Opening Up My New to Me Shredder - John Deere 709 Rotary Cutter

So I am pretty sure it's a 70s model based on the parts diagrams at John Deere's website. It seems to match up with 709 models with serial number 041000 and below. I am probably going to pick me up some new blades, but other than that it seems to be great.

Ok, so I guess they do NOT still make the 709. My bad. This one seems to be a 70s model, but it's built like a tank. I think this might outlive me. What do you think?

Yeah, I think I got this for a great price. Everything seems to work correctly and the shredder is big and strong. I am going to get me some new blades and then just use it forever.

Nice. I would say that was a great deal. A 7' cutter like that new today is probably $3000-$4000 for a cheap one. A John Deere one would probably be $6000.

Yeah, I think it was a good fair deal for how old it is. Luckily, it seems to be in good working condition. I'm glad I got it.

What did you use for gearbox oil?

Just some old 80w-90 gear lube. It's what I had. But I think in the future I am going to start buying 85w-140. I am hearing the thicker the better on these shredder gearboxes.
