.)
I wouldn’t say it was a review but the cinema sin video was also done in ryhme
One of my favorite childhood toy was the electric Grinch car, and a Grinch doll that changed faces. I still have the doll and use it as a decoration every year.
This is one of those movies I knew was bad even as a kid. It’s definitely not the worst I’ve seen. It’s watchable, but I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. Like you said at the end, people who saw it when it first came out “like” it because they only care about the “experience” from hype/marketing at the time than the actual quality of the movie, itself.
I personally love this movie unabashedly. All the things that some people hate it for are the things that I love.
I absolutely loved the backstory!
Fun fact: Here in Germany, the movie was also a hit (bc of Carrey and the Christmas theming), but there was no merchandise - bc the Dr Seuss books are completely irrelevant here and nobody knows or loves them.
Let's be honest, the weirdness of the grinch being commercialized has NOTHING on the lorax being over commercialized
