      Aloha and Thank You Nancy. Good to see you! It really is a fun thing to do, and once you're down you still have most of the day. Every time I've been up there, it's been different. Sometimes, you're standing in clouds. We were a bit "lucky" it was so clear and I always enjoy the drive down. I've also done the bike ride down from about 6,500 feet or so, and that is pretty cool also. Stay safe and salty and sane and Keep The Faith. Best Aloha Blessings!

    • @MauiTravelVideos
      @MauiTravelVideos  4 года назад +2

      Aloha and Thanks Toney. I think if I were to ask around, most would agree the Sunrise is better than the Sunset. I think it's because you can see some spectacular sunsets at different places around the island. Actaully, I have probably 1,000 high quality sunset pictures and videos, but going from total darkness to glimmers of light at 10,000 feet is truly an awesome experience. Still not sure about the Thirsty Turtle. Now, the food service suppliers have about half of the products I need. No one has hot dog buns. They've given away their food stock to Food Banks, Homeless Shelters, etc. They tell me it will take 45 days for me to get the inventory I need. Plus, retail stores and food places are going away quickly. Yesterday, Ono Gelato (next to me on Front Street) vacated their lease and place. Also, my FAV CJ's Deli & Diner at the Fairway Shops Kaanapali vacated their spot. Lahaina Coolers (another FAV) is not re-opening. And there are many rumors of TS Restaurants no re-opening their many restaurants. Crazy Times. Please stay safe and healthy and think of celebrations on Maui when this clears-up sometime in the future. Perhaps, not this year. Who Knows? Take Care and please stay in touch.

      Aloha and Thanks. Yea, same here. Years ago I did the bike ride down and it was so very good. Stopped at a place and had a nice picnic lunch, etc. Now, not as much fun due to many restrictions and only certain operators can do it and the stop/start/begin places are different. Not the same, but still pretty good from what I hear. Yep -- I am the "Aloha Ambassador" or as Patricia calls me: " Maui's Eating & Drinking Expert" Hey -- it's an honor I hold dear to my heart. Aloha and thank you, Janet. Yes, it's pretty neat up there and very very cold. I was horribly prepared, as I am a truly stupid. Been up there many times and I left quickly without taking a single thing. I barely survived by the mercy of some others who saw me and felt so very sorry that I was stupid and wore beach shorts and a polo shirt. We stopped for breakfast at The Kula Lodge, but it was closed. All the other small places for drinks and snacks were also closed. Hope you come back to Maui soon. Aloha and Thank You Jo Anne. I'm glad you've done it many times. As you well know, you don't know what to expect until you get up there. I've gone several times and just stood in the clouds with zero visibility. No Fun! It was clear this time. I want to do a video in the future that is a sunrise, then a sunset, and then stay for the full moon to go over. A Three-Fer !!! 3 Events. I'm looking at a calendar and trying to figure out how to plan it. I thought about driving down to the Kula Lodge for lunch and then go back up mid-day, but the Kula Lodge is closed. Darn. So a bit of planning, or just stay up there for the whole day. I'll figure it out. Hope you can return to Maui in the future. I'd plan for next year. Personally, I think this year is gone. But we shall see! Many Aloha Wishes and Blessings to you and your FAM.

      Steve, like you, I am not thinking 2020 is going to see a big influx of tourists returning to HI. Such a shame. We have tickets to return in Feb., but I'm definitely prepared to fold those plans if covid continues its grip on the world. I definitely like your idea of a three-fer! It reminds me of those who live or visit FL taking in the sunrise on the Atlantic side then driving across the peninsula to watch the sunset on the Gulf side. The idea of adding full moon view is genius. I think I will add that to my own Haleakala plans! Mahalo for the idea! Stay well and please continue to make your lovely videos.

    Hello again guys, as always, what a terrific video full of wonderful views and useful information. We've never been up there, maybe because we've never been able to get up that early while in Maui. Anyway, we have held up rescheduling our trip as Ige may delay the Aug 1st reopening. What in the world is going on???? I continue to hear of permanent restaurant closures. The Monterrey Canning Restaurant in Oahu is gone! What a shame. I'm sure you know of many who are on that path as well but we're hoping this all comes to an end soon. Again, mahalo nui loa to you both and please continue bringing us those much treasured videos......its all we've got for now. Liz and Lou

      Aloha and Thanks Liz & Lou. So good to see you again. Yea, this was a fun video and trip to do and I hope you do it when you get back to Maui. It may be a while! LOL. I do thing the GOV is going to push back the August 1st date to at least Sept or October. So far on Front Street, there's been about 8 retail places remove themselves and are now vacant. Also, Ruth Chris Steak House, Lahaina Coolers (our FAV), and Ono Gelato are not re-opening. Another FAV of mine -- CJ's Deli & Diner at the Fairway Shops is not re-opening. Even Bev Gannon is thinking of not opening her 4 upscale restaurants. Several in Kihei have announced they will not re-open, so it continues to go on-and-on. I have not heard much about Oahu, except the 4 Irish Pubs are not re-opening. Much more to come, I am afraid to say. I hear TS Restaurants may permanently close all their Maui restaurants, and if they do .... if will truly be an Epic Event, as their restaurants are all big and popular and employ a lot of people. OK. Please stay safe and salty and somewhat sane. Wishing you both the very best. 'Till next time.

      @MauiTravelVideos  2 года назад

      Aloha Eli. Many thanks for watching and writing. Ka'anapali Resort area is awesome and there is a ton of things to do. Send me an email and I'll send you a bunch of brochures and maps and such that is all free. Some years ago, Maui County decided to limit the number of bike operators coming down Haleakala, so they put out bids for 2-3 tour companies. While that eliminated a lot of companies doing tours, they selected (I hope) the best. So, I think they are all about the same and all do a good job. Check Tripadvisor for reviews. You will probably get picked-up about 2:30am to begin the easy journey to the departure spot for the tour. Downhill Maui. Bike Maui. Not sure if either is still around. You'll get good info on the Internet. www.bikemaui.com Send an email to: Maui Travel Videos (at) G Mail (dot) c o m. Travel Safe. See you soon on Maui, Eli.

    • @MauiTravelVideos
      @MauiTravelVideos  2 года назад

      Aloha and thanks for watching. Not sure of your question, but you can go to the top of Haleakala without any hiking. It's an easy drive straight up and there is parking at the top. You can plan a hike down into the crater, and then take the "switch-back" to get back to the parking lot. I believe that is still available, but do check with the National Park website. Many things have been "altered" over the last two years. Best Aloha Wishes for 2022.

    • @MauiTravelVideos

      ALOHA ALAMP1020. Wowszie, and thanks for watching and commenting. It's an easy drive and it totally depends on how many stops you make along the way. On the way up, you won't stop much so it can take just over 2 hours, depending on your rate of speed. On the way down from the summit, you will want to pull-over and take pictures and, maybe, stop at Kula Lodge for a light early lunch or some snacks at the general store. Just depends. The key is not to hurry. Take your time. Enjoy the moment. Oh -- and make sure you have plenty of clothing. Best AlohaWishes.

    • @MauiTravelVideos
      @MauiTravelVideos  3 года назад

      Aloha Courtneys. Thanks for watching and commenting. Not sure exactly of a place to eat in the Kula area. Kula Lodge comes to mind. Check them out. Maybe somewhere in Makawao, too. Best to get on the Road To Hana early and eat along the way. Go slow and enjoy the whole day. Yes, you'll be back for dinner time in Wailuku. Not sure of where you are thinking about in Wailuku, but Saigon Cafe is good. Kahului is the area closest to the airport. Not great restaurants around that area. Enjoy Maui and have a fun time. Best Aloha Wishes.

    Loved this video, we are going for our belated honeymoon in October 2022 and staying in Kiehi. What time do you suggest leaving our condo to make sure we get a parking spot at the summit for sunrise? We will of course get reservations for sunrise. Thank you!!

    • @MauiTravelVideos
      @MauiTravelVideos  3 года назад +1

      Aloha Meganleafy. Many thanks for watching and leaving a comment. Leave about 2am or no later than 2:30am from Kihei. Better to be there early than late. Take LOTS of warm clothing. Don't bring warm clothing, as you just won't need it for the island. Take your bedspread and any blankets from your place that you are staying. Take towels. Take everything!! And of course, make a reservation. Go to 5 Palms in Kihei for breakfast, lunch and Happy Hour. I have videos of 5 Palms. I'll be making a video this week of the "Southwest Maui Tour" from La Perouse through Kihei. Watch for it. Stay safe and travel smart. Best Aloha Wishes for 2022.

    • @MauiTravelVideos
      @MauiTravelVideos  3 года назад +1

      ALOHA NK. Thanks for watching and commenting. You must go up there, but don't do what I did. I've lived here almost 20 years and done tours up there, and then I go up with friends and almost got really sick I was so cold. Horribly cold. Wind was blowing and I look like an idiot wearing a t shirt and shorts. Take the bedspread. Take blankets from your residence. Wear what you wear normally on Maui and pack the trunk with every bit of heavy clothing you can find. Don't buy anything. It's really hot here at sea level. Now ..... it's summer, so it should be a bit warmer up there. But I'd still suggest you taking some clothing and blankets just in case. You Never Know. Travel Smart. Be Safe. Hi I love your video thanks for sharing !! We going to be there and a few days and we really want to go to the park but I’m trying to look to the reservation but I couldn’t found it ;( can you please help me with the information or link ,I would really appreciate it ☺️

      ALOHA . Just google "haleakala reservation" and you should easily find it. You'll complete the short form and pay a small amount. You'll take the form with you, I believe. It's easy and there are several ways to get to the reservation site. Took me few seconds to find this: www.nps.gov/hale/planyourvisit/permitsandreservations.htm Best Aloha Wishes.

    I'm so glad I came across this video. Do you recommend doing this on your own? There are tours for this sunrise hike but very pricey. What do they have that we won't be able to do if we did it on our own?

    • @MauiTravelVideos
      @MauiTravelVideos  3 года назад

      Aloha Bianca S. Many thanks for watching and leaving a comment. Either way is good, but I prefer to do it myself so I can take my time and stop when I want and stay up there as long as I want. Some of the so-called "attractions" on the tour may still be closed. Make sure you make an on-line appointment for the morning you are going. You MUST do this before leaving to go up there. Or you can take a tour and just sit back and enjoy the trip. Either way it is something you must do. Let me know if you have any questions. Come and enjoy Maui and Best Aloha Wishes.

    Did you drive all the way north of the island or through the middle? How long is the drive? Are there places to stop to use the restroom?

    • @MauiTravelVideos
      @MauiTravelVideos  3 года назад +1

      Aloha and thanks for watching. About a mile north of the Kahalui Airport, you start heading up the mountain. It can be about 2 hours, depending on how often you stop for pictures. Because of Covid, there are not a lot of places to stop for drinks, etc. but there is one or two. If you are going up for sunrise, they will not be open. On the way down, they might be open depending on the time you come down. There are certainly restroom facilities at the top. Take plenty of clothing. Enjoy The Journey. Best Aloha Wishes.

    What to do if you can't get a reservation??

    • @MauiTravelVideos
      @MauiTravelVideos  2 года назад

      Aloha & Mahalo James. Gee, I am not sure. If you were wanting to drive up to the top in your own vehicle, and can't get a reservation, I guess the "only alternative"would be to book a Tour Operator that might have an opening for the date you want. They will pick you up at your resort/hotel/condo and take you up in a mini-van or other type vehicle. That is all I can think of, James. So sorry. Wish I had a better answer. Best Aloha Wishes for 2022.

    do you know if it's cold up there in the middle of august ? :)

    • @MauiTravelVideos
      @MauiTravelVideos  3 года назад

      ALOHA WITTLE. Thanks for watching and commenting. I'd plan on it being cold. Don''t be like me and not go up there with a blanket or extra clothing. It doesn't hurt to throw some stuff in the trunk. It all depends -- on many factors. If it's overcast or the wind is blowing, it can make a big difference. Even in December when it's freezing up there and often snow, it's the same warm/hot weather at sea level. So plan some and you'll be fine. Enjoy Maui . Stop by Lahaina Lobster Roll on Front Street if you get a chance. Travel Smart.

    I've seen several videos on the sunrise. Most people leave at around 3am. What time is sunrise roughly speaking?

    • @MauiTravelVideos
      @MauiTravelVideos  3 года назад +1

      ALOHA BRIAN. Thanks for watching and commenting. Yes, 3am at the latest. We always leave a bit earlier. Sunrise is around 5:30am or so. Difficult to say. The fun is being up there in the TOTAL dark and watching the first sliver of sunlight. TAKE WARM CLOTHES. Take your bedspread from your place. Load up the trunk. Make sure to get a RESERVATION. Each morning, many get up early and make the drive, only to be turned away at the Ranger Station because they did not make a reservation. I love those stories. Got some more videos up, so check out some of our beaches. Stop by Lahaina Lobster Roll in Lahaina Town and say "aloha". www.lahainalobsterroll.com Best Aloha Wishes.

    • @MauiTravelVideos

      Aloha Karina. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. Yes, you can most certainly take a rental car to the top of Haleakala. Make sure you make a reservation for sunrise. Google it. Only a certain amount of cars can go up each morning. You can go anywhere on Maui in a rental car. Leave nothing inside the car, ever, when you park. Stay safe. Come to Maui soon. Best Aloha Wishes.
